Japanese, Chinese and Korean folklore also have a Wild Hunt - 百鬼夜行 (pronounced ‘hyakki yagyo’, ‘ bai gui ye xing’ and ‘baeggwiyahaeng’ respectively). This phrase is identical in appearance with Japanese kanji and Korean hanja with the Chinese script. It literally means ‘hundred demons wandering in the night’, and was a procession of demons and monsters wandering through the towns, killing everything they can find. Now the phrase also means ‘veritable pandemonium’ or ‘scandalous scene’.

The boot of gold and Christmastime connection reminds me of an old story about St. Nicholas. Apparently, back when he was a bishop instead of a jolly fat man living at the north pole, he saved a tradesmen's daughter from hardship by anonymously throwing a bag of gold through her window. The bag landed in a freshly-washed stocking that had been drying over the fire, which is why we hang stockings on the fireplace at Christmas.

    • @artcase8936

In some versions, Herla and similar beings (like Herne the Hunter) have antlers, similar to Cernunnos, who is also believed to be an influence. Yet, these folkloric figures as we know them today only really started popping up after the Christianization of Britain, long after the Norse and Germanic invasions/migrations (which also occurred in France). So to rule out Odin from being an influence is a bit hasty. The most likely answer is that Odin, Cernunnos, along with other mythological beings and possibly some historical individuals all played a part in the shaping of Harlequin and other folkloric individuals of similar nature.

FRAU HOLLE'S STORY IS THE TALKING EGGS! Ok so The Talking Eggs is basically a Southern-Black Cinderella. A girl named Blanche lives with her sister, Rose, and her mother. Rose and the mother love to sit around and make Blanche do all the work, and one day in the middle of summer Blanche is sent to the well for some water. Blanche gets the water and gives it to an old woman. When Blanche gets home, the water is all warm and her mother and sister throw her out. The old woman invites Blanche back to her home and tells her not to laugh at anything she sees. Blanche sees crazy shit like axes fighting in midair, a two-headed cow with corkscrew horns, and technicolor chickens; some chickens have more than two feet, others have just one. SO. The woman gives Blanche chores to do and Blanche does them. She grinds up a single grain of rice and they wind up with a bunch of food, things like that. The woman also takes off her head to comb her hair. That evening, they watch a bunch of rabbits come out and dance. The next morning Blanche is sent to the coop to gather eggs, with instructions to only gather the plain ones, and to leave the gold/silver/jeweled eggs. On her way home she's to throw the eggs over her shoulder. When she does she gets a carriage, nice clothes, and money. When Rose goes to the woman's house, she mocks the woman, laughs at what she sees, plays keepaway with the woman's head, and takes the fancy eggs. When she tosses them over her shoulder, wolves, vermin, and bees come out of the eggs. Blanche takes her new fortune to the city and lives happily ever after.

Same like "Perchten"(plural), which are people dressed in full wooden masks, quite heavy usually, wearing full fur suits, having 2-4 giant cowbells tied around their waist to scare away evil spirits aswell. The twelve days of Christmas are called "Raunächte" here :) The main difference is that the first group is usually made up of young people, feel more like a procession, and it originated as far as I know from our Slavic neighbors. And the other one is a bit more wild like s hunt. The culture is quite intertwined with our neighbors here in Austria.

I'm German, and I wasn't expecting to hear any familiar stories in this video, but when Frau Holle showed up i went "!!!! :D I KNOW HER!!" It was a nice surprise! The fairytale with the girl that I'm familiar with is a slightly different version where rather than having gold come out of her mouth, she just gets showered in gold right before she leaves the magic realm, and the sister gets showered in pitch (as in the black resin polymer stuff). The pitch doesn't wash off, so the sister is just doomed to be covered in what's basically wet tar for the rest of her life. fun

For anyone curious or just thinking it, I just want to add something about the horses. Red mentioned "...the leader of the hunt typically rides a white horse, but Odin's horse is specifically grey."
In horse terms, this is the same colour. 'White' horses are not born white, they are often born black or chestnut or bay, and will 'go grey' overtime until they can be a snowy white. To most people who aren't around horses, they'd call this a white horse, but it would actually be called a grey horse in correct lingo, especially if translating from another language. This could mean that it is Odin leading these hunts on his 'grey' horse.
There are exceptions to this grey rule, such as extremely diluted cremellos or champagnes, or a few rare cases of paints with no colour, but even then, in horse terms they wouldn't be called a white horse either.
