In MSFS you are better off not assigning the throttle at all, helicopters generally have governors that control the throttle automatically. In fact assigning collective and throttle to the same axis in a helicopter that does have a throttle would be a terrible experience (the only one I can think of in Xbox world without a governor is the latest local legend but that also has a cheat mode to engage a governor that doesn’t exist in real life). There are some times that you wouldn’t want a 1:1 relationship between collective and throttle. In fact if you look in the flight manual for most helicopters in MSFS (for example the excellent cowan R66) it says if you don’t have a separate axis for throttle do not assign any axis to throttle. Apart from that, good video

Once again you have explained the complex with accurate terminology and a sense of hope that anyone can learn to fly helicopters. You are a lovely person and I really mean that. I thought “well their’s a stick… and pedals how hard can it be? And then you realize, in a clockwork orange kind of way that’s hard to explain, that almost everything you learn with fixed wing doesn’t work here. It’s witchcraft! My wife laughed so hard and even the cat had his paws over his eyes. Then someone said “hey, you wanna watch Blue Thunder again haha.” The level of concentration with rotorcraft is intense… and yes the look on your face is the same one you’ll have when taking a crap. But you will get better! And the sense of accomplishment when you do get good is worth it. The collective in MSFS is too sensitive and takes a while to master. The window between too much and not enough collective is a razors edge in the sim and it doesn’t matter which helicopter you’re flying. Hopefully they fix that.

Sensitivity settings are key when hovering. What you need to do is to adjust the sensitivity such that the profile is as flat as possible at the hover point (between level when hovering in ground effect and hovering out of GE. This helps to ensure any inputs are very small when they need to be. I also set the reactivity to low levels. This smooths out jerkiness and over-controlling. O prefer using that control rather than dead zone because you want to be as close to the axis as possible. Finally, the TB V1Stick is not the best for helos owing to the very short levers. I use a separate throttle lever for the collective (NOT throttle, as Alan has pointed out). These settings transformed my hovering performance with assistance off (think football pitch to 1ft square!!😂

To control a heli perfectly FFB Cyclic and rudders a must, there is no way around it. Sadly we don't have that on a mass market yet.

fwiw, I have a velocityone flight stick and an xbox S. I just tried a helicopter flight for first time today.
I tried your suggestion of linking both collective axis and throttle to same 'L Axis 1' lever, and it just didn't work all that well. PWR needle was jumping all over the place.
There is a default Helicopter profile for the V1 Flight stick for xbox. I've observed, the PWR percentage needle doesn't change in sympathy with the throttle (L Axis 5) lever (right) setting - the needle jumps violently and seems to return to previous needle setting. ie. ignoring the throttle lever position. If I don't touch the throttle lever and do a flight, the PWR percentage changes in sympathy with collective axis (L Axis 1) lever (left) movement. It's as if it is already 'linked'. ie. there is an 'auto-throttle' operation....
Please note I'm using an xbox, not a PC. It could be a bug, or it is just different for xbox.
