- Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager following another crushing defeat in the European Championship.
For the second consecutive Euros, Southgate's squad fell just short, this time with a 2-1 loss to Spain.
Southgate took charge of the Three Lions for a total of 102 games over eight years, becoming the third longest serving England manager.
The Football Association now faces the task of finding a successor to lead the Three Lions forward.
Kevin O’Sullivan speaks with investigations editor at The Express, Zak Garner-Purkis.

Southgate reflective style was dull, boring and technically limited. He was a yes man virtue signaller who achieved nothing.

We have some of the best players in the world, and some of the most exciting youngsters in the world right now. We all saw how hungry Palmer was, Watkins and so on. It's just that Southgate, like the previous managers, has favouritism issue. Certain players will not be dropped even if they're not fit. Harry Kane is injured; Foden playing on the left. He doesn't have the balls to bring on Gordon or Watkins, Palmer, Toney or read the game and make the necessary changes to win us the game. He's a yes man, and an absolute coward.
Also, previous generations weren't as lucky with their draws. England getting knocked out by prime Brazil comes to mind. Or Germany in 2010. Southgate gets easy pickings and still struggles.
@@denisdiderot6779 I don't think the current crop of players are bad but the 2008-2016 generation was horribly overrated, and that is typically what people think of. The 1996-2006 generation was decent but couldn't win a penalty shootout when they needed to.
Southgate never won anything nor got anywhere before becoming the England manager. He had no experience in managing the top players. Did it surprise anyone that England never won anything despite having possibly the best set of players ever😢
Some day, England football fans are going to have to wake up to the fact that England don't have a God given right to win things
He obviously did a great job off the pitch, breaking down the club cliques within the squad and creating a unified group of players and he deserves recognition for that. We now (well, 4 years ago) need someone with some vision and tactical nous.

Southgate wrecked our three best players,Kane, Foden and Bellingham hardly had a kick of the ball. His tactics were madness.

@@robertburrows6612 you’re absolutely right but Southgate didn’t really help him at all. It looked like Kane didn’t know what to do. That passing sideways and backwards is terrible football. And for some reason they wouldn’t tackle. Spain everytime England got the ball, took it off them. Even when they got the goal back, they started defending again!

Jude, Saka, and Cole are it's 3 best individual players.
But it's a team sport and need the right combination of pieces around them.

He treats his players like he's their social worker, all the hugs and coddling constantly. He should work at a petting zoo. Not enough offensive plays, all defensive. I'm surprised he didn't apologise to Spain for making any goals. Stop being so soft and don't take the knee and embarrass your supporters. England looks so weak and I am sick of that.
Because at international level its just about keeping the players facing in one direction because you have so little time with them.Its not like a club manager when you can build a team and style from the ground up. Spain have been playing in the same way for the past 16 years.

England should never have got as far as they did. They had an easy draw and played badly all the way through. Spain showed that there is no "I" in team but England was a motley collection of " I"s. I can only play in this position; I can only score if the ball is placed right at my foot and there is nothing in front of me; I am not going to pass to him; If I don't get what I want I will pout, posture and wave my arms about etc. They showed none of the drive and determination of teams like Turkey and Georgia who were entertaining to watch. I am not a fan of Gary Lineker but what he called England was spot on. Let us stop making excuses for both manager and players.

I have said this before, I wouldn't care if we lost 10-0 if they gave 200%, but they don't even give 10%. Why? because if they get injured they will be out out of playing league and like the presenter said, it's all ego. We won't win anything as a nation when the players think of themselves.

I don't think he has done a bad job, he got England to two European finals in a row and they didn't play too badly either. They didn't beat Spain, but then did anyone? Germany didn't, France didn't either. Before him, England couldn't beat anyone, let alone Germany (2021) and Holland (2024). Capello and Hodgson's England teams couldn't even beat Algeria, USA, Slovakia, or Iceland.

A 2-1 defeat in a Final is not "crushing" in terms of domination , only in disappointment for those actively involved . Following a Final loss (2021) in a penalty shoot-out , not to mention a World Cup Semi-Final and a Quarter-Final (against a team that made the Final and lost only on penalties). By all means boys put your expertise to the FA and perhaps they'll give you the chance to deliver Success .....
