  • In a time when practically all teams used the same engines, daring design was essential. Even with all the innovation emerging, nothing prepared F1 fans for the P34. The legendary car designed by Derek Gardner for Tyrrell wasn't a big winner, but it had its glories in the hands of Patrick Depailler, Jody Scheckter, and Ronnie Peterson. The four small wheels forming the front axle had a single mission: to improve aerodynamics.
The project inspired two (actually three) others to make their versions of six-wheeled cars: March created the 2-4-0, a car that used extra wheels not at the front, but at the back. After several issues, the project was abandoned until 1982, when Williams made its version: the FW08B addressed the predecessors' problems and had monstrous performance. When the team was about to put the car into competition, the FIA intervened.

    Interesting Clip. Thanks. 👍
Harkening back to the days when innovative design was more obvious to the common man. Made for fascinating and exciting times.

There was also a Ferrari F1 car prototype with eight wheels...

The Williams was easily the best handling car - The extra wheels stopped the back end hanging out in corners and allowed greater mid-corner speeds.
Well, it did on my Scalextric track 😀

Jody never said the Car was “rubbish”, but said it drove like a Saloon Car, and he had to adjust his driving style accordingly!
