One of the things I love about your channel is that you show the mistakes as though they are no big deal. If the fire doesn't start easily, oh well. You show it. If you forget to wash the oil out of your pot, oh well, you enjoy your chocolate coffee with the taste of oil, and you tell us so.
I think this is a critical skill to learn in life. And it seems to be one that few are mastering these days. Many seem to use their minor mistakes to beat themselves down emotionally, telling themselves that they are idiots, or worthless, or that they can't do anything right.
But I think the way you approach it is the right way. We're all humans, and we make many minor mistakes every day. Healthy people just move through their mistakes with grace, neither embarrassed nor ashamed. Just accepting that they are not perfect, and never will be perfect, while also committed to being as good a person as they can in the future.
Thanks for being a good example.

There's a trend in modern society to focus on intellect and level of IQ (and material, technology...), but instead, we should focus on wisdom.

    • @davewolf8869
      @davewolf8869 Před 5 lety +5

I have a Mensa-level IQ but it has brought me nothing but pain. Wisdom, instead, from the pain, has brought me peace. This world is burning, forsake it.

    • @trevor361
      @trevor361 Před 5 lety +11

Dave, it's not the IQ that brings you pain. I'd wager it's the ego that comes with it. Your "This world is burning, forsake it." conclusion is shy of genuine peace or wisdom, and needs a few rounds of re-evaluation. If those with the intelligence to elicit change from the world run for the hills, seeking only peace, soon there will be no more peaceful hills to run to.
There is a greek proverb that says
"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in"
Or in other terms - "A society grows great when those with the knowledge of horror suffer their ego to create peace they cannot see for themselves."
or, crafted from the wisdoms of Dave Boothney and Bruce Lee,
"This world is burning, be water"

Bjorn - I'm glad you tied wisdom to mentorship. I believe this is a large part of the attraction of channels like yours. You share your wisdom and your learning which touches a deep need in younger people. You see this across all cultures in all time periods. Why have we drifted away from this? I don't know. It is easy to point at all the technological distractions, but I don't know. I'm grateful for your inspiration and, taking your lead, I've been looking more to how younger men in my day to day life look to me for advice and mentorship.

Although you are focusing on men's health, everything applies the same to women. This is my second time watching this video. I especially appreciate this one. I've been forced into a sedentary life, something I was not prepared for. I was always outside hiking, training horses, I didn't know how to do sedentary. So I evolved into learning new things for the better part of the day. All kinds of things from history to science reading 8 hours or more a day. This video gives me peace about that. It's alright to gain wisdom. Thank you Bjorn!

I barely remember my Norwegian great-grandfather, Hans Belstad, he died when I was a small boy. Born in Norway (circa 1880) he moved to America as a young man, after serving in the Norwegian Army. One story my mother liked to tell from her teens, while she gave Grandpa a haircut and he told her to wait and find a good man. He did not marry until he was 30 and said your grandmother is a good woman. Grandpa and grandma we're loved by all. Never an ill word spoken of either of them.

As a woman, and proud to be one, I have raised my children almost on my own as their father was away most of the time, and his idea of wisdom was someone putrid to me (wish I would have known before marriage, but he is an ex now). I tried to instill within my children, wisdom and common sense as well as hunger for knowledge. I am proud of them and cannot ask for better, my daughters are very successful on their own. My son, chose to stay with me as I am his mother and father into one. I love him beyond words, but certain things cannot be learned from a woman, a man is needed. Men are so important, they are vital in this life, they are the glue that keeps everything together. The woman gives birth, raises and feeds the children, but the man needs to teach about life outside, the outdoors, the self-surviving skills, and especially, the wisdom of life. These cannot be duplicated by robots, internet or other devises. I send these vlogs to my son so as to keep his hunger alive and with his older friends, he can share and also, get some wisdom from the wise and it teaches me also to be a better woman. Thank you for sharing, you are a gift to us all.

You mentioned challenging yourself. I think that's a great point. Its been an historical observation that adversity is what pushes us to advance. I know when I'm complacent, I stop moving forward, I stop learning. I've fallen into the trap of seeking entertainment through video games and social media, which has caused me to play and work on my guitars less, read less, work on my motorcycle less. All this makes me less happy after the electronics get shut off.
I need to get back learning new things instead of being complacent with what I think I already know.

I have found your videos very useful Bjorn! Useful in not forgetting the spirit within, that most important factor. How easy it is to forget when many energies around us say otherwise. Your messages are very important and good reminders when we get caught up in needless things that in the course of living, have no importance. Sometimes we feel we are in high school again, like someone telling you, "did you hear what they did"? We judge people by those things we do ourselves and don't like. I have found that if you can at least catch yourself doing this it is a step in the right direction of self healing, forgiving and Loving. Then we can forgive and not only Love ourselves but others as well. In Nature, you can see yourself clearly because there is truth and no B.S., it is all real and truthful. Nothing to tell you that you are nothing. Instead it takes you in arms out stretched because you are one of its children, part of a huge entire family. Nature doesn't judge you but take you in, you're home now child, Live! Thank You Bjorn! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Have only recently discovered your channel, Bjorn. Thank you for the effort and planning you invest in order to bring us along on your treks and outings.
The winsome way you have of drawing us in to the time of fellowship and sharing is instructive and inspiring. Walking to a quiet wooded site, gathering some wood and kindling for the fire, settling in to start the fire in one of several traditional bushcraft ways, nurturing the spark with tinder before feeding it more substantial pieces of wood, filling the pot with water, and preparing the cup for chocolate coffee. (adjust the camera angle to avoid the smoke, of course) The scene is brilliantly set and our interest is piqued. We are so ready to receive what you have come to offer.
You easily convince us by your example that we, too, can seek out a place of solitude and quiet introspection. Along the way you often intimate that our efforts to find solitude in our own lives can be richly rewarding, as well.
In one of the first videos I viewed here, you were camping with your son and were musing on the stunning beauty of the full moon as seen through the trees where you two had made your camp. Hours later, at home here, when I ventured outdoors on a crisp, cold January night, the clear starry sky framed by an elegant edging of tree branches captured my attention... only then, as I stared and wandered on, did the luminous gibbous moon appear and took my breath away! Your reflection on what you were experiencing the evening of your overnight in the woods sensitized and prepared my heart to take in with renewed appreciation my own encounter with the awe of nature's wonder just steps from our kitchen door!
With sincere gratitude for what you do, Bjorn.

You kind of touched on this, but just as important as learning through study is learning through reflecting on your own experience. To apply knowledge, you need context. To put it another way, study provides various formulae, while introspection provides the actual numbers needed to make those formulae meaningful.
Too many people know a great deal but fail to apply it and so go on doing stupid things.

I am 60 years old and retired but my health keeps me sedentary, so I play online video games. I play with many younger people, especially those still in school, so late at night I ask them if they have school in the morning. Of course, they do, so I bum them out by telling them to stop playing games and go to bed; because an education is vital to their success in life. Being ignorant and stupid will only lead a person into failure! Video games are fun, but don't let them destroy your future!

Excellent topic as usual Bjorn! It is very important to continue learning throughout life. I find reading, fiction and non fiction, to be very relaxing and helps me to re-energize for life's challenges. Disconnecting from the constant interruptions and distractions of social media to read a book is something we all should be doing. Even shut off CZcams for a time now and then lol!
    Have a good day everyone!

I make a lot of analogies on practical situation through abstract thinking. What I also experience is that everthing can be abstracted down to our most basic instinctive behaviours. Mainly revoling about the animalistic relation between men and women and the motivations of the two.

Hello Bjorn. I would like to say that i rather stay curious than studying. They’re not contraries, i know, but “studying “ has a hint of scholarship that i tend to minimize in importance, the older i get. I believe in studying, but i think that curiousness enables you to try and think out of the box, even after acquiring a particular new knowledge.
So I’d say “stay curious “, but be humble. Studying is important, but not as to “acquire levelness”. Hope this made some sense. Kind regards.

I am very lucky to have Owls where I live and Owls have often been described as Wise "the wise owl" and it is easy to see why, if you think about it. Owls are often seen to be perched in a tree observing the world around them for long periods of time. This may be the Anthropologist in me but I like to sit in busy parks or a meadow for instance and just observe people or nature and I find I learn so much by just watching and listening. So maybe I am becoming wiser to the world around me. A side benefit is it is relaxing as well

Wisdom is so critical to life because it is life itself. Without wisdom, a man can’t find his soul and live his life the way God intended. Plus, wisdom is critical in life situations where knowing how to choose wisely is the difference between life and death.

Matty Claxton start with the proverbs from the Bible, or The Art of War, maybe a good book on fly fishing, then go and read the book that teaches all wisdom The Book of Nature. Watch the birds, the trees, the bees. Maybe carry a book of poetry to read or a journal to write what You see. Wisdom comes from doing. A proverb: Proverbs are not real till they are lived!

The greek trivium and quaddrivium made up the 7 arts. If you rotate these 7 arts in your books/arts/crafts you will become a very lerned man and perhaps even wise. Perhaps Vitruvius "10 books on architechture", Cenninis "Libro dell artes", Aurelius "Emperors handbook" or Brave new world by Huxley. I also like most books by Solzjenitsyn, atm reading "Cancerclinic". On my list that I have yet to read are "General Chemistry" by Atkins Beran and "sun and steel" by yukio mishima

    • @MikevanHattum

In my opinion any book about history will work. Wisdom often comes from mistakes made. Learn not only from your own mistakes, but also of other people's mistakes. As Jay Jackson says, you could use the art of war or the proverbs from the bible. Those never really worked for me. I rather read about things that interest me (and the bible is definitely not interesting to me). So figure out where your passion lies, if it is bushcraft for example, read books about survival, bushcraft etc. as a start. And if you really get into it, start asking yourself questions on why you would do it that way, or what you would do different in such situations. And start research from that point on if your way would be more effective. This also works for other subjects. I prefer reading history and science books, to understand how the world works and why it works that way.
The best way to find wisdom is question everything and wonder why and how things work, and have worked like that for so long and is still being used. If you can put it to practice, find your own way of doing things, and learn from failure as well as success. Books are nice, but putting things to practice by actually doing it, is the best way to learn, in my opinion. Books are just a very personal selection, what ever works for you, works for you. But practice in real life....that is golden :)

I have three grown Grandsons ranging in age from 21 to nearly 30 years old, they lost their father when they were very young, their father was a young man himself, just 37 years old. Since the loss of their father, I've tried to guide them in life, and teach them about nature. They have responded well to my advice about life in general, but could not care less about nature, I have tried so hard over the years to show them what nature has to offer us mentally and physically, but to no avail. They were brought up with these computers and other devices and could not care less about what lays outside of four walls. I think it's a tragic shame, but it is what it is I guess.

I shared my experiences with a man who came onto our ranch, I just shared my experiences, he said it changed his life, like I was actually real... This viking is being real, cherish that, because in this sheltered world you will not find it often.

Men need to develop a curiosity of the World around them and a thirst to learn and share with others in particularly their children. Take care Brother, Chris.
