Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (Arcade) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Konami's 1991 license-based arcade beat 'em up, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
Played through as Michaelangelo on the default difficulty setting. Once the game ends at 35:45 I let the attract sequence play on loop to show the different character profiles. Finally, at 41:07 I load up the service menu to run the machine's diagnostic sound test. Any excuse to blast more orchestra hits, you know?
Konami created a lot of arcade classics back in the late 80s/early 90s. Contra, TMNT, Sunset Riders, Asterix, G.I. Joe, Bucky O'Hare, X-Men, Vendetta, Violent Storm, Metamorphic Force... the list goes on and on, but few of them are held in quite as high regard as Turtles in Time.
It looked like a playable version of the cartoon to my eyes in 1991, and it knew how to kick things off with a bang: the intro plays a lengthy digitized clip of Pizza Power, a song from the TMNT album that was featured in Pizza Hut's Coming Out of Our Shells tour. What kid would've ever been able to ignore such a siren song blasting from an arcade cabinet's speakers, or to resist the appeal of the game's massive four-player control panel?
Just about anyone that can remember when it came out can tell you how impressive it was in its time. Video games as we knew them just didn't look like this yet!
And not just that, but it was everywhere! Arcades, bowling alleys, fast food joints, pool halls - I personally remember playing it at the Navy Exhange and the cart area of a Sam's Club back in the day.
The general consensus that has formed over the years seems to be that the SNES port surpassed the original arcade game, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree. It was better fleshed out with new stages, different bosses, a remixed soundtrack, and an improved control scheme. Those aren't knocks against the excellent arcade game though - they're just testaments to how far above and beyond Konami went in bringing the game home. The content differences and the more fluid animation make this one still well worth checking out!
Let's kick shell!
One last thing - I wonder just how many of us made up our own words to the intro because we couldn't make out the actual lyrics. I still laugh thinking about how my buddy Tim told me how he used to hear "we don't sleep with our parents."
In case you were wondering, here are the real lyrics:
Growing up in a glass bowl
with chameleons, lizards, and tadpoles,
it hardly enters your mind
that there's something better than this.
A lettuce leaf and a carrot,
maybe a seed from a parrot,
believe me when I tell you
the word gourmet just don't exist.
But pizza power,
a flying saucer food delight,
pizza power,
oh, that's what makes us feel all right.

Remember just how big a deal this game was when it came out back in 1991?
Yesssss
You’re killing it with these Turtles games. Also, you must love Asterix so much since you mentioned it twice
@@HrvojeGrahovac Thanks! Hahaha you're right, oops.
It's such a big deal to me, I bought a arcade cabinet of it. It's in my game room next to MK 1-3 and NBA Jam.
Yes the Cowabunga Collection is coming soon to PS5 and Switch
0:41 My toes! My toes! 🤣 Man, so many childhood memories. 😁
The arguably even better sequel to the already-classic 1989 arcade Turtles. What is there left to say? It's widely considered one of the most iconic beat-em-ups of all time.
The setpieces are a step up in variety, thanks to the time travel gimmick. We already cover New York with the first three stages, so Konami had us fighting off Foot through the stone ages, colonial times, old west, the woefully overromanticized "future" (let's say it's an alternate 2020 where Shredder and Krang took over with their advanced technology), and a space station before facing off with the Shred-Head to save Lady Liberty. It's ridiculous and makes zero sense, but then again, TMNT, so it fits. What an adventure.
Turtles in Time is the gold standard of a licensed game done with extreme care for the source material and making a good game in general. The graphics are bright and appealing, there's a ton of variety to the enemies you battle across the different eras, there are digitized quips that might provoke a laugh or two, and don't even get me started with the soundtrack. I think the beauty of the 90s, I think about this game as a factor in defining the decade. This was a time and achievement like no other that has truly...stood the test of *Time. **_COWABUNGA!!!_*
Cowabuunga indeed, good Sir.
musho testo
When I look back at games like this and Doom and other games from that era, it’s like…they were so remarkably simple. But they were designed well and had great graphics and music and were super fun. I played 90s Doom for the first time last year and had such a blast with it. It’s fun to just return to an era of games where things were less complicated. I’m excited to fire this game up when the collection comes out.
Now *THIS* is what I'm talking about! 1991 was my favorite year... and TMNT: Turtles in Time was one of my favorite arcade games of all time. This was before TMNT IV: Turtles in Time was released on the Super Nintendo system. I had to use all four quarters while playing as Michelangelo. Did I mention that voice talent Townsend Coleman had me at *COWABUNGA?*
I am so happy this and many other classic TMNT games are coming to modern consoles soon. With online play, no less! :D
Man, they have so many childhood memories. 😁 It'll be even fun to have some funny moments together throughout the world online like at 0:41 "My toes! My toes!". 🤣
Yes glad to see some classic TMNT coming to current systems , could do very well without leaderboards or online at all for that matter, , ,
SNES version may be better, but I vastly prefer this versions’ soundtrack. God, listen to that slap bass in Sewer Surfing and Neon Night Riders. A clear case of where I wish we had the best of both worlds.
I agree the SNES version better games
I prefer the music in "Hyperstone Heist" the most, to be honest. But, the SNES and Arcade soundtracks are just as amazing.
@matt sega is very poooor.. snes is bether... is a fact.
@matt so you say
@matt Tell everyone you're a biased and very wrong bastard without telling the world you're a biased and wrong as hell bastard.
Pssst, console sales say otherwise, your side lost by 9.1 million units worldwide. Time to let it go, wars over and you're still riding it's dead, cold, decomposed corpse. The SNES TMNT games are still fondly remembered, Hyperstone Heist is only remember by those who played it back in the day. For the record, I own both TMNT for both systems, I find something I like about TiT and HH.
I played this game recently at an arcade and loved it so much! It was one of the best beat em ups I’ve ever played!
Hurry up, Konami. I need the Cowabunga Collection soon!
Coming August 30th!
@@elluciano5808 Oh yeah! I need to preorder then. Thanks.
Finally we got to this masterpiece. I had never seen a gameplay of the Arcade version. It's awesome and the music's got great quality too
Especially Neon Night Riders! 😎
@matt Maybe you're right 🙂
Well TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection is now available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, & Nintendo Switch. It has all TMNT games from NES, SNES, Game Boy, Genesis, and Arcade (which includes TMNT 1989 arcade & TMNT: Turtles in Time Arcade 1991 Version)
this is insane for 1991
My best friend and I used to play the SNES version all the time. Naturally before some Saturday evening pizza.
13:28 - Wow, totally different boss than on the Snes! No Slash! 😲
@matt Yep you're right, never did! Only the Snes version. 🤷🏼♂️😀
@@jonathanturbide2232 Actually, that's an upgrade from the arcade version. They actually put in Slash over the cement doof. Plus Bebop & Rocksteady too!
@@edwardgaines6561 Agreed! I much prefer the bosses on snes, having no Bebop and Rocksteady in a TMNT game is almost criminal! 😂
@@jonathanturbide2232 Also, plot-wise it's better to get time-warped from the Technodrome in the SNES version than from the sewers in the arcade version. That made no sense at all.
Dudes and dudettes, major league butt-kicking is back in town! 🐢
I'm telling you this is one of the greatest games ever made of all time there will never be another game that would be as just as close to as perfect as this

@@JordanManfrey what if it did and no one got to see it because we were all in quarantine?
@@game84cube If you really wanna go way back, we should look like _The Jetsons!_
@@JordanManfrey Man, I wish the SNES version had the actual stage and not the skimpy "bonus chance."
@@edwardgaines6561 It's also one of the easiest stages in the game if you do the "pacifist trick".
I still remember to this day going to the Arcades.
It was one Saturday evening in the 90’s and loved playing so many games at the Arcades when I saw people playing TMNT: Turtles in Time I put my quarter on the screen and waited for my turn.
I had so much fun playing TMNT: Turtles in Time and listening to the loud music.
But it gets even better one Friday night I was looking through gaming magazines(I believe it was Gamepro)and saw a preview of TMNT: Turtles in Time for SNES.
I had to try it out and went to the video store to see if they had the game.
When I went there it was on the rack in its SNES empty box glory.
AVAILABLE TO RENT!!!
And to celebrate I went to the supermarket to buy soda, candy and chips.
I couldn’t wait to play the game so I ran home with the bag in my hand and when I got home I put the cartridge in my SNES and played until 5 am.
So much fun!
Great times as a teenager!
😊😊😊
those animations are REALLY smooth gah dayum
The Pizza Hut “Coming Out of Their Shells” tour with the TMNT doing music had them perform “Pizza Power” as their cross hit that made the soundtrack for this game.
On the bury my shell at Wounded knee Level you can hear the Notes from Sunset Riders since both these games are Made by Konami.❤
I rarely saw this in arcades, but mainly because i was already obsessed with the SNES version. It certainly was different
Interesting, I thought this one was developed for the SNes, never knew it was an arcade release first.
That's because most people will refer to the SNES port as Turtles in Time. Not the Arcade original.
22:46 The alternate 2020 that people wanted instead.
You got that right.
I like the arcade game a lot, but I honestly prefer the snes sound font and the additional level in that version. Plus I also think the choice of Slash being the boss of Prehistoric Turtlesaurus is much better than Cement Man. Plus I also enjoy the Final boss being super shredder, which makes his appearance in Turtles 2 more disappointing.
Watching this makes me feel like a kid walking into the arcade with a pocket of game tokens. Aladdin's Castle, Space Port and Tilt 1988-1993 best gaming times for my brother and I. That's the arcade and home systems. We had them all at one point. NES,SNES, and GENESIS. All connected to the TV in our room. Our friends couldn't believe it. Christmas break was paradise. An entire week of no school and games.. LOL
I played this game and only got up to Leatherhead before running out of quarters when I played this game at an arcade for a birthday party when I was a kid. Good times
My cousin and I would always do the double Raphael glitch. Such a legendary game.
What's that ? Is it difficult to do this glitch?
ironically the snes version is widely regarded as the superior version
also we do *NOT* talk about reshelled
That game was a f*ing abortion.
When I was a kid one of the first games I had for the SNES was Turtles In Time. I never knew there was an arcade version until me and my family walked in Burger King and they had this machine in the lobby. I watched someone play a little bit of it and I was impressed. Can't wait for the Cowabunga collection!
I will be 37 in April, and when i was a young child back in the early to mid 90's the movie theater by my house had this Arcade Game and also the The Simpsons game aswell. Nostalgia 🍻
Lots of differences from the SNES.
Yep, and while really fun the SNES version is just better overall.
@@masterlee1988 Yes.
This is why no one should be excited for the teenage mutant ninja turtles cowabunga collection for Nintendo Switch you can play all these games right now anywhere it’s just a $40 waste of money but for the xbox PlayStation you get achievements and trophies you get rewarded for playing the games Nintendo Switch im not buying for $40 Konami can’t even do remakes on their own games like capcom square enix did you’ll see a remake on final fantasy 7 that sucked on PS1 from square enix you will see a remake of resident evil 1 2 3 4 from capcom that weren’t so great on PS1 PS2 resident evil wasn’t great to me until resident evil 5 was released in 2009 that’s when I loved resident evil games and loved final fantasy games the xbox 360 and PS3 made a huge difference on games that sucked for the past 20 years from NES-PS2 now I want dragon quest 12 final fantasy 15 the only turtles game I want for the Switch is the one that you can play as Splinter and April don’t think I need to tell everyone the name of the game if they all love turtles games

Krang: "You're going to pay!" Me: would you take an IOU?
Great version, no doubt about it. But I prefer the SNES version a little more. Granted, it is missing some animation frames, the compositions are slightly worse, and you can only have up to 2 players. But with the cool new additions and gameplay that remains as fun as the Arcade version, that's something I'll gladly overlook.
Also: 40:58 😍
From what I can see there is also one stage that was added for the console release after the sewers
@@dreamllusion8390 Yes. That is the Technodrome stage.
@@Dorian_Scott IMO the SNES version is better than the arcade version. Arcade has better graphics, sound and 4 players but SNES does better in many other areas and it's much more manageable to 1CC compared to the arcade version which is extremely difficult to do due to how they didn't balance it properly.
props on choosing Mikey. I always played this joint as him.
Yeah he's technically the best Turtle in this game.
I like owning two snes carts of this game. This game’s getting expensive too.
Love the “winners don’t use drugs” message from the FBI Director
I remember playing this in the arcades as a kid, amazing game.
I like this one better than snes because it has voices in the cutscenes and new bosses and better animations
This game... What else can be said about Turtles in Time? It doesn't need any introduction at this point. Ask anyone about greatest beat em up games, greatest licensed games, and greatest cartoon based video games of all time; and this timeless classic would be their answer popping up on top 5 list of those mentioned categories. Without of doubt, one of classic Konami's finest titles they ever created, and ofc, the greatest TMNT game ever made.
Original arcade version - Baxter Stockman just turns pink and simply defeated on the rooftop.
SNES port - Baxter flutters to the back of the scenery, his gun explodes, causing him to fall to his death.
The ONLY thing I really wish is that this version would have the voice-over announcing the start of the level with what sounds like the _Garfield and Friends_ VA, because I love that in the SNES version. That, and I always appreciated being able to change the appearance of the turtles in the SNES version's options menu: You feeling animated series flavor, or something more like what Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird would envision? Otherwise, this is pretty much the best TMNT game ever made (and yes, I think the SNES version is just as good!).
I agree about the voiced announcement to each level. I still enjoy hearing "Big Apple, 3 AM" to this day. It was a nice touch in the SNES version.
The voice overs are actually in this version, but for some reason, the "Big Apple 3 AM" voice clip only plays on the 2nd loop
@@solarflare9078 The voice overs are in both versions, I do prefer what I'm pretty sure is Lorzenzo Music's VA on the SNES version, over what sounds like a different person in the arcade version.
How great would it be if Nickelodeon commissioned a new TMNT series based on both TMNT:THE NES ARCADE GAME and TURTLES IN TIME but with original plots for each episode?
Cowabunga Collection incoming August 30th your wish is granted
The same music from James Farr it was called teenage mutant koopa troopers
I’ve always loved how the Killer Pizzas looked like Xenomorphs
Them purple foot clan in the beginning of the second level run like cavemen 😂
Krang: You're going to pay.
Me: Whatever you say, Brainy.
Dude this was so cool back in the day
Although this version has superior audio "and a kicking rendition of Pizza Power" the SNES version still eats it's 🍕 lunch. That extra year of development really made the difference. I mean it not only had extra bosses but better ones too. Seriously Cement Man over Slash, and no Beebop and Rocksteady!?
I think long ago, someone said that Rocksteady and Bebop’s voices were in the Arcade game, as unused clips. So supposedly, there were plans to make them bosses in this version.
@@VahanNisanian That's neat.
Hell, Konami even threw in the Rat King too!
One thing about this game that I had noticed that the VOs of the Turtles sounded completely different compared to the original arcade game, which I thought was strange. Oh, well. 😑😐😶
"...you bloated beanbag!" Such harsh language! 🤬
Right? Such aggression!
This will be in Cowabunga Collection!!!! 😃
I Like This Final Fight Against Shedder More then The SNES Version
Michaelangelo, good choice.
It's amazing that videogame.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
33:59 the Statue of Liberty is looking like “ is that all the entertainment?”
Ah, you fancy yourself a Michaelangelo main, eh? Sometimes the classics hold true
Well, Michelangelo is the best turtle in this game along with Donatello!
Ah, a fellow chucker, eh?
@@DrZuluGaming actually I'm more of a Raphael guy myself. Either him or Leo. In Shredder's Revenge, I'm only having an issue with Donatello. I swear he has less defense than the others
There was a pizza place we use to go to as kids that had this, the simpsons, Area 51, golden tee when it first came out and Operation Wolf. Man my dad spent a lot of money in there 😂
amazing gameplay plz continue
I never knew this game originated as an arcade. Also I see the arcade have a few animation that were missing in SNES not to mention voice overs
I love the SNES version of this game
this was king compared to the 1989 game
Well, good friggin news, this version and the snes version is coming to the cawabunga collection this year
The year 2020 stage is highly inaccurate.
"Winners Don't Use Drugs" as i hit my bowl. Guess im a loser 😂😂😂
Nah, winners do use drugs but not alot. And not all the time. They take breaks as well.
34:15 (Play frame by frame with , and .) I like how arcade games' graphics tend to glitch out when transitioning screens quickly. I've seen this the most in Konami and Capcom games, especially Gradius 3 and Vulgus.

I gave you and your pet Godzilla a stroke lol 😂 😂 😂 your just a baby talker

My favorite part was trying to figure out what they were saying in the theme song (flying saucers in July?)
Flying saucer food delight for that line.
SNES is vastly superior
Such an awesome beat them up. And I dare say the SNES version was better in quite a few things. Rat King boss at the end of third level. A new Technodrome level following the sewer level, Toca and Rasa as a sub boss in this new level. A new Shredder fight in the Technodrome level. Bebop and Rocksteady replaced Toca and Rasa in the pirate ship level. Slasher in prehistoric level made much more sense then that weird blob thing. The new final boss, which was Super Shredder, could be a positive or negative. Idk.
Of course the OG Arcade version was better in some regards. More mob on screen, a few more mob types, more voices and clearer. 4 players. More animations.
Arcade version feels slightly unfinished. Going directly from the sewer to prehistoric times because ghost Shredder randomly decided to send you there with his mind beams (none of which is true of Shredder or his abilities) makes no sense. Still, those voice clips are very high quality.
How does that make it unfinished?
@@jaywest3734It actually doesn't make sense the way the arcade version did. The SNES version saw Konami correct that error.
@@jaywest3734It's not unfinished. Konami decided to expand the SNES game.

Its amazing that they made they made the super Nintendo verision a little darker and more violent and added in a couple extra levels extra bosses then changed a couple of them and then changed added in new extra enemies that weren’t in the arcade version. Level 1 and 2 bosses our the same .level 3 sewer surfing added the extra boss of the rat king. Extra level the techno drone mid boss fight toka and razor extra boss fight shredder in tank. Next level prehistoric turtle sauraus boss fight changed from cement men to slash. Pirate ship leaves skull and cross bones boss fight changed from toka and razor to bebop and rocksteady in pirate out fits. Special end beating one make then duel the other and the fight automatically ends after sound of explosion happens. Next stage boss is the same but has extra attack were he slash you with his tail and can throw a cray fish at you. More violent end fight animation leather head jumps off train then explodes. Next two levels boss fights the sam. Last level techodrome the finale shell shock finale boss change for the game. Boss changed from normal shredder to super shredder from the finale of teenage mutant ninja turtles 2.
snes version is better for the hit detection alone. it feels like you really hurt the enemies.. here its like you hit them with cotton swabs
Mikey was always the best turtle in this game, and the SNES version, because he was the strongest.
Yeah Mikey is definitely the best turtle in the arcade version with Donatello in 2nd.

It’s too bad hyper stone Heist never got an arcade release
