Back when Bernie Sanders, 2020 presidential election candidate, was mayor of Burlington Vermont he hosted this sometimes odd local access show. While Bernie, 2020 elections hopeful, has graduated to Fox News Town Hall events and U.S. Senator running for president among many 2020 democratic candidates, it's surprising to see where he came from. The field of 2020 democrats hoping to go up against Trump is vast with many of the 2020 election candidates aggressively campaigning more than a year and a half out from the election.

There is only 1 candidate, that you could take their 1980s footage and statements, and run them as ads for their Presidency today in 2019. That candidate is Bernie Sanders.
@Jim McCracken First of all a millionaire in the 1980s is not the same as millionaires today. Sanders is consistent in that millionaires should still be taxed at a higher percentage despite becoming a millionaire himself. He did not create his wealth by exploiting people but through book sales, and we know that because he has released his taxes. Donald Trump, like most politicians on both sides and most billionaires, is completely inconsistent. He's changed his party affiliation about half a dozen times and each time his ideology changes with it. Today Planned Parenthood needs to go, a few years ago he was donating money to them. He says whatever he needs to benefit him at the moment but has no core values.
@Jim McCracken he consistently has said that his model for democratic socialism are the Scandinavian countries, you can give me links to change my mind but I did my research. What he's saying is not even socialist. Using the logic everyone is saying somehow leads to the conclusion that we're the only capitalist country in the developed world and everyone else is socialist, which is just not the case.
@Jim McCracken I didn't say they are socialist I said the democratic socialists, it's how they describe them themselves. You could also say social democracy, but they're pretty interchangeable. Bernie also is not a socialist. He's a democratic socialist. You can look up the difference yourself but it's basically a capitalist system with social protections. We already have a lot of these social programs. Primary and secondary public school, police departments, fire departments, Medicare, social security, ect. are all social programs. By adding higher education and healthcare we're not suddenly going to become the Soviet Union.

The rest of the city government thought his election was a fluke and refused to do anything (they Mitch McConnell 'ed him). So what did he do? He went to the people and got public attention on the issues; the next election he handily won; and he was able to do his mayorial duties thereafter. So I wouldn't call it "too much time on his hands"

@Joe Curr you guys all need to just look at his 40-year record in politics to see he doesn't want to socialize anything but healthcare and education (which are already socialized to some degree! He just wants them more accessible to more people. As most European countries have shown us, having these basic rights make workers and economies more productive, and decrease income inequalities.)
Also please note that no country in the world is ALL SOCIALIST or ALL CAPITALIST . I personally believe a good balance (socialize things where profit shoudnt be a factor, like basic human needs, capitalize most other things) is key . and if you look at other free countries that also provide basic human rights for all, you will see. Even economists agree that China has many many capitalist features, which arguably have improved their economy since the famine in the 1970s. Studies and research from citizens show that yes they consider themselves communist, but that's more because the leading party calls itself communist. It's more of an ideology than a practice.
Authoritarianism is another factor that you have to think about when evaluating socialism vs capitalism. A more capitalist country with a dictator can feel like or become more communist. And vice versa. Bernie is not xi jinping or Putin and never will be, and if you think that you need mental help because his whole life proves otherwise.

He is a senator of Vermont, so, like most senators, he owns a house in his state. He also has to spend lots of time in DC, so, like most senators, he maintains a residence in DC. His wife inherited a house in Maine, from her family... They sold that, and with the proceeds bought a modest vacation home in a location they preferred.
Very modest assets, compared with most senators. And he was the poorest of all senators until he wrote a best-selling book.

His own income shot up only very recently, in his 70s - when he wrote a bestselling book. Prior to that, he was the poorest person in the senate for many years.
His wealth still pales in comparison to most in congress; and many have pointed out that 2 million is not considered great wealth by today's standards.
He continues the campaign to get taxes applied fairly to the wealthy and corporations, which would include raising taxes on himself.
There was no scam. Jane Sanders was cleared of all suspicion.

Mark Smith the Nordic models are not what he is proposing, and on paper the Nordic models may seem decent but they are still inferior to the US even with our limited healthcare system, ie heavier taxes, more government control (never a positive thing), also it’s helpful to note that Nordic countries are much smaller and less diverse than the US
