- Sixteen years before "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ended, then-Rep. Bernie Sanders took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to defend the "thousands of men and women who have put their lives on the line" to defend our country.
”Do we have to call the gentleman a gentleman if he's not one?”
She looks so proud of that one.
Hahahha yeah a little to much actually
Probably the best joke she's ever made.

Great 👍
Some guy: "I am a soldier"
American conservatives: "you are an honourable man. I will always love and respect you for what you have done for this country. Nobody should ever talk bad about such a great person like you"
Some guy: "I am also gay"
American conservatives: "fuck off I hate you"
they're quite selective with their respect haha
So is the left, they hate anything male or white that doesn’t hate itself
Things have come a long way since the 90s to be fair.
@@Atlastheyote222 as an American, I full heartedly understand why no one respects us truly on the global stage. We don't even know how to be respectful towards each other.
@@shaddaboop7998 Have they? Sure, you can't say that gays in the military are compromising national security today. But today plenty of politicians say transgender people are pedophiles, groomers, what have you. In Florida a teacher can get sued for having a pride flag on her desk because it violates the parent's bill of rights. Is that moving foreword? Things have certainly improved in some regards, but there will always be a new thing to dehumanize, a new thing to hate even if society moves on from one thing.
As a European i struggle so much to understand how Bernie isn't the most beloved politician you guys have. He actually wants to solve the problems everyone is suffering from
well unfortunately Bernie's ideas are seen as communist when in reality he embraces the idea that Europe has implented, things like universal health care, protecting the rights of marginalized groups, and so on; half of the USA still has archaic conditioning that is stopping a leader like bernie from becoming president
Bernie is openly socialist, which, because of years of propaganda from the government, means that liberals and conservetives tend to hate him or think he's a violent stalinist extremist. In most western countries, he would just be seen as a leftist politician, but in the USA he's a radical leftist, which automatically makes him evil to those on the other side.
The simple answer is just that America has a pretty skewed view of politics compared to most of the developed Western world. Bernie is left-wing. Truly left wing. In America that makes you... essentially an extremist. A communist.
@@manspaghetti6351 in Europe he would be centre left
I'm from germany and I noticed that there is no country with so much fearmongering and propaganda against communism as america. I'm not defending communism in any way, but the fact that a lot of americans think that things like universal healthcare are communistic is actually pretty worrying

How'd they get talking about gay soldiers and socialism in a debate about the Clean Water Act?
Ideology trumps reason in this country
A really common right-wing strategy is pretending all of the bad things in the world are connected. America was doing great until Cultural Marxism came along, then we got environmentalism, gay rights, women's rights, transgender people, secular education, welfare policies, and so on.
It’s a tactic I’ve seen a lot with republicans

Fun fact: The "gentleman" from California, while a confirmed fighter pilot with a Navy Cross (an actual ace), he would end up pleading guilty to accepting $2.4 million in bribes. He served eight years, but not before resigning from the House in 2005.
The gentleman from Vermont, on the other hand, was once arrested (with a smile, I might add)at a civil rights demonstration in 1963 involving school segregation.

@EmerBlox what does nazi stand for again?
or that's right national *socialist*
@@denenterpriesesorwhatsleft6386 Congrats, you fell for false advertising.
Hitler used the term Socialist as a term to pull people in aka propaganda. The Strassers expanded the Nazi party by tying nationalism and Socialism together to appeal to the working class and poor citizens. In the 1920s Hitler sought the support of wealthy industrialists to push anti-socialist policies. When Otto Strasser realized the Nazis were neither Socialist or a party of workers so he left to form the Black Front, the left wing section of the Nazi party. In the 30s Hitler aligned himself with nationalists and conservatives who believed and supported Facism solely. Not long after that Socialists, Communists, Jews, and democrats were purged from civil service and labor unions were outlawed which goes completely against the basic tenents of Socialism. Hitler also had Gregor Strasser and other Socialists murdered to keep down the dissent. Any traces of Socialism had been extinguised by the mid-1930s. I'm not sure how you got the idea that people are uneducated for bringing up the fact that he had Socialists killed and had them removed from their jobs. That's just a fact. I'm sorry you can't change history to fit your narrative but the Nazis were nationalists and despite 'free" healthcare they did not espouse basic socialist ideals.
The one thing I can say about Bernie Sanders is that he didn’t just jump on the woke bandwagon to try and appeal to the modern audience. He has been defending minorities his whole career and that’s admirable.
Yeah he’s been a retard his whole career true
Joe Biden is probably more racist than most republicans he just hides it in his policies

Sanders always has had a twisted mind in politics. My generation is going to have to grow up with the mistakes politicians have made in the 1990’s-today in regards to social issues.
To the LGBTQ+ Americans who have served in the military: I just want to say thank you for your courageous service; I commend your bravery. @JHeints - Makes no sense. How is it socialism to want our taxes to go where they are most needed? E.g., going towards free education and things like raising the minimum wage, or universal healthcare (that other 1st world countries already make use of).
@JHeints - Why do we have a $700B military budget? Absolutely no need for it to be that much. Tanks are produced and just sit on lots costing taxpayers millions every year, when that money could be better spent elsewhere. Should we have to subsidize our war-hungry presidents' expenditures, brought on by fiscally poor decisions? Somehow it's fine for a snake bite to cost a camper $140k in medical bills, and also fine to be mass producing tanks for $4.3 million a unit when they won't be used by anyone...
Not sure what country you're living in where college is cheap. Go to a top school or even a public 4 year university after transferring credits from a community college and you're still looking at tens of thousands a year in loans. That's not even including professions like medicine or law, where students are required to take out $200k+ in loans that definitely won't be getting paid off in two years after graduation unless you want to sleep in your car and shower at the local gym.
@JHeints - Paying anything for college is expensive by comparison when looking at other first world countries that have government funded four year degrees.
Likewise, there are more than just a handful of EU nations that provide free or extremely low cost post-secondary education while also allowing access to universal healthcare; namely Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, and France.
Is it any surprise, then, that most of these countries also rank among the highest in the world in terms of 'happiness'?
The status quo has worked for us, and will continue to work, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a new, better standard that would fit Americans better. That's what we should strive for.
@JHeints - The fuck kinda college are you going to? Community? ROFL.
@JHeints - Are you seriously saying america doesn't have a student debt problem? Or a medical spending problem when America has the most expensive healthcare system in the world?
It doesn't matter how cheap or expensive your degree is. On the whole, it is a problem, and that's undeniable.
“Sit down you socialist” that’s an insult for when you realize your “opponent” is making more sense than you.
Exactly, and it’s still used today. People will throw out words like woke, communist, and socialist whether or not they are applicable. I may be a Conservative and not like Bernie Sanders (I agree with a bit of what Duke Cunningham said) but people have a right to live their lives how they wish.
Sanders. Always on the right side.
It Is so effin funny how americans use "socialist" as an insult
This whole thing seems like a well scripted comedy sketch to me. The whole "gentleman" dialogue sounds 100% like satire.
It's honestly a little sad that this is real but that's the world we live in.
It is. If people were the good Christians they often claim to be they would support more socialism in the US. The US is the most ungodly and least Christian so called Christian country I can think of.

I’m gay, and I am very grateful for what currently pro-gay politicians have done, but many of them used to be anti-gay. Even Obama and Clinton had more conservative views in the past. Sanders was defending gays here way before it was popular. I actually teared up.
I was anti gay because I was taught that way. As soon as I was more informed on those issues, I flushed it down the toilet like a piece of crap it was.

Markus also I’m tried of hearing lgbt rights in first world countries like they have less than we do. You want to stand up for gay and trans people go to the middle east where they are literally fighting for their life just because of their lifestyle. Gays and transgenders are not oppressed in first world countries. The ones in third world countries are the ones worth fighting for. Those are the ones who have it hard.

There's a huge misconception that if a gay man (even a soldier) comes into contact with any other man, he will immediately only think of sex and flirting. Straight people flirt, gay people flirt, neither would do so in the middle of a flipping warzone.
Quick Update: not only this but there also seems to be this illusion that male straight soldiers and female straight soldiers will be somehow more stoical and less prone to romantic attraction. Thanks to Notequalto /// for the idea.

If you're born after 9/11 I'm pretty confident you have no idea how openly and wholeheartedly homophobic the entire culture of the United States was until only about the mid to late 2010s. Like, super super recently things changed en masse, but it's not like there's just some people in a backwater not being ok with gay people. I'm the youngest millennial, but I watched it happen in real time. Gay was THE insult when I was a kid, I'm talking 1st and 2nd grade calling each other gay which we only understood to mean "bad, stupid or weak". This was a topic in high school for us, in 2008-2012. Even Obama was openly against gay marriage, because EVERYONE HAD TO BE at the time to hold any sort of office. It changed before my eyes, they had commercials with teen celebrities telling us, the teens who were on MySpace and the first young users of Facebook, that it wasn't ok to say "gay" as an insult.
So for this man to be standing up IN CONGRESS the year after I was born and defending gay people was career unalive. Absolutely self imolation, unheard of at the time and for another 15 plus years onward. The bravery, the amount of principle and self respect, the sheer immovable morality of this man to say this at the time was a level of bravery that bordered on stupidity.
At this time Clinton was president, and he, with MASSIVE support, enacted "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" meaning nobody could ask and nobody could announce anything relating to sexuality in the United States military. There was a literal legal gag order on coming out in the military. Admitting to being gay in the military was grounds for dishonorable discharge, which is essentially as bad as a felony conviction on your record.
This man truly had morals that today politicians have to pretend to have always had, when not 10 years ago they were openly opposing homosexuality, gay marriage and the banning of Don't Ask Don't Tell.
You young kids really can't grasp just how opposite the views on gay people were, and while gay people are almost the bare minimum normal now and we talk about trans and non binary and gender fluid and all manner of gender and sexuality deviation so prominently and fervently now, these words simply didn't exist in any meaningful capacity at the time. Transgender was seen as cross dresser at worst and "trans sexual" at best. It was not a topic whatsoever.
I don't know if your generation is lucky or cursed, but know that mine and those right before me lived through an entirely opposite America with 180 degree fully opposite culture and morals.
Lol its gonna happen again in US
