The small door is called a wicket gate. They existed for several reasons. They could be opened and closed more quickly. It was also easier to control entry as only one person could enter at a time. An example of a use would be you close the gates for the evening. If anyone shows or leaves after rather than open the big gate you just open the wicket gate.

I also imagine it to come in handy in case of negotiations with enemies. Instead of opening the big gate and exposing a weak point to the enemy, you could step out, get the parley over with and get back in. Easier to defend.

@@patross60 This is a significant part of the reason. Wicket gates were for convenience but could be forced open. Making it smaller than even the average height made it almost impossible to properly fight through so you had someone waiting with a heavy weapon to bash them as they tried to force it. Same reason for the construction of castle tower stairs. They were designed to make it MUCH harder to fight upward than downward for people with a dominant right hand.
Medieval fortress designers had a looooong time to perfect their craft.

The little door is a sallyport. It was used to allow people in and out of the castle without having to open the big doors every time. It was also used to send out soldiers during a siege to conduct night attacks and counterattacks, hence the term "sally forth."

In Germany, the small door was used as a nighttime security device after city gates are closed. Anyone wishing to enter in late had to crawl through, putting themselves in a vulnerable position to guards who could easily question and quickly kill an unwanted outsider. I've also heard of this being called The Eye of the Needle, in reference to the Biblical quote.

Tiny doors in the big doors are common among firehouse, hangars, and bay doors in general, and it would seem castles. Just a much more ergonomic and easy way to pass through said large doorways designed for bigger vehicles. Less wear and tear on heavy duty hinges I'd imagine too.

Cheesy as hell but incredibly entertaining, and the woman who turns into the demon is drop dead gorgeous. Must-see!

Okay, the tiny door inside the big door thing is because the big door is opened for major events that will have a large number of people going in and out, while the little door is just for individuals and small groups. Hey, it takes a lot of effort to open and close the big door, and it'll let a lot of heat in/out when it gets opened too. Castles like that don't have central heating and air, so you've got to do what you can to keep the temperature under control.

The wicket was one person wide and was for a few one or a few people. Being easier to open for small foot traffic and to also allow small foot traffic through during siege. You didn't want to have the big heavy doors open while being attacked.

Holy shit. This whole thing was vaguely familiar but not until the chair are a gal did I remember this movie. Man I've seen this twice at my dad's a couple years apart as a kid, and never knew the name of it until now. Heh thanks man.

I'm so glad someone else noticed the Adam Ant bore a resemblance to Billy Crystal.. I thought the exact same thing when I first saw one of his videos in the 80s

More effort to open the big doors made for horses and/or carriages for people, so they made smaller easier doors to open for individuals while still using the same entrance for all other types of transportation at the time.

Rex also played the DTV Host on Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Adam Ant looks like Seamus Deaver.
