  • The Toyota Camry might be a hot seller but it’s not the most thrilling midsize sedan. With the 8th-generation model Toyota aimed to infuse emotion into their mainstream Camry sedan by cranking up its style quotient. Nonetheless, this new, edgier Camry has been carefully engineered to not alienate Toyota loyalists. Offering strong value, a robust standard safety roster, excellent resale values, and a range of efficient engines, including a fuel-sipping hybrid model, the 2018 Camry is poised to be the best Camry yet. Join Kelley Blue Book’s Micah Muzio as he puts the latest Toyota Camry to the test.

      It depends on who makes the "assumptions", sir.
      You actually need to speak to individuals who make living either repairing all car makers' models, preferably speaking to them off their work site in a casual setting and manner, like a buddy to to a buddy, and with those who have no reason to be biased, with them just using first hand experience, straight facts and numbers, and/or those who have had an UNDISPUTED and UNBIASED reputation of reviewing car brands and models which, I concede, are very hard to come by these days, as money talks. However, there aren't impossible to search for and find, if one puts in an effort.
      Toyota and, LEXUS in particular, have dominated the reliability, the resale value, the level of depreciation and dependability for so long, that it can hardly be any longer based on assumptions.
      The case in point, my beloved LEXUS Team have installed top notch electronics into their models ever since 1989, and lo and behold, electronics have held up more than fine over the decades.
      Keep it in mind, sir, that the Japanese take true and, quite frankly, almost unprecedented pride in making cars, which they build with great quality, care and ridiculously close attention to detail, the masterpiece and the pinnacle of craftsmanship and artisanship called LS 500 comes to mind, and that if something does go wrong on any model, they will promptly identify the problem and fix it, as we have witnessed before.

    Those new Accords with direct injection turbo engines will all blow up in 5 years because most people don't even know how to maintain their cars, and no those engines will require more than just a routine oil change when it hits 30k miles. People who say the current Accord is better have NO CLUE about cars.

    The 2018 Toyota Camry is the first family sedan with a base engine making over 200hp, which is impressive for a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine. Over 25 years ago, a Toyota Camry with a V6 engine made around 200 hp.

    I rented a 2018 Camry for 6 days and, with the exception of good gas mileage, I thought it was awful. I’m 5’11 and 190.
    A few issues I had:
    -Every time I got in I hit my head on the rearview mirror.
    -The contoured seats made it difficult to get in and out.
    -If you need to retrieve an item from the front passenger floor, you’ll need to either get out and walk around to the other side, or get up on your knees on the drivers seat to reach down.
    -The window ledge is too high to comfortably support your elbow and forearm.
    -You feel like you’re sitting in a 50 gallon drum just with more padding.
    -If you’re in an accident they’ll have to use the “jaws of life” to extricate you. Hell, I almost had to call the rescue squad to get me out when I stopped for gas.
    -The doors are eight feet long. You will hit every car you park next to and every gas pump you stop at.
    -Because the doors are eight feet long, you have to close them halfway before you get in, otherwise you won’t be able to reach the door handle.
    -You have to be a yoga master to reach back for the seatbelt since they put it about a foot behind the drivers head. Try touching your left shoulder blade with your right hand while touching your right forearm to your left ear. I did this 8 times a day for 6 days. Now I’m addicted to opioids.
    Look, I’ve rented some crappy cars over the years and I’m not proud of it, but this Camry sucked the joy out of my life for almost a week.
    When the rental agency asked if I wanted their insurance I think they were talking about the mental therapy sessions I’d need when I returned it.
    I should have said yes 😞

    Great review! Bought my ‘18 in July ‘23. Drives very smooth! It is VERY low to the ground, so weak knees are not encouraged! Great gas mileage. Plenty of room everywhere. The trunk is deep and holds tons! My second Camry ever.

    I really liked the 2012-2014 model Camry but the refresh in 2015 wasn't the most attractive in my opinion. However, this new version makes me want to upgrade from my 14.5 model.

      Bad Drivers of Maryland I have 14.5 also! I like that it’s smooth but it shifts so rough when it’s cold and downshifts hard when I hit the gas hard on the highway. Other than that I love it :( does yours have any of those quirks?

    Toyota has always given more reliable vehicles. Honda Fan boys might want to research "Honda Complaints" vs "Toyota Complaints". You will see Honda has double the complaints while they have 1/10 the number of Toyota's. Bottom line, Toyota is Luxury and Honda is Speed, you choose. PS. Toyota is heavier, better safety and quieter drive.

Oh, and i am controlling all of this through my steering wheel.. maybe people should just consider getting a higher trim Camry if you want those conveniences.... oh, but way.. most of these YT trolls can't even afford base trim Camry's or Accords.. they are just here to troll...

The sport models do have sport tuned suspension and some other things that really make it a deferent car. Test drive both and you can tell them apart from there handling too.

      my parents have an XLE in Blizzard Pearl with black leather interior... i love it except for the fact that the front doesn't look as aggressive as the other models, and it doesn't have the black grill-like streak under the outer sides of the tail lights. My mom always drives it in Eco mode and I always ask her to do sport mode..

    • @MatthewBoudot1
      @MatthewBoudot1 Před 6 lety +2

      Nice! I have the mode settings as well. Sport mode definitely is more fun to drive in! However it does use more fuel as it titans of the power steering and revs high. Around the city with all the starts and stops is where eco mode really can save some fuel. But on the freeway or a Mountain Pass Road the sport mode is definitely my choice. Worth the little extra fuel consumption.
      I pay about $300 Canadian a month in fuel on mine averaging a combined 9.8 L per 100kms (so far I’ve done 9,000kms on it) when your the one paying for the car and the gas it’s nice to save a little sometimes haha.

    Drove LE model today and what I noticed it's pretty smooth ... they changed the way to set up side mirrors from circle button to switch-stick ( no no on road it's not easy and intuitive), rear window is mush smaller than in my 2017 SE model and because of high headrests on back seats you'll see much less when you look in a middle mirror( 👎)lane assistant works very good and fast( 👌),
    No CD and I don't even talk about CD changer which I had in my 2011 XLE model (👎👎👎), scout gps looks good but I gonna try it tomorrow and gonna add comment about it, side mirrors more Square at ends than 2016-2017 models which I really love(👌👌👌)... that's all which I noticed for few first hours of driving...

Great for having more control. The interior works well for me with its clearer appearance. I also had no problem linking my LG phone to the Bluetooth. I also ride with 30 psi tire pressure in summer for a better ride , that the 16 inch tires with the LE give me. Paying more money (SE) for a harsher ride , made no sense to me. I am very happy with my car.

    Really wish Toyota would suck it up and start accepting that Apple CarPlay is the market trend. I was in the market for a fuel efficient, comfortable commuter car and was considering the Camry but opted for a higher trim Civic instead for this reason alone. Before anyone goes off on these being two different classes of vehicles the Civic has gotten quite large, the Camry posts similar mpg numbers with the four cylinder, and the LE trim was within spitting distance price-wise of a Civic EX-L with Sensing.

      Windgrace I really don't know what Toyota's problem is Android auto/car play. From what I've gathered, they're concerned about security? Yea right, then they offer that scout gps thing which is basically like Android auto which mirrors your phone, so what tf is their issue?

    • @Windgrace
      @Windgrace Před 6 lety +7

      That's not really an excuse for Toyota to not offer the latest tech that consumers by and large want in their vehicle in 2017. Your statement could apply for any car tech. People were fine without niceties like adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring, but the market now demands those features and that's why automakers are starting to integrate those features as standard. Toyota is just being stubborn about AA/AC.

      It's not so much as buying a car just for android auto or carplay, but when new cars are so competitive, it's often the small stuff that you decide on. Android auto and Carplay just make sense. Why the hell should we rely on an auto manufacturer to do what smartphone manufacturers already do 10 times better?

    Everybody complains about lack of AndroidAuto/CarPlay, but they're unusable for me because I sometimes like to stream audio through my web browser (not allowed through AA) or CZcams or even just a 3rd-party app. Literally every car from one with an old-school radio with an AUX port to the latest system with AA/CP are not appreciably different to me.
    Are there really so few other people who listen to audio stream this way that lack of smartphone integration is even worth mentioning?

    I love this new Camry...HOWEVER, it still lacks many features of its competitors. This new Camry got some things correct, but still lacks features like memory seats, heated AND cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and no AA/AC like most of its competitors have. I really don't care for AA/AC though. I used it before and it's nice and all but i don't consider that a deal breaker in my opinion. I'm hoping Toyota will fix this and make it even more competitive!

    The Camry exterior styling is very nice, the inside is ok but nothing to knock my socks off. Compared to my 2014 Altima SV is not that much bigger in interior space. Visibility is good; however, the chrome trim around the a/c vents tend to create a visual distortion in the side view mirror. Power is good once you really step on the peddle, nice acceleration for 206 horsepower. I have more leg room in the front of the Altima than I do in the Camry, but more leg room in the rear of the Camry. I'm not a fan of the car driving for me, so the first time the car tried to correct the lane change when i didn't use the turn signal it took me by surprise, same when it slows down because of cars in front of you.............I can do without that.

    So, you really want a car with gills? I remember your first impression of the new Camry design at the auto show. You said nothing, but made all kinds of strained facial expressions showing shock and dismay over Toyota's design choices. Is ugly really the new beauty? Is hideous now considered sporty? Is repugnant, over-the-top Liberace/Las Vegas glitter style interior design truly a automotive asset? Is Toyota so powerful that reviewers don't want to offend the hand that feeds them?

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio Před 6 lety +3

      Christopher Calder The trick with design is that our reaction to it changes over time. Cars that inspire immediate love often lack staying power while some designs slowly grow on us. With time I’ve made my peace with the new Camry.
      More importantly, my opinion isn’t that critical. You guys can make up your own mind. I’m usually more opinionated about design during auto show videos because that’s my first impression but for full reviews we’ve all seen the shape. I try to be more restrained in my aesthetic criticism.
