  • Lets install a new LS timing chain into this LS 5.3 truck motor that had over 200,000 miles on it in the junkyard truck that it came out of, this is how we replaced the timing chain in our LS engine.
    They are many different ways you can replace your LS engines timing chain, this is no way the by the book way on replacing the timing chain, but it works.

    On that timing chain when you had it too dead center with the new chain on it did it still have play? I’ve noticed it didn’t have a tensioner neither does mine and just double checking before I put everything back on if it’s supposed to have a little play or is it supposed to be tight

    • @TattsForLife
      @TattsForLife  Před 2 lety +3

      it depends on the chain, this one had a little bit of play, I did one on my 6.0 ls and it had no play, I think its just depends on the band, a little bit of play is ok, as when the engine heats up the timing chain will tighten up some from the heat

      @@TattsForLife hey! I just finished up my truck! I started right after watching this video.
      Ended up doing some extra stuff while I was in there!
      -cam gear, timing chain, retainer plate, new melling pump, all gaskets and such too! I ended up cutting the tab on the oil pick up tube so I can flip it around and use the other bolt hole! Worked perfect.
      Anyway, started the truck with the old oil (just to check) SHE'S AT 42!!
      Up from 18 baby!!!
      Thanks so much again for the visuals and directions. Off for another 250k on my truck 😂!

    I'm new to LS builds. Does the timing chain have a tensioner in between it?

  • @briankinzer4175
    @briankinzer4175 Před 3 měsíci

    I put mine on and one side was tighter than the other so I back it to the other side a link and it evened out. But the truck now runs rough at idle and I’m worrying I might have accidentally retarded the timing by doing that. I can’t remember which way I shifted the extra link to so what direction do I shift it a link to un-do what I did? It starts up fine and runs good but has a rough almost cammed idle but it’s all stock ls7 lifters 7.350 pushrods and new head bolts/gaskets.

    Just an fyi its recomended to never cool metal with water as rapid temp change for metal causes weakening or possibly crack it

    Did you soak your new chain in oil?

    • @TattsForLife
      @TattsForLife  Před 2 lety

      you can if you want to, most my chain installs I do not soak them, but on some I do lol never had any issues

    • @TattsForLife
      @TattsForLife  Před 2 lety

      readjust your chain on the gears while the gears are off

    • @johndoe-oh4sd
      @johndoe-oh4sd Před 2 lety

      So I just get the crank bolt adjust that to TDC then take the timing chain off and move the cam sprocket over till it matches?

    • @TattsForLife
      @TattsForLife  Před 2 lety +1

      @@johndoe-oh4sdthey should be some videos on it, but the number 1 piston needs to be at top dead center, and when it's there the dot on crank should point to cam hole, then u like cam dot to the crank, if off one tooth readjust chain and install again, I would research some more videos if you not sure on how. Hope this was helpful

    • @TattsForLife
      @TattsForLife  Před 2 lety

      is your spark plugs still in the engine, if so could be compression, if not could be something interfering

  • @bronson2585

    This idiot goes through the trouble of using the crank pulley to align the timing cover seal only to heat it up and consequently destroy said seal 💀

    • @TattsForLife
      @TattsForLife  Před 5 měsíci

      Idk most the LS engines we run are done this way lol seals are just fine

  • @harleydavidson6896
    @harleydavidson6896 Před 2 lety

    All I got to say is why change a chain if u don't the gears and say bye bye to crank seal

    • @TattsForLife
      @TattsForLife  Před 2 lety

      I not seen many gears go bad due to oil not letting them wear, chains always have slack from heat and miles due to the way they are made, gears are solid steel, and as for crank seal it works, most of the time lol
