    Episode Notes:
    1. All games captured on the Mega SD FPGA Cartridge.
    2. There are actually a few things I prefer in The Silver Star over Eternal Blue, but overall, Eternal Blue is the better game.
    3. Shining Force CD and Robo Aleste just missed the top 10. Definitely honorable mention material.
    4. You'll notice that there are no FMV games. While I had been star struck by the technology early in the systems life, the reality of their gameplay quickly sobered me up. Very few FMV games remain worth playing IMO.
    5. As I have discussed in prior episodes, the Sega CD is by far my most troublesome system in my collection. Multiple failed units across pretty much every model. My luck has been awful with the device.
    6. I still have both my original Japanese Mega CD and my original Model 2 Sega CD. Both work as of this episode.
    7. Just the soundtracks of some of these actually make them worth playing. Terminator, Batman Returns, Lunar, and Final Fight CD are all excellent.
    8. Games covered:
    Flink
    Soul Star
    Popful Mail
    Lunar Eternal Blue
    Keio Flying Squadron
    Batman Returns
    Final Fight CD
    The Terminator
    Snatcher
    Sonic CD
    9. Music in this episode:
    00:14 Batman Returns Boss Battle
    06:40 Ghaleon's Theme
    22:01 Vay Intro Theme

    I have a demo disc of Keio flying squadron (which came with a Brittish magazine at the time) and if you finish he first level, you get a thanks for playing message and the demo ends. However, when you use a level select code and start at level 2, you can play the entire game, videos and all!
    And Snatcher is my favorite game of all time! It was indeed something completely different at the time and i still play it every 2 years or so (even though i already know the story inside/out). When you realise this game is from the mind of Hideo Kojima, you know what to expect! (Such as a 40+ minute ending cutscene). Absolutely amazing!

      @Monotech2.0 I agree. Both systems are actually terrible even at the time I didn't want one and still only got one after getting a Saturn a couple years ago but maybe it's to blame on Sega itself? Dunno but if you have fun with it that's all that matters. Got final fight and terminator on Sega CD and that's it and it's a blast but I know younger me would not be able to realize how fun a few games are compared to alot. Granted it's two of the best games on Sega CD but how many of the games on Sega CD or 32x on average are actually fun? 32x has like 30 games or somethin like that and the CD has not many either so it's really a challenge.

      The limited library of the Sega CD and 32X prevent them from being great consoles unfortunately. Wasted potential though, since I'm sure they would have developed a lot of great games for them if they stayed around longer.

    • @TheDutchGhost
      @TheDutchGhost Před 4 lety +15

      It wasn't just Sega, lots of third party developers in general also did lazy ports from the Megadrive/Genesis with an extra level and some new music attached instead of doing completely new titles that really made use of the CD's space.
      FMV was this really big hype in the 90s until the developers/publishers realized that it would never really replace "standard" games (games that play like games and not just making the right choice at the same time, ingame cutscenes that don't involve poor to average actors). People in general didn't want to watch an interactive video on their consoles.
      Only a handful of such titles were really good and they usually used FMV as cutscenes between normal gameplay.

      @andrewomahony9260 Před 4 lety +4

      @Hybrid Eye78 Glad I'm not the only one to think that Kalinske actually did worse for Sega than better. He tried way too hard to compete with Nintendo instead of just taking advantage of what Sega was good at, which was really good hardware with some out of the box games. Sonic was a fantastic game, don't get me wrong, but Sega was so much more than Sonic.

    • @andrewomahony9260
      @andrewomahony9260 Před 4 lety +2

      @Hybrid Eye78 Yep. Kalinske had no inclination of what Sega was good at, instead just pushing useless crap and more Sonic sequels that eventually got old. I only recently discovered how absolutely cool their older game library was.

      @Einsatzgruppen B if you’re really considering one you may want to look at the Polymega. I have owned three Sega CD consoles including a CDX which I currently own and love. They’re up there in price and a lot of them need a little TLC to keep them going relative to their age like replacement capacitors, replacement CMOS battery (not a big deal), potential laser lens failure, etc. The advantage to the Polynega is that it is brand new hardware, region free, plays reproduction or burned discs, and also out of the box plays original PlayStation, Neo Geo CD, and Sega Saturn games. With the Sega CD the best version to buy is the model 2. Ask anyone who repairs or owns model 1 Sega CD’s and they’ll tell this “they’re unreliable.” Over the years they haven’t aged well. The CDX is great however they are at the higher end of value and therefore cost to buy. The Wondermega (Japan) and X’eye (USA) which were licensed JVC variants of the Mega CD and Sega CD are up there with the CDX due to their rarity. Definitely do some research and if you have questions feel free to respond to this. I love the Genesis and Sega CD, a subscriber and regular supporter of SLX, and a fan of videogaming. If you decide to go after any of these I mentioned to you good luck. Have a great day.

Side stories and remakes are nice and all, but that time and effort should have been spent making a full-on new Lunar at the beginning of the 32-bit era.

It was a rare example of a game that only used the CD for playing the soundtrack, but you didn't feel ripped off upon realizing it. The soundtrack was just THAT good, and made the CD version infinitely superior to the cartridge.

    I remember walking into blockbuster with my mom when I was 13 and picking up used copies of lunar silver star and dark wizard that they had for sale. I didn't know anything about them. I totally fell in love with lunar. It was pretty much my first jrpg. Dark wizard seemed to complicated to me at first but when I tried it the second time, I fell in love with it too. It's still my favorite strategy game.

    I must speak truly. I have many memories of playing Sonic CD for Win 95 mid 90's but I did not even understand the nature and purpose of the time travel. I am sure that what is seen from bonus or between zone levels is a Arrow pointing straight at what the makers of Jack Jazz Rabbit was trying to do within their own time frame. I was surpised to see what you made as you put it in the number one slot, but I too prefer platforms that do more than dash through from start to goal post as fast as possible. I LOVE what Sonic Team did with the Dynamics of game play nifty detail and colour palette splendour in Knuckles Chaotix and some times I play it for a short while and some times I head on to sit in front of it in longer takes. I like the idea that being fast is not what is most pivotal in game play in Chaotix, and I am thinking now having seen this video reminding me of features of the PC version I have played many times there seems to more great offerings layered within if I could get it for MEGA CD with the proper controllers. I have meories that the time travel mode was messy and that Emma and I tried to avoid it at times, as so put forth some of the story in how the game is in its' structure it seems that I NEVER understood what a pivotal part the time travel plays in fully realising the concept of the game and how it relies also on having patience, not just maximum velocity! thanks for sharing and I must say, so fully achieved something special in the notion of how you expressed that of which titles were your PERSONAL faves. Sonic CD standing there as the King of The Hill, now coming from you I was a tad surprised. I knew that you regarded highly the quality outing of Terminator and it was in fact a video in the first run of your show that got me interested in getting a MEGA CD MACHINE, yepp
