DIY Harry Potter Spellbook - Pocket Book of Spells

- In this tutorial we'll be making a DIY Harry Potter Spellbook which is 50 fully readable pages. This book of spells (The Practical Pocket Book of Spells) is different from my other DIYs because it's not a replica of anything that was in the Harry Potter books or movies. This is a product of my own imagination. The hands and wand motion illustrations are hand-drawn by me, I wrote the Forward, and also made up the character who wrote this book for Hogwarts (Dervis Macazlan). This took me quite some time to put together - so if you use it for any public work you'll need to definitely credit me by linking to this tutorial. Also, you may not use this for any commercial (for-profit) projects. See the usage rights file included with the free templates. With that out of the way, I hope you enjoy this tutorial as much as I enjoyed putting it together for you!

Also, for the people that do not have a long reach stapler, you can open up a regular stapler and use an eraser under the pages to set the staple. Then just pull the eraser off and close the staple tabs.

I know I already suggested this on instagram, but I'd really recommend you do a crowdfund for us to help you send your hard drive to a professional and maybe get it fixed (as long as there is any hope that they do get it fixed). The amount per donor would be rather small and if you see it that way, five dollars is a damn good price for all the stuff that you're providing us with! Also I think many people would like to help you get back all the files and the hard work you put in. And sorry for repeatedly suggesting that in case you already decided against doing it for some reason, I just wanted to say it again in case you just didn't read it.
I've actually been considering your crowdfunding suggestion. I've requested a quote from a local data recovery place so I'll know how much I need. Also, they don't charge unless they actually recover the data.

Sucks that you lost the original files. I know the feeling all too well. Happened a few times back in the day when I was in school for graphic design, such a freaken piss off. Learned my lesson big time and back everything up in a few different places.

So sorry to hear you lost your files. It has happened to me before, too. I even thought I had backups on CD, but they were unreadable. Everything lost. :( So frustrating. Now I backup to a few separate locations as often as I can (a separate storage HD, online, and also on USB drives while in middle of projects.) And, I also don't connect my work computer to the internet. I found it really slows it down over time. :/ I'm super paranoid now. Haha

i know this comment is late but as a college student and graphic design hobbyist it made me nauseous to think of all that hard work just being lost you poor thing :( I've def been there and it is no fun i hope they were able to recover some data because you make HP accessible to everyone no matter their wallet size so thank you!
So sorry you lost all your work. I just made this book and I love it so much. I know it would be a lot of work but I would love it if you could do another pocket book on defence against the dark arts with the unforgivable curses and all the creatures from the third book. You could also do dark plants in it like devil snare and maybe gillyweed?

Windows professional XP old version can scan and download and save as an editing version. See if you can do the same w newer versions but the older was so good they changed it. I used this program to download and edit my 200+ pgs of a policy and procedures for small business work, changes and update and editing. Great for writing a book like yours. The drawings should be saved as pdf also. Have a magical day Hope this can inspire a few more copies
Cloud storage is the best option to back up important data IMO. Google Drive, Dropbox etc. can automatically save and sync some of your local folders so you don't even have to upload everything manually one by one. Keeping a copy of your important files in the cloud not only a great backup option, it also lets you access (and modify) your files in different computers. It's like 5 minutes to set one up, they can be used for free (Goggle Drive has 15GB free storage) and it could be a lifesaver in situations like this.
I have Google drive and dropbox. The problem is, I had about 900 gigs of data on my drive, which is way more than either of those services allow.
On what paper did you print the library cards??
Can't you download the older files from your instructables page and edit them from there?

I can but those are the flattened files. I lost all of the editable files with photoshop layers and editable text...
He probably had the master files in psd format (the one used by Photoshop) and on the Instructables you can find pdf and jpg (save for the Ministry documents). Jpg is usually compressed and it doesn't have layers - if you check his video with making your own changes to the templates, you'll see how the original files look like.
I see, well, that kind of sucks. What about the Potions book, I thought you were collaborating with someone on that, do they have a copy of it?
She has some things that I emailed her, but not a lot. She has everything she's worked on though, so that's great! I lost the cover design though- and that took a while.
