  • Widescreen, multi-projector Cinerama technology allowed audiences to fully immerse themselves in panoramic views long before IMAX. A Calgary restorationist is part of a group working hard to digitize Cinerama films to preserve their place in cinematic history.

I was a 16 year old farm boy from western Nebraska when I got to see my first Cinerama movie at the Cooper Theater in Denver, CO. That movie was How the West Was Won. I managed to see it twice while it played there and I have never forgotten the experience to this day. It was so sad to see all three of Cooper's Cinerama theaters destroyed. The Denver Cooper became a Barnes & Noble bookstore and the Omaha Cooper a parking lot for the Methodist hospital, regardless of all the events to save it. So happy to see the passion and effort put into saving this wondrous part of movie history.

The "Grimm" smilebox disc is wonderful. Worth all the hard work everyone contributed to the restoration.
I'd love to see a deeper dive into how this gentleman (probably my age too) built his home Cinerama screen.
    Thanks!

Thank you Tom March for helping bring back what was once considered a lost film.

Cinerama has fascinated me for most of my 68 years. I have never seen a proper 3 strip Cinerama presentation. I only knew of it from reading and photographs. I was always a little sad that I missed the era. At least, the Blu-Ray of the restored How The West Was Won gave me a tantalizing sense of the format. The accompanying documentary about the Cinerama process is wonderful.

"Ben-Hur," which I saw at Theatre Tokyo, was a very memorable movie. Since it was a Cinerama screening, I was able to immerse myself in the movie. In the 1980s, the Cinerama Theater was almost gone, but now that we are here, there are signs that it may be possible to recreate it. It is digital, and it is a facility called "Sphere" that has appeared in Las Vegas. This can show a panorama, so you can easily show a cinerama. All have to do is build a low-cost facility that specializes in the screening of Cinerama films. I hope that it will be built at the Cinerama Theater currently in Hollywood, and that a new digital Cinerama Theater will emerge. And with the Apple Vision Pro, should be able to shoot easily. I would like to see a large number of Cinerama works made.

Know you've spent a lot of your dollars on Smile Box. They are an investment. I only have one and it was dearly priced. 💰

Saw a Cinerama presentation one time at the "Warner" in DC. Effects lasted a lifetime. Thanks to ALL!
