    It makes sense that D&D is popular among actors, it's basically just structured improvisational theater.

      @Corpsefoot Gaming There's not that much math in D&D, it' basic addition and subtraction mostly, if that's an issue, maybe I expect people to be a little smarter than they actually are

      Also among managers, CEOs etc. It plays well into the whole problem solving as a group, team work, interaction with others etc. It's a highly intelligent and welcoming game.

      @KhronicD Před 5 lety +2

      @Corpsefoot Gaming first of all no. Also, even in your example it's hardly an insumountable amou,t of math. It's often referred to as pen and paper gaming for a reason. Try writing things down.

    She seems so lovely and nerdy. It's nice to see that she is so down to earth and so natural. Fun to see her slightly star-struck by Jeremy Crawford. A twinge of sadness and empathy to hear that she didn't have many friends growing up and super glad that she's found the D&D community and lovely people to play with now.

    In the Navy when we were carrying Marines aboard ship to Iraq to actually go to war and really fight and kill people when During the travel I came across a group of marines spread out in the hallway playing D&D and they had their full gear on mostly with bulging biceps and their real guns set to the side. Yet here they were immersed in the fantasy of doing the same kinda things in D&D but so much more light hearted I'm sure. It was just kinda hilarious and surreal.

    • @Dracopol
      @Dracopol Před 5 lety +4

      In D&D, the only reason you were clearing monsters from underground dungeons and clearing the wilderness of more monsters and bandits was that the original Restraining Walls keeping outsiders out were never built. D&D was heavily inspired by Tolkien where they went to the Mines of Moria, the homeland of the Dwarves, invaded by the Orc race and worse, and totally decayed from its state in the past. A more strict immigration policy would have prevented it, and the fantasy races could keep their kingdoms. This resonated a lot with White Suburbia, a different sort of refugee...

    Deborah, I saw you DM at the “Stream of Many Eyes” and was blown away. I have never seen anyone else who runs the adaptive player-agency style with props. That’s my jam.
    I need to win the lottery, because I’d LOVE to sit at your table, and then DM a table for you after that. Brilliant. Bucket list for sure.

      @@Sheriff_K If you watch the video he's referring to (search her name along with D&D on CZcams and it'll probably come up), she DM'd a one-shot. She gave the players a lot of freedom to do what they wanted how they wanted without burying them in die rolls and used physical props along the way. I think that's what Mike was referring to with "player agency" and "props". I'm excited to see how she does next year with her own series that I assume will be a full campaign without the time limitation that the Stream of Many Eyes session had.

I've played and DMed since 1st edition AD&D, 2nd edition, 3.0, 3.5, up to Pathfinder, Warhammer (like you, the rpg, not the wargame), Star Wars (both the old West End D6-based system, and the D20 system), Call of Cthulhu (both the old Chaosium D100-based system, and the D20 system), Vampire the Masquerade and other World of Darkness stuff, some old Palladium games like RIFTS and Heroes Unlimited. I had a game group that fell apart several years ago and I got out of gaming, and just put it all away... I thought maybe I was just done with gaming.
      Watching Critical Role awakened the fire in me, and I finally got to join a new group and start playing again! It wouldn't have happened without Matt Mercer and co.

      Roy Sauce Jessica Jones would be a rogue using strenght instead of dexterity, with the medium armour master feat

      I think of J.J. as maybe an Inquisitive Rogue w/ some Valor Bard levels

    That's my story. Growing up I was also fascinated by D&D, but didn't have any friends. It wasn't until college, I met some really cool guys (and gals!) at work that played. That was over 30 years ago. I'm still friends with those people today, and now even my daughter plays D&D!

    I enjoyed watching her character in Dare Devil. I then stumble across this video and her cool factor goes threw the roof.

    I can't express how happy this makes me.
    I grew up hiding my D&D books from my parents, because this was the time when 60 minutes put out their "D&D is from the devil and leads to suicides" special. The bullying, the misconceptions, all the negativity that we lived with when we were younger has been washed away (for the most part, at least, not completely).
    But the overwhelming positivity of this D&D renaissance we find ourselves in, the influx of players looking for that story driven experience, the phenomenal fem-DMs like Deborah, Satine Pheonix, and more.
    It's all so great.

    I thought she was a newbie when I watched Force Gray, but man, what fun! I'm glad she continues to explore and participate. Very cool.
