I think it's important to note that this is for a single part of the industry. Whatever airline you fly for will have this covered by company policies, not FAA rules. If you want to fly for a large airline, you will of course be bound by those policies, but that's only one segment of the industry. Commuter airlines often adopt the codes of the majors that they feed, but small airlines, FBOs and rotary often have more relaxed policies. That represents a very large (if less obvious and well known) segment of the industry, perhaps even larger than the big airlines.
EDIT: just wanted to throw out a thanks for these vids - always interesting !
"People expect a stereotype of a pilot"
"Yeah I do. I expect to see a guy climbing into the cockpit with a red scarf, a leather hat, and a pair of goggles, and a big bushy moustache. I have been disappointed"
speed150mph actually God damn. That would be the 1 freaking time I'd be okay with it.
if my pilot isn’t snoopy in a leather hat i will be getting off immediately
Gyrocopter from Dota 2
If that man (or lady with a fake moustache, in which case *extra points* ) would be the captain I would practically _demand_ a selfie with as I'm leaving the aircraft.
loooooooooooooool
Im a pilot for delta and have a full sleeve tattoo. It's military related (spent 10 years in the Marine corps) but upon first glance you can't really tell. It goes down onto my hand so even with long sleeves, it's still noticeable. That being said, I've never had a problem. I covered them with makeup during my interviews but after that, I didn't cover it. I was nervous about it at first but nobody cares. It's also on my right hand and arm so the captain I'm flying with can't see it. And once I pick up cpt, I won't care if my 1st officer cares or not. Just my experience.
I work at UPS airlines and have a beard and 2 full sleeve tattoos all the way to the wrist. I too was in the Marines and also was a government contractor for 10 years. I jus wear long sleeves. Not because I have to but because I actually prefer the long sleeves.
@@williambaggett5665 what about neck tattoo
@@jeffersonvergara8064
No hand, face or neck tattoos allowed. If you covered it you may be ok.
Somehow, I was waiting all the time for him to show us his tattoo. Like, "here, this nice little plane here on my ankle is ok because it will be covered by my uniform" ;-)
+Petra44YT Hahaha! Nope, I am thinking of tattooing the names of my sons though.
I've been in the infantry for most of my adult life, and so I have my fair share of tattoos. Now that I am looking at going to school and becoming a pilot, I am thankful that you have addressed this topic.
Hello Mentour just wanted to let you know that your videos have gave me a lot of courage to become a pilot and I just got accepted to a pilot program so thanks so much! Keep them coming!
I would love to be flown by captain Blackbeard
Yeah! I think that would be awesome!
me too

There is a real yacht now called The Black Pearl.
"Yar, we'll be flyin' 35000 feet about those land-lubbers relyin' on their sails. We expect no chop from the air and, unless we're becalmed, the journey will be an hourrr. The serving wenches and cabin-boys will be around shortly for yer grog and to let you use the head. If'n there are any chop or air-typhoons we be lettin' ye know!"
On the issue of "looking the part", my favourite example is Bruce Dickinson :)
He seems totally another person when he's in the cockpit!
How could anyone possibly dislike this video? I simply don't understand how any of Mentour's vids have any dislikes.
Another great video as always, Mentour. I'd LOVE to discuss aviation over a beer in London, you are such a personable guy and from what I see, a truly knowledgeable professional. Stay safe!
Mentour Pilot That would be insane. I can only speak for myself but I really appreciate the time and effort you put into all of this for us all. Thank you!
At my easyJet interview they asked specifically if I had any 'visible' tattoos, I don't but I assumed that anything not covered by what I was wearing at the time would probably have gone against me!
Hi Mentour! Once again a very informative and purposeful video, I'd like to thank you first of all not just for this video, but for generally taking out your time to run and expand this channel all so that our queries and curiosities on how to get into the aviation industry and how to stay there, are answered, thank you for this I greatly appreciate it. The question I have is that which do you think is better, modular or integrated? As well as this why? And also I have seen that for Europe, there is the EASA what would it be for Asia (not that I live there I'm from the UK) just if I was to do my training there, which type of licenses would I acquire? Once again a huge thanks for providing these video podcast,s I thoroughly enjoy them and they also massively help me. Thank You. All the best!
Thanks for this very informative video podcast Mentour.
your a humble dude i salute and respect your grind sir
Thanks a lot, it was rather interesting information!:)
Nice video captain👮!! Much respect for pilots. Greetings from Nagaland, Northeast India
It would be funny to see ZZ Top in the cockpit flying the plane.
+mentour pilot here's some advice to those wanting to get into the airlines in the future. It's very simple. Don't get tattoos that will show up if you're wearing short sleeves. So basically you can get a tat if short sleeved shirt/pants will cover it. I have tattoos on both my forearms right now and I am having them lasered off and also covering them up with makeup during my application process as I need to prove to the airline that they can be concealed and not be seen by anyone whilst on the job. Mentour is right, tats will always have a negative connotation, even though not fair, no matter which airlines so better to have tats under your shirt only, or better, none at all if you want to get in.
Just wear long shirt uniform.
It’s not hard to wear long sleeves
@@g.3067 Maybe he prefers short sleeves, though. His choice.
grandmas and grandpas judging you? *YA GOT THAT RIGHT*
Yeah, "LightRealms"...Remember, Grandmas and grandpas were raised when there was such a thing as a standards of appearance.
@@donneary7104 If i walked on to an aircraft and the captain had a man bun and a pokemon tattoo I would be like....... nahh!
Beautiful tulips!
Hey! Could you possibly do a video on the jepessen airway manual and how to best use it for atpl tests (where to find certain things and good to know information that is "hiddden somewhere in there")? If not you maybe you could suggest it to one of your cadets! I think it could help a lot of students.
Before my retirement, I was an executive at a very large American corporation. I grew a nice trim beard. The lady from Human Resources called it a ‘CLM.’ A career-limiting move. So I shaved it off.
But then again, you were already an executive, no? :)
True! I was a Director, but I wanted to become a Vice President! The lady’s implication was that a promotion would never happen with a beard. So I played by the unwritten rules.
Dave Glo did you become a VP, though?
That was her experience at least...
Absolutely ridiculous! If it's a well kept beard that can often times make you look more professional than not, shows that you care about your appearance and put an effort in to keep a tidy beard which is harder than it sounds, in my opinion anyway.
Hi Mentour! What do you think about autonomousity in aviation? Will it arrive within our lifetimes? Will the jobs of pilots be replaced by software? Thanks for all the work! Fly safe!
Well, my uncle was given a homemade tattoo by my dad when my uncle was 14. Preacher’s kids 😂. The tattoo is just his name and a star (sorta) in blue ink on his forearm. And he has been a pilot since 1969. So, apparently they didn’t even care way back then, and he did wear short-sleeved uniform shirts.
Well explained, there is one definite exception to this general rule on beards however. Wyvern certified pilots must be clean shaven (for reliable oxygen mask operation if needed). So if you plan on flying any VIP's, world leaders etc.. then beards are out.
Nice video!
hey mentour pilot like always great video! :D I wounder maybe you can make video about flight simulation software like pmdg 737ngx. is it good idea to use it for learning procidures and cockpit flows? :D
Would you be able to do any other day as a airline pilot video?
It depends on the airline, period.
Thank you Mentour for another informative video.
hey mentour, thank you for helping us out with your videos. I got a question though, I'm bodybuilding, can this be a problem to get hired for an airline. I've never used any steroids but I do take supplements like mass gainers.
Thanks for the video. I've decided not to get "DEATH" tattooed on my forehead..until I retire.
I have a tattoo of a plane sticking out of the ground with people on fire running away from it on my forearm, is that going to be a problem?
@@mmtot
Depends, are the people running away following correct evacuation procedures?
Thanks for the video. I've decided not to get a compass tattoo on my neck.
Manav Chauhan Get it on your shoulder
Manav Chauhan dont get one at all...
The type also makes the difference my mate on this lower has the grim reaper which is not the best when your a paramedic so got a cover up tattoo.
Imagine that this your captain and the grim reaper is at the controls.
Kappa Wait y?
I really enjoy your videos except for one thing: the intro and outro cuts are too loud. When I am using headphones, I have to turn down the volume during these segments. It may just be my setup, but it does seem that these parts are much louder than the main part of the videos-uncomfortably so. Otherwise, your content is quite informative and enjoyable. Cheers, Russ
Hello Sir,
1)What is the future of airline industry in the next upcoming years ? Will there be more number of jobs or less.
2)If we want to do our training in USA then do we need to clear SAT exam for that .
Thanks captain
i really like your videos u are fantastic. i wish i could be a pilot o know so much on flying and all the other things but i dont think it will ever happen for me. plus i think i maybe to old now. im 32
In the States, I have never seen facial hair on an airline pilot aside from a mustache. I believe it has something to do with oxygen masks not being able to properly seal onto your face over a beard.
Thats a good idea, maybe...
its just being professional
@@ADuckOnQuack97 And that right there is why airline pilots in the US tend not to have beards - because the US tends to see beards as somehow unprofessional. Hence why it's been a really long time since y'all elected a bearded president, for instance.
@@ADuckOnQuack97 Professional my ass. Airlines need to get with the times. Nothing more manly than a well groomed beard
Even mustaches were somewhat controversial in the more conservative airlines but carried over from what was permitted in the USAAF (WW2)/USAF. In the 70s and 80s it was sideburns.
Hello, nice video. I'm about to attend the CPL and ATPL course, my only problem is that i have tattoo on my forearms that can be covered with a long sleeve shirt. But as I see pilot uniform is short sleeves. Do you think I will have problem if I want to get a job as Airline pilot or cargo pilot? Thank you.
Which country is the best to join flight school and start a career as pilot?
Can you cover the topic of jurisdiction of a aircraft in another country for example what laws does the pilot and his or her crew have to go by
Slightly unrelated question - do you get nervous in any way when you get to fly a brand new right from under the needle aircraft?
I used to have a beard some time ago.
I have two small hoop earrings in my left ear. And I'm long haired. Is that over the top?
As a firefighter Captain no beards due to the need for a good seal on SBA but tattoos were ok. As a ship Captain no visible tattoos or piercings, beards especially on us gray haired types preferred, lol Great advice to young folks thinking of tattoos not easily hidden, especially on face, neck and hands. Same for large piercings that leave visible holes when removed, especially earlobes, cheeks, etc. They can cause real employment problems even for minimum wage jobs. Same is true for the ladies, Tats and piercing are not appreciated as body art in the business world if you work with the public.
hi mentour pilot.. I want to become a commercial pilot. which is the best aviation academy for my future? which will open more job opportunity for me in best airlines??? please give me guidance..
I understand what the man in the video is saying about people being split second judgemental on appearance and that it may not be fair or correct, but that it's just the way some people are with their trusting instincts. The thing I'm also smart enough to understand is that the way someone looks is abstract from job performance. Believe me, this is a very true statement. For instance, just last night I was watching a television show called "Why Planes Crash" and several of the crashes that killed many people were due to bad pilot decision making. And would you know these pilots that made some fatal decisions were clean shaven men. Like I was saying, job performance has absolutely nothing to do with someone's looks. I choose to have a beard, and I out perform people at my place of employment everyday I work. I totally understand that people need to shower before they come to work, and neatly groom themselves before as well. And that if there are rules on length of hair or beard at some places of employment, that rule should be followed. But, I think each individual should be entitled to the way and style they want to appear. I truly believe in this. Just look at some professional athletes, some of them with very long hair and beards, and they have out performed their peers in competition through high school, college etc..... You really have to separate job performance from appearance, very important. That's the way I see it.
I don't know if anything changed but in Russia berds were not allowed for a long time. But for different reason - most rules in Aeroflot are military derived, and there they banned beards because they would interfere with gas-mask in case if one is needed.
I have a tattoo on my arm, but its small and represents my birthday. Would that be okay? I don't plan on working for a big airlines but I would like to be a pilot for a king air of Qwest kodiak, etc.
I have a small tattoo on my forearm like before my wrist .. its just a small sentence of 4 words .. is this a problem? And another question: if i took the tattoo off by laser it wouldn't be a problem anymore or what?
hello sir i just want to ask you like which school do you recomend a flight school other that oxford to do easa traning and is easa better then faa at finding work ?
I think regarding a certain fashion of beard or for example long hair, thinking of a fried of mine who is a volunteer firefighter I think there are also some practiocal "limitations" to be taken into consideration.
For long hair it is less an issue, but you might get your hair messed up and entangled in your headset. I always wonder how some female pilots with long hair manage that.
For beards I know from my friend that they cannot have beards as voluntary firefighters, if they are trained and certified to use and work with a respiratory system. I do not know how much that matters, but I bet having a long, ever so nicely groomed and well looking beard, I guess there are limitations regarding getting a good enough seal with your oxigen mask in an emergency.
Hi, right arm full sleeve plus both hands tattoed. Good looking guy, groomed, clean, tidy. Starting soon my atpl integrated but this along other videos concerning tattoos and pilot career are giving me lots of doubts.. What you think? I mean I'm in the path of spending 80.000€ for my future i don't want to be blown out by companies about my tattoos..what i do?
Trust the pilot and ELAC, SEC and FAC (and of course FMGS!)
Hi, I aspire to become a pilot and I'm planning on starting flight school in about a year. Currently I'm researching different airlines. However I'm becoming a little nervous, I have a small tattoo on my right hand middle finger. It's about 2cm long and 0.5cm high. Most people I meet don't realise I have a tattoo until I tell them. I've seen a lot of airlines say that you can't have any visible tattoos. In your experience do you think this will be a problem for me?
Witch airline are you working for?
This is great to know because I want to get a tattoo in memory of my great grandfather who was a S/O for United Airlines and inspired me to fy
So, if i have a small tattoo 1cm x 1cm on my wrist, would that avoid me of getting in an airlines? or become cargo pilot? If yes, and i decided to remove it, there will be scars in its place, would that also avoid to get the pilot vacancy ?
Hi!! by the way how pilots handle stress and how they cope it?
“CaptaiN BlackbearD” I actually spit out my drink 😂
Aye matie, buckle up, were in for a grand ride.
can I still become a pilot with a scar on my right hand? it can still be concealed with a long sleeve but I'm just not sure what Airlines take on such a situation so somebody plz advice..
When I used to work in the airlines, I worked both mainline and regional jets. As we all know, most new...aka young...pilots end up in regional airliner cockpits. I cannot count how many times I heard "That kid is our pilot?!" However, never did anyone get off. I would tell some that were close that there is no way the airline would allow him fly their multi million dollar jet if he wasn't qualified and I wouldn't have a problem flying today if they wanted to trade me their seat and they take my place on the ramp. (LOL) That typically calmed any objections.
HOWEVER...one time, we had this, well I won't call him a man because his behavior didn't line up with what a man is. He saw the Captain, a very capable woman that flew into our airport regularly. This "person" looked into the cockpit and very loudly complained, "We have a female captain?" and he turned toward the door. I stopped him just off the plane on the jet way and asked him what was the problem. He went off on a ti-raid with very disparaging comments about the female sex and what he felt was all they were good for.
The Captain came out of the flight deck, looked at me and said, "Do not let this man board my plane. I will not allow him to fly with us today." I told him that he needed to return to the gate counter with me. The captain then stopped at the gate and told the gate agent this man was to be removed from her flight because of his neanderthal mindset of women are good for.
And then, much to my shock, she picked up the gate mic and proceeded to announce to the entire group gathered that she was the captain of the flight and this, and she used the word neanderthal, objected to flying on a flight commanded by a woman. She then encouraged anyone else with this mental concept of females to please join him on a later flight. All others with a more reasonable mindset toward women were more than welcome to join her on-board when the gate cleared them to board. Then she added we have an open seat if anyone in the gate area was hoping to catch an earlier flight, she would personally take them on-board and show them their seat. The gasps, the laughing and then applause of the rest of the pax was priceless.
While not exactly professional in response, I personally loved the way she put this neanderthal in his place.
Bravo!!
Thats ban this pax from EVER flying again" level of uncivilised...
I've been a traindriver for most of my life. There it was the same. Facial hair no problem if wel maintained. Tatoos no problem as long as they are not visible.
What do you think of the Boeing 737 super 8?
I'm currently training to become a commercial pilot (ATPL LEVEL) and I have the bridge of my nose pierced. can I keep this piercing when I'm an Official pilot?
Hi Mentour. Do you know if male commercial pilots are allowed to have long hair? Not like messy surf hair but clean hair which is combed away from one's face. Have you ever seen long haired male commercial pilots?
not really, usually short well kept hair
I got my commercial license with shoulder length hair that was tied back. Had plenty of job offers as well, but that was flying charter. I imagine its different with airlines.
Hi Mentour, can an FAA certified private pilot rent a plane and fly in Spain?
I've got and eye tattooed on my forehead, I really hope that won't be an issue with my career in flying industry
I have a burn mark on my hand is that okay?
I heard that facial hairs have restrictions due to wearing the oxygen masks-for as long as it doesn’t interfere with using it
Looking the part definitely makes sense. I wouldn't take my car to an auto mechanic wearing a business suit, for example.
Does the seal around oxygen mask not present a problem with having a beard?
Irishandtired not really the mask work by using positive pressure (pumping in air) so a tight seal is not necessary but help full. Remember the mask used in aircraft are bulit to used by the general public who may or may not have breads, and the mask only needs to work long enough for the plane to descended to a lower altitude where the air is thick enough to breath.
It’s a bunch of BS I had a beard in the army I got a waiver for it my gas mask fit just fine
i have a tattoo on my forearm is that a problem??
How about dread locks? Can they have that hair style.
Same rule about tattoos in the Metropolitan Police in London. When (often) ex-military people join with forearm tattoos they have to wear a long sleeved shirt.. Differs in other police forces but generally the rule is no visible tattoos.
how about long hair headhair is it allow ???
great video can the co pilot taxi the aircraft
Potentional question: Would you need and/or benefit from a normal driver's license as an airline pilot? I still need to (or need not to) get mine... :-)
helgefly56 it's mandatory
helgefly56 when you interview with the airlines, they not only examine your flight record but your driving record as well. whatever you do, do not get a DUI.
deal breaker
Hi mentour can a pilot have long hair? not to long but down to his shoulders
hello mentour. question: can a person become a pilot with asthma?
I have a class one and i have mild asthma, i did pass the lung function test. Think its fine if its not severe. But im not a AME just passing on my experience
How old are you mate?
Hi mentour, have you ever thought about attending any of the pilot careers live events?
Mentour Pilot oh thank you for the quick reply! I attend the Heathrow event every year and I think that you could be a great speaker there, especially because of the presence you have on CZcams. It would also be a great way to meet some of your fans!
Hello Mentour! how do airlines feel about handlebar mustaches? done neatly with wax and the sort?
We think they are great!
Mentour Pilot Wow that's good to hear! I'm currently a barber and I grew out my handlebar mustache to look the part! Now I love it and although I am willing to part ways with it to fulfill my dream I am happy to hear that a little style is accepted on the flight deck!
What is the speed of the plane on the landing time
Depends on the plane type, wind direction & speed, air density, weight etc..
Average landing speed for planes like the A320 or Boeing 737 would be around 130-140 knots in full landing configuration.
Can an airplane be automized to be run without Pilot(Pilotless Cockpit)? I mean what if, advancement in technology, made the pilots redundant? It happened in various other sectors, what about in aviation?
Vinayak Sinha Not even u will fly in that plane then,we can not trust computers unless it's monitored by a human
They have not yet perfected driverless cars and trucks. The technology is not yet mature enough for aircraft.
it might be an issue with flight attendants if they have to reach out to the overhead compartment to close it.
Just saying , if the pilot flying would look like blackbeard, I would totally be fine with that.
Plus you'd get to say captain blackbeard was my pilot :DDD
Sorry for asking this but can male pilots have long hair?
What about long hair tied on a ponytail?
Why can't I download the app? It says the app isn't compatible with my device????

Is it ok for a pilot to be black, or muslim?

What about piercing can you have them.
I'm interested in how beards influence the use of oxygen masks should they be required.
What about piercings?
Dozie Ihejirika oh god yeah my face piercing
how about long hair?
can a pilot have a long hair???
Captain I have a silly question.... I want to become a commercial pilot but a friend of mine told me that she was not hired to be a flight attendant because she a had a scar. I had a few scars on my arms because I had 2 lipomas removed. They’re small scars about an inch long. I guess the question is; Will having scars kill my dream to be a commercial pilot?
+Nelson Lopez Hi! No, that will not have any kind of impact at all.
Does hight matter ???
What about weight. Would an overweight person be allowed to be an airline pilot? Is being overweight a sign of no self control and then not the right personality for a pilot?
So even if we get sleeve tattoo we can just wear long shirt that would just cover it ?
Just don't do it!
