      Song about the class enemy
When I was little, I went to school
and I learned, what was mine and what yours.
And when everything was learned there,
it didn't seem to be all complete to me.
Because I didn't have a breakfast to eat
      and others had one:
And so, I still learnt everything
about the character of the class enemy.
And I learned, why and for what reason
there is a split through the world.
And it remains between us, because the rain
      falls from up to down.
And they told me: If I behave well,
then I will become the same as them.
But I thought: If I am their sheep,
then I will never become a butcher.
And I saw some of us,
      who fell for their lies.
And when to him happened what happened to you and me,
      then he was surprised.
But me, it didn't suprise me,
I early found out about their ways:
      Rain just flows down,
      and does not flow upwards.
In 1914, I heard the drums beat,
      and everyone talked about it:
We would have to wage wars now
over our place in the sun1.
      And hoarse voices promised us
      the moon2.
      And gluttonous high-ups
      shouted: Don't give up now!
And we believed: Only a few hours now,
and then we will have this and that.
But the rain flowed downwards again,
and we ate grass for 4 years3.
And then, suddenly the saying was:
      Now we start a republic!
And every person will be equal to the other
no matter if he is thin or fat.
And those who were weakened by hunger,
were full of hope as never before.
But those who were full from eating
      were as hopeful as them.
And I said: There must be something wrong with it
and was full of bleak doubts:
It can't be true, if the rain
      is supposed to flow upwards.
      They gave us ballots
      and we surrendered our guns.
      They gave us a promise,
and we gave them our rifle.
And we heard: Those who have the knowledge
      would help us now.
We should go back to work,
      they would do everything else.
      Again I was persuaded
      and kept quiet, as demanded
and thought: That is nice of the rain,
that it wants to flow upwards.
And soon after that, I heard them say,
that now everything already is sorted out.
If we'd accept the lesser evil
We'd be spared of the major one.
And we swallowed4 the priest Brüning,
so that it wouldn't be Papen.
And we swallowed the donzel5 Papen,
because otherwise it would be Schleicher's turn.
And the priest gave it6 to the donzel,
the donzel gave it to the general.
      And the rain flowed downward,
      and it flowed tremendously.
While we were running with ballot papers,
      they closed the factories down.
When we slept in front of employment offices,
they had us off their backs.
      We heard phrases like these:
      Keep calm! Just wait!
      After a real bad crisis
there will be a bigger boom!
      And I told my colleagues:
      So speaks the class enemy!
When he talks about "good times",
he means his own good times.
      The rain cannot go upwards,
because it suddenly means well with us.
What it can do, is to stop,
      then, when the sun shines.
One day, I saw them march,
      following new flags.
And many of our kinsmen said:
There is no longer a class enemy.7
Then I saw in their front lines
      Mugs8 I had seen before
      And I heard voices scream
in the old Staff Sergeant's tone
And quietly, through the flags and celebrations
flowed the rain, night and day.
      And everyone could feel it,
who was out of a home and a job.
      They zealously practiced shooting
and loudly talked about an enemy
and frantically pointed over the border
but who they meant was us.
Because we are enemies with them
in a war, that only one can win.
Because they live off us and perish
if we're no longer their slaves
      And this is also why
      you must not be surprised
if they throw themselves at us, like the rain
      throws itself at the ground.
And those of us who used to starve to death,
      now fell in a battle.
And those of us who used to die,
      now were killed.
Whom they got with their soldiers,
is who didn't like to hunger.
      Whose jaws they kicked in,
      had asked for bread.
      Whom they had promised bread,
      they are hunting now.
And who they bring in a zinc coffin,
      had told the truth.
      And who has believed them,
      that they are his friends,
      he then simply expected,
that the rain would flow upwards.
      Because we are class enemies,
regardless of whatever they tell us:
Who of ours didn't dare to fight,
      has dared to starve.
      We are class enemies, drummer9!
Your drumming will not cover that up!
Factory owner, general, and junker -
      you are our enemy!
Nothing of this can be deferred,
nothing can be sorted out here!
The rain will not flow upwards,
      and let that be so!
Your painter10 can paint as much as he wants,
he will not paint over the split!
One remains, and the other must give way,
      either me or you.
And whatever I will yet learn,
      this remains the multiplication table11:
I will not ever have anything in common
with the cause of the class enemy.
There will not be found a word,
that would ever unite us both!
The rain flows from up to down.
And class enemy stays class enemy!
i copied it from a website so dont get confused with the random numbers and also the original is a bit linger than in the video here
