Spoilers Up Until Egghead!
Kuzan has always been a mysterious character, but recently, he's seemingly been all over the place. So I re read all of his scenes, and pieced things together to form a theory I believe is true. Blackbeard, Shanks, The Revolutionary Army? Which side is he truly on? We'll just have to wait and see as with anything in One Piece

I feel like garps line of “only weaklings lose their way” is what he’s told himself his whole life and is why he’s still a marine. It’s definitely his pride getting in the way but to me it’s at least an interesting look into his thought process
For sure, he's a really complex character, and I hope he can find a more nuanced view in the future, as he has when viewing his grandkids
Garp is on the whole a fake person, and not in a bad way. He is the hero of the marines and needs to uphold the standard for the rest of them at all times, projecting absolute justice and unwavering strength. Saying that line is what he needs to say, to inspire other marines and to show them that he will never stop fighting for their cause. But we know why Garp joined, to defend the defenseless, not to destroy every pirate because he can. He is much more soft and loving and against all tyranny (including his own organization’s) than he appears, and I think if he was ordered to take out a village/group of complete innocents to protect government secrets, he would abandon his post and take his personal brand of justice elsewhere.
alternatively, Aokiji is still transitioning from his old way to his new one, or rather he's still figuring out what exactly is his new way is

Revolutionary Army might be the best situation for Aokiji, he could still be free and work behind the scenes, and while he would still have superiors, he would be fighting for a greater world.
I wouldve predicted that he would have joined the Rev but that's why I dont write the story

I've always been of the opinion that the Marines don't want to be handing out Haki training to just anyone. That's dangerous. If Haki was standard training for all Marines, you aren't making an unbeatable army, you're making a threat to your own organization.
Also that explains why Garp was training luffy, ace, koby, etc differently and not enlisting them in the marines directly…
Plus people forget that haki is incredibly uncommon outside the new world, to the point that even strong people dont know it

This theory made me realize that Aokiji and Dragon has more in common when it comes to the marins. So Aokiji and Dragon working together would be ideal although im not too sure if Dragon hold any emotional ties to his father unless the altercation with Aokiji and Garb was premeditated. Great theory btw

In defense of Garp Kuzan didn’t just leave the marines he joined one of if not the most sinister group of pirates Garp has seen what black beards about black beard is one of the biggest reasons he couldn’t keep his promise to roger to protect ace so while garp is loyal to the marines which can get annoying him saying kuzan lost his way from where garp is looking makes a lot of sense
Working under the celestial dragons being apart of a system you dont agree with under a man who has the justice system you sworn to never be like
Vs aokiji living life on his own terms and finally having a choice in his actions not working under people like the goresei or akainu and most of all freedom.
Garp saying all he said about kuzans piracy while being ignorant of the fact that he works for the most disturbing organization in the show shows his blind justice towards anyone who isnt a marine
Akainu is the same person who destroyed a ship with innocent civillians kids and women because he didnt want robin to get away

“only weaklings lose their way” can be interpreted in many ways, but to me its like garp teaching not only coby back then but also kuzan, garp understood that kuzan conviction is lacking, the proof is he does not go all out against him from the get go, if you wanna be a villain be a villain through and through, if you wanna be a hero be a hero through and through, do not pick and choose base on your feelings when you want to save people or not. P/s garp spend the most with kuzan and he knows he is not the type of guy who would stoop low to blindly follow blackbeard, he understand he has some sort of bigger plan but to do that you have to commit as a blackbeard pirate.

Kuzan's connection to the Monke family is kinda crazy. Garp was he sensei in a way, trained his as a near perfect marine. Luffy has shown him through various interactions that Pirates can be good people, and his own goals align almost perfectly with Dragons. I want more than anything for Kuzan to work for the RA, it just makes sense
I've always picked up "good guy vibes" from Aokiji since he let Robin go. He's just lost. I wouldn't be surprised if he actually ends up being the final straw hat tbh
Hadn’t considered that but if the straw hats do pick up another member they don’t have a logia and it should be a well established and powerful character. Aokiji meets both of those requirements

Neither smoker, nor Aokiji will join, it makes sense for them to side with luffy but not join him. Same goes for Koby, to say other wise is a dis service to his character. We certainly will get 1 more straw hat because in the very first episode luffy said a crew of “10”, I believe this last person maybe from a place where vegapunk is or maybe vegapunk himself. But who knows.
Enjoyed this immensely, I remember seeing him save Smoker from Doffy, and that was when he got interesting to me. Smoker is my favorite Marine by far, I feel like he will end up defecting. I think that the Marines are going to go into a split-- not sure exactly why it feels that way but it does.
The “only weaklings lose their way” comment is the perfect thing for Garp say to Kuzan. At this point, I think it would be fair to assume that they haven’t seen each other since Kuzan’s punk hazard fight. After that fight not only does Kuzan leave the marines, but only a short time later does he joins with one of the most despicable pirates of the current era. To everyone observing from afar, it would look like he completely abandoned his old morality and sense of right and wrong because he lost the fight. Of course us as the readers have better insight into the reasons why Kuzan has made the choices he’s made. Butt outside of the 10 titanic commanders and Blackbeard, no one else does. It would be a very reasonable assumption for Garp to conclude that his protégé has completely abandoned the person that he was and lost his way.
garp is a complex character to see all his family and disciple going against what he wanted them to be.
We will see on Elbaf. Saul and Aokiji might have some interesting back story like Kuma and Bonnie being like Saul to Robin.
I hope he isn't a Marine double agent. If only because that feels a bit cliche. It makes sense that he would have turned on the world government, but the question is why go to Blackbeard instead of either the Revolutionary Army of the Straw Hats? My theory is that he wants Blackbeard to be pirate king because he knows that's the worst outcome for the government. I'm sure he believes in the strength of the Straw Hats enough to know that Luffy could make it all the way to Raftel. But imo he doesn't think Luffy has the ruthlessness to use the position of pirate king to cause havoc for the WG the way Blackbeard could.
Another reason could be because he is trying to protect Luffy from Blackbeard, kinda like how Itachi was protecting the hidden leaf from the Akatsuki for Garp's sake. The world government's aim is predictable and Garp being there gives a sense of relief. Blackbeard, on the other hand, is unpredictable and Luffy 's adversary. By joining the crew he knows exactly what is happening and where things are headed.
I think BB is trying to make a change in his own way, but aokiji in a different way, they just both want change but in opposing ways....idk
I think Garp’s line is both probably what he tells himself to cope about kuzan but also because he joined Blackbeard,one of the epitome’s of how bad pirates are. If he joined like the straw hats or red haired pirates he maybe wouldn’t be so upset
I think Garp did treat Kuzan as his son (as Dragon left for Revolution business). This old man has been watching Kuzan grow up from a silly teens to one of the strong Admirals. How heartbroken the old man was to see Kuzan still unable to find his own way in this world (similar to young Robin, but Kuzan is in his middle age now).
The sheer amount of connections in Kuzan's story is riveting in and of itself. Love this vid. Good stuff!
I would love to see a "What's up with Akainu?" video because it will be a good follow up as he is a crucial point to Aokiji's characterization and I'm just impressed about ur take on Kuzan's character.

it is very nice to hear someone who actually thought about why akoji joined black beard. it was annoying how most people couldn't even comprehend it when the answer has been there from early on.
also yeah Garp being 100% in favor of marine support can be annoying. i like to imagine when he says Marine, he isn't including the World Government side of things (gorosei,celestial dragons,CIpher Poll ect)
since to be fair the majority of pirates are in fact evil. ad the marines do help deal with them.

Your assessment of what Garp said is probably wrong. Garp doesnt comsider Kuzan weak. He saw that Kuzan was confused about his decision and that was Garp's way of saying that if Kuzan has made up his mind then he ought to sticl with that he thinks is right.
1:12 there actually *are* a couple of vice admirals who were considered for the two openings that eventually went to Fujitora and Ryokugyu. Their code-names are Momousagi and Chaton.
I have a feeling they don't want all marines to be proficient in haki because they don't want an overwhelmingly strong amount of soldiers in case they decide to revolt.

I'll give Garp some slack. I think he truly believes that the Marines are a force of good in the world. He has mostly known the atrocities of the World Government ever since he became vice-admiral decades ago as far back as God Valley. The most surprising thing really is how Garp himself has never left and became a pirate or a bounty hunter. We should remember many people joining the Marine are idealistic like Koby who believes in protecting the weak and defenseless. Garp was most probably the same way. However, unlike many of his contemporaries, he hasn't seem to have lost his ideals hence his decades long refusal to be promoted to Admiral. I think that's is why Garp was disappointed with Kuzan, he gave up
This comment gets it. Just to add to it, Kuzan was Garp's protege. Him being disappointed in Kuzan's decision really makes sense in this case. Do fact that Kuzan looked as if he was holding back against Garp further proves Kuzan's resolve isn't fully there yet.
Always have love for Aokiji. As many ways you can go with it why he joined the blackbeard pirates, he's one of the best written manga characters of all time, both for his kindness, and the vast mystery that still surrounds him. I feel like he's using whatever vehicle he can to carry out his personal values as they grow with everything else that makes him up as a person. I'm excited to see the next episode of his story.
12:40 I think the point Garp was trying to make is that he join back and become a member of sword. My assumption is “altough you couldn’t achieve what you wanted in the marines, sword is the organization that will fight against the world government and create a better system” this is what I think garp was trying to say(without mentioning sword) but I could be wrong

Dragon left the Marines because he saw no justice there. Maybe Kuzan realized the same thing. Maybe he'll end up a member of the revolutionary army. I can't see him being loyal to Blackbeard.

I think the idea of Shanks and Kuzan helping eachother is a cool theory although I do believe it makes more sense for Kuzan to be undercover/ relaying things to Dragon and the revolutionaries. Kuzan being apart of the marines and being a former admiral shows he obviously wants what is right but doesn’t believe in absolute justice like Sakazuki does, I felt it always made sense for him to be more attached with the revolutionaries then the marines especially after the incident at Ohara. I also think it’ll be a cool moment to see where Kuzan truly has his loyalty to since even when we saw him as an admiral, he seemed to act distant/different to what we’ve seen marines act prior (and even after) so him being apart of something more fitting to him will be awesome unless he truly is just by himself which I also think is interesting for his character. I don't think "only weaklings lose their way" is disparaging Aokiji specifically because of leaving the Marines. Garp has had his own doubts within the system and despises the corruption backing it - he knows being a marine is no objective good. I think this is actually a way of reaching out to Aokiji. After all, that is a beloved student, he should know Kuzan well. Accurate or not, I believe this is Garp calling out Aokiji because he believes Aokiji doesn't know what to do with his life at the moment. Aokiji is lost, and while exploring and desperately searching for a way to work towards his goals he found himself aligned with an objectively evil force (Blackbeard.)
I think his comment has layers, though only so much can be communicated in a fight. Without them getting to properly talk to each other it's not totally clear what the intention is. If we wanted to put it in the simplest way possible, I think Aokiji "losing his way" in Garp's eyes is not leaving the Marines, it's joining the Blackbeard crew

They say in the manga Haki is developed naturally and can't be taught. Once you have it they can help you develop it but you have to have gained it first by yourself.

I have kinda low expectations for One Piece videos generally but this was great. One of the only people I've seen who actually take Aokiji joining Blackbeard seriously and not snapping to the kneejerk assumption of a 4d chess move as an undercover double agent. I've always maintained that he's massively more interesting if he really means it, his sense of morality has been so numbed by Marine copium, the lies he's told himself to continue upholding this idea of the marines as a just organization, that he can look past the evils of an organization like Blackbeard's if he sees a greater good in it. It goes to show how the Marines perversion of justice is even more damaging than it initially seems.
However, I think you're kinda choosing not to see some nuance with Garp here for a similar reason- anyone who has been in the marines a long time, internalized their values, and stuck with them is by necessity not a distinctly moral person. They've had it sanded away by the cognitive dissonance of being a Marine, more and more the more power they get. Garp is one of my favorite examples of a character who is extremely morally checkered, and you're not 'missing something' for noticing that, it's good writing. He doesn't have to be a perfect hero, he's an abusive parent, he upholds the celestial dragons and their institutions of murder and slavery, he confronts all his problems with authoritative violence, including his personal ones, honestly I think the more we see of him the more I'm coming to the conclusion that he's basically a violent, authoritarian shitbag with some good in him. Honestly, I would fucking hate this guy in real life, he's a stubborn, violent cop. The fact that One Piece allows this level of muddiness with it's characters, where different people can view them totally differently, is one of my absolute favorite things about it.

Lol I mean garps loyalty is his whole character you can’t be mad about it now. He is the same as luffy no matter what happens he follows his dream, no matter how much it hurts. That’s why he didn’t stop Akainu from killing ace, it’s why he wanted luffy to be a marine, it’s why he wanted ace to be a marine, and I’m sure it’s why Dragon was a marine. His character is stubborn, stubbornness is the trait we see in all members of the monkey family and yeah sometimes it gets tiring, or makes us angry but I like that it doesn’t change, that’s who they are

I mean, to counter youd point in the beginning, A) all vice admirals and aboveare required to know haki and weve seen captains like Smoker and Koby who know haki B) There are in fact two vice admirals who were contenders for the position of Admiral but Sakazuki requested Fujitora specifically (iirc)
Interesting, where was that shown cause I don't remember that in the manga, and also, is it stated that Vice admirals are required to know Haki? If not the cases for Smoker and Koby seem like exceptions since they're well connected with people who could teach them
This is Oda setting up a battle between Sanji and Aokiji once Luffy faces Blackbeard.
Oda purposely has focused a lot more on his Mentor Relationship with Garp and how he lost his ideals.
Meanwhile, Sanji has stuck to his ideals that Zeff taught him all the way.
Its going to be a battle of ideals and never give up on those ideals.
Aokiji failed where Sanji succeeded.
Would be a fun fight, but the Ideals that Sanji stuck to were "feed those who are hungry and fight for your friends" while Aokiji's were "kill children" so

Aokiji is basically Dragon, but his belief in Garp was so great that he decided to stick with the Marines.
But slowly but surely he grew disolutioned about it.
While Sanji is a man that will die for his ideals and Luffy has proven himself that he needs him to achieve his goal. Its mutual belief. And that is why Sanji is one of Luffy's Wings, while Aokiji failed. We see why Garp only has Bogard around him, Aokiji was the other Wing but this Wing never fully believed.
The same kinda applies to Dragon and his 2 Wings, Ivankov and Kuma. Kuma was just too kind, he sacrificed his Wings for others, but this prevented Dragon from reaching his Goal.
The Gorosei choosing Akainu over him was the boiling point, it made him give up. Aokiji was also a man that was deeply affected by Ohara just like Dragon, and it shows me his belief in Garp was the only reason he didn't quit the Marines.
He realized the world is corrupt and he can't change it. But most importantly, he lost faith in Garp.
This is going to be the main cause of conflict.
Because Aokiji will clearly try to make Sanji give up. I mean even Post-Wano. He still has some doubts about his awakened powers. And i am sure after Egghead and seeing how easily Saturn rekt him. Will make him have doubts that he can match Zoro and allow Luffy to become Pirate King
They entire opposites, even their abilities are opposite, one is Ice the other is Fire. which is why they will make an amazing fight.
Just imagine the post battle. Aokiji laying defeated, while Sanji lights a cigarrette.
"Hey Black Leg, do you think is too late to believe?"
"I dunno man. But i believe Luffy will defeat your Captain and he will become Pirate King."
"I wish i had that level of conviction...I'm sorry Garp-san"
Considering the scenario will also likely be Laugh Tale, then its going to be powerful. A clash of ideologies.
I somehow feel that Akainu and Kuzan are both in this together. Akainu must have seen how strong and dangerous Blackbeard was and how much more of a danger he could become during and after the Marineford war. In true Sakazuki style he may have devised a plan with Kuzan to infiltrate and bring down Blackbeard from inside, just as he tried doing it to Whitebeard by turning Squard against him. Also in the current unstable world Akainu very well knows that Luffy would jump at the first opportunity to fight Blackbeard! This would also mean that there would be an all out battle between the yonkos which would eventually reduce their influence and bring all their territories under the control of Navy. Just a speculation, I don't think Kuzan would join Blackbeard without any specific goals.

Its basically either haki is a thing that is new Relatively only 400 years old
Or its A Hidden thing by the Wg
There are no books
vice admirals don't even know about it
But 100 years ago its was found/leaked/rediscovered/shared
And the wg had no way to combat these pirates who had became strong with their will
(Armament and observation are apects of will conquers haki is Will itself)
Cp9 the second strongest order the wg has did even know about haki
Instead they trained their agents physically
Because that's all they needed really
100 users of the 6 powers could take down a ton of countries
But "haki alone conquers all"-kaido
The wg needed a fighting force
So the marines where created
But under heavy restrictions only admirals will even know about or be trained with haki
The fleet admiral answers to Kong
A wg agent former fleet admiral
So there is clearly a distinction between marines and wg
Its been stated the marines and tge 3 admirals are the strongest forces the Wg has
So there is no hidden force stronger than the admirals wich is why i believe The godsknights are not that strong
Maybe 2 of them are close to admiral lvl
But thats it
Anyway the wg needed the marines to fight these haki users BUT did not want to help spread the knowledge of haki to control the masses
If a marine enlisted spent 4 years learned haki learned how to fight tactics etc. leaves and teaches an island and makes a pirate crew with a hundred people that's a strong ass pirate crew not yonko lvl
But admiral lvl for sure
After all Lizaru has sentomaru lvl haki
I think they wg "cleanses"
People to keep conquers from being born
So i estimated there are only 100,000,000 million people in the entire world of one piece
To keep the number of conquers around 100
Boa stated its a 1 in a million chance of being born
Like its a rare thing
If the one piece world had 7 billion people there would be 7000 people that COULD have been born with conquers haki

You would be pretty much unstoppable
And this is what shanks and roger has done
Roger had 4 conquers on His crew
Shanks has 2 maybe even 3
But himself and Ben beckman are conquers
Wb had 1 young one in ace
Kaido had only yamato but she was an enemy
(If you want to count doflamingo as part of kaido's crew than kaido had 1 weak conquer)
So the wg limits haki knowledge and limits the world population
Of course these 100 conquers could be baby's could be old people
Or could be a random citizen living his/her life never knowing he/she had power that could potentially change their destiny
And thats what the wg want
Haki seems like its always been there but i think its knew and the marines are new
The wg has never faced a foe like this (conquers)
So they needed to make a fighting force
And we know 800 years ago it was a modern times
The op world is an apocalypse kinda of world
And vegapunk told us this

The thing with Godknights is that they are the bottom layer of secret group.CP9 and even CP0 are accountable to top dogs , so knowing about them might be a reason why Dragon is feared. He knows the vastness of their assets. I mean 3Admiral(+fleet) +5*=8 really tough guys. But having let's say 5-7 or even 9 based on the Shadows to a similar scale or 1rst Commander level at worse is different.There are too many.

Its solely reliant on what you are doing who you are fighting
Chinjao hadn't used haki in 30 years but it was the exact same lvl it was 30 years ago his physical strength and stamina might have declined but not his haki

Considering Recent chapter proove the Ex-Marine theory on Dragon, I don't Doubt that Aokiji is Working with the Revolutionary Army to dismantle the marines. Aokiji would have joined Luffy's crew but Luffy's crew was absent for 2+ years, so he went with Blackbeard because Big Mom and Kaido were out of the Question. There was no act in putting down Garp and Aokiji wanted to do it himself since he may be able to pull a Saul again in the future. I think when Strawhats vs Blackbeard Pirates happen, Aokiji will fight the strawhats, but later side with them after he is defeated. I think Kuzan will become the Fleet Admiral of a newly Reformed marine with Coby, Smoker and Fujotora being the new Admirals in the end. I don't think Kizaru will be a part of the marines after egghead, not because he leaves but because the job was too much for him. Maybe the headline in Egghead is that a Former Admiral turn his head around a Goroseii, which let the Strawhats escape.
I feel like the reason maybe Joyboy lost initially os he wasnt able yo get people like Aiokiji or Smoker to defect from the world government where as luffy has half the marines ready to jump ahip and join him.

I think he got sour against WG after Sakazuki beat him to become Fleet Admiral, and joined Blackbeard because his crew was the strongest crew and he wants to beat WG.. Or he is a member of SWORD and is undercover there, same time acting as kinda like a bumper to BB's madness so he wouldn't go completely evil killing too much people... But even if he is now just completely gone to the dark side I know the fight against them will be awesome!
I don't think Garp's words are meant to criticize Kuzan for leaving the Marines I think it's criticism of Kuzan throwing in his lot with Blackbeard. Garp has a different point of view and understanding of Blackbeard than Kuzan. Blackbeard is the one that captured Ace. Kuzan sees joining Balckbeards crew as a means to an end but Garp can't ever accept that.

Yeah idk about "double agent," I feel like the point of his arc is to learn to work independently. If anything, maybe he's *studying* Blackbeard-dude's fantastic at scooping up random opportunities, so maybe Kuzan's tryna learn how to do that. He'll probably betray the Blackbeard Pirates to whoever steps up, when the time comes

I think Aokiji just wants to work with Blackbeard to defeat Akainu and then he will probably peace out. Plus he's mostly just killing pirates anyways, how that any different from what he was doing before? Now he can just choose not to for the most part if he wants and no one can really tell him otherwise. If he doesn't like Blackbeard he is in the perfect position to eventually betray him. I don't think he will, but still in a lot of ways Kuzan's postion on his crew makes a lot of sense, especially if he really is undecided at the moment. I think the only thing he has decided is that he is done with the Marines and the World Government.
I think he's aiming at being to Blackbeard what he was to the marine, an inside force that works to avoid atrocities being comitted. The difference is that he stopped believing in the ways of the marines, so he's doing the same thing in the 2nd most destructive force in the world.
It's really sad to me that Garp has to be this way, the man truly and whole-heartedly believes marines to be the right way, and tries his absolute best to show that. But ending up looking no better than someone like Kizaru, completely blinded and pridefull, being too scared to make a real change and acting up.
I believe that atleast Old Garp already knows how much he fucked up and how far he's gone, but atleast decides to show that marines ARE cool too one last time, that no matter what, if you do what you think is right, and do it through and through, YOU CAN make a change.
If not right now, then atleast for the future. just like Fisher TIger couldn't stop his hatred for humans, but knew he could change it for those without prejudice. Marines would be hated the moment the real history is revealed, but then someone like Garp, Koby and even T-Bone and many more that sticked with their way of good in order to help people, even if it meant serving under someone this corrupt, would be a beacon and a choice for everyone that yes. Being a marine is good, just like being a pirate is, anything can be good, and it is decided only by you and YOUR conviction. And while it is quite naive and flawed, i think it only makes sense for a member of the monkey family, one just wants to be the cool hero that shows what's right, another, in his disappointment, beliefs that the image of good and bad should be burned down and started a new, and another simply wants to reach his stupid and unrealistic dream. In the end it's their own way that they choose, that is what makes their choices and actions create change.
And i completely believe that is what Garp was trying to say, Aokiji wasnt exactly wrong, but for all he knew, Aokiji was just too lost. He had the power to create change, but could not decide what change he wanted and found himself on a road of darkness alongside one of the most evil people in history.
P.s. i love your videos, and i hope there's more analysis like that in the community, for as fun powerscaling shit is. it completely ruined the view many have on this series, and that is tragic for how in depth and truly real this funny pirate show is

Aokiji is the only character I can think of who has directly antagonized the SH's, is goofy enough to join them, has a specialty as a boatswain since they all respect his wisdom and authority, and is a former marine which they don't have, yet. He's also a logia, which they lack.
