    My favourite part about watching these old games is watching non star point guards. Their dribbling is superb compared to even star players today. Makes me appreciate the positional players of yesteryear and how guys really leaned into their role.

  • @dmichael100
    @dmichael100 Před 9 měsíci +9

    What do we like about the NBA and its players in the 80s as opposed to most players today? Is it just old man nostalgia?
    Dr. J, in his pre-game interview with Pat O'Brien said "All our guys are getting paid well"- so they should be professionals and ready to step up!
    Compare that to James Harden assuming he is due a max contract or pick any of a hundred stories about the attitudes and entitlement of today's players.
    Never mind the game on the court was much more definable and interesting than the three-point barrage and one-on-one breakdown off the dribble- that's basically everyone's offense today.

      @@brettrobinson2901 Doc is my favorite also. Those of us who remember what a thrill it was to see him play in the ABA with the NY Nets and then Philly in the NBA are blessed.
      He changed basketball. Almost single-handedly. I grew up in the NYC area and the Knicks at the time (early 70’s) were a great team that won two championships. I remember talking with my friends in the park one day and someone said “forget the Knicks you have to see this guy Dr J”. I was only 12 or 13 and found a Nets game on the local station and couldn’t believe what I saw. It t must have been like those people back in the early 1900’s who got around on horses seeing an automobile for the first time. He moved so differently than everyone else. He took the game into the air and above the rim. And off the court he was so well spoken and classy - but still cool with tons of street cred.
      Today’s players owe so much to guys like Doc and Bird and Magic and MJ.

      Totally agree. If you saw Doc in his years with the NY Nets in the ABA you saw a one man revolution. He changed the game of basketball. The problem was that the ABA didn’t have the exposure the NBA did. Luckily I grew up in the NYC area and the Nets got exposure and publicity locally.
      Doc did things on the court that literally nobody had ever seen before. If those Nets had been able to enter the NBA intact , they would’ve been immediate championship contenders. Doc subjugated his game those first couple years with the Sixers to fit onto a team loaded with ball hogs and gunners. George McGinnis. Doug Collins. World B Free. Daryl Dawkins. Steve Mix. Then you saw him explode in the 77 finals and Philly got rid of McGinnis for Bobby Jones and built the team around Doc and the rest is history.

    I always wondered what happened to their follow up season from their 65-17 championship ...... they swept the Lakers in the Finals just simply an amazing team. But at the beginning of this game the broadcaster stated there were key injuries to the Sixers up to this point in this featured season game - oddly all their main key players started over 70 games each that year so I don't understand what's the deal. It was my understanding as I am 45 years old - that the Celtics had no answer for Toney and that's the X factor for the 76ers in the previous match - ups with the Celtics. So they got Dennis Johnson to handle Toney - but see the oddity was that Toney was injury riddled after the 1984-1985 season and collectively only played 8 seasons in the NBA overall. Can anyone inform I what exactly was Toney's injury(s)? Was Toney supposed to be an elite player for years?

    • @vhssports2645

    So many calls went Celtics way..Dr J absent Moses resumes his scoring easily dropping close to 30 while double teamed and always in the eye of the Celtics defense busting this myth about Bird been dominating Dr J as the comment section urban fairy tales dictate these days..Check his finishes on the fast break how super fast he still leads his team spirit with these astonishing finishes and fast breaks, while his team doesn't really help him offensively by setting up plays, or screens or isolations 1 on 1 ,where he could really light up Bird as he has done time and time again one on one..never mind been 34 while Bird is in his best years!
    This man gave up way too much offense for his teammates in a way no other League Marquee name ever done!

      Really? Doc was in 6 championship series; his teams won three and lost three. He has four league MVPs, and was a 3x All-Star MVP, and scored over 30,000 points in his career. Averaged 24 points, 9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals per game for his career as a 6’6” forward/guard. Has over 30,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 5000 assists for his career. Dr. Choke??
      Man, put down the crack pipe; Julius changed the game and brought it into mainstream popularity single-handedly and caused the ABA/NBA merger. The NBA wanted to do it in ‘72 just to get the Doc, but the Oscar Robertson lawsuit stopped it. Once that was resolved then the merger went ahead and the world saw what only a few had been privileged to witness; the Doctor operating.
