  • @jimcook1161
    @jimcook1161 Před měsícem +9

    The first series of BlackAdder is an exercise in alternative history, such as novels where The Nazis win WWII or The South win The American Civil War. In this case Richard III winning The Battle of Bosworth Field. In reality Richard lost and was the last English king to die on the battlefield and Prince Richard (Richard IV) actually died aged 9 or 10, supposedly murdered on Richard's orders.

    I recall how much I loved this as a 14 year old when it first came out. It's not true that its wasn't a success, it was popular and an award winner. However it was also very expensive, with a huge cast and lots of location filming. Obviously the Blackadder and Baldrick characters are very different, this is Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder, the other one is Ben Elton's version performed by Atkinson. I just don't understand the hate piled on this series, the other episodes feature Mitriam Margolyes as the sex mad Spannish Enfanta, a amazing witch trial featuring Frank Finley and in another Blackadder ends up Archbishop of Canterbury, and throughout you get Brian Blessed in one of his best roles.

    I think many who saw the first series when it was first shown loved it as something completely new and very entertaining. And, if you were a history fan or a Shakespeare fan it was all the more enjoyable because of the many related references. But the subsequent series were even better. The lower budgets meant that the writers had to become more creative and this pushed the show to new levels of quality. Those who saw the first series after any of the later versions might well have been a little disappointed as a result. Which is why the first series is sometimes less well remembered. But it was ahead of its time and is still well crafted and well worth seeing all six episodes. I'd leave the specials until later on, personally. Especially the Christmas one, which is a real treat to watch during the festive season.

    Season 1 is definitely below par but judging it on only one episode is rather unfair.
    I very strongly recommend that you also watch Episode 4 "The Queen of Spain's Beard", which is by far the funniest.
    It also stars Miriam Margolyes, who you might know from her outrageous Graham Norton interviews! Well worth a look.

    I love the first series but it is very different to the rest.I would skip to blackadder the fourth because you will get the historical context more,

    I wouldn't go near the specials, they were capitalising on a good reputation but clung to past tropes. You'd be better off following through on the first series.

    Ehhh.. "This is not Black Adder".. This is literally what Black Adder was, as it IS the first season. The OTHER is what is "Different".. It is absolutely not like Mr. Bean (Same actor, some physical comedy.. There are many more things that differs than are similar).. It is set on a rather correct historical backdrop (With many many references to Shakespeare's play).. with extremely good location scenes.... and.. it cost a lot..
    To save money and make it more available.. they changed it to cheap scenery, almost no location shots.. and to make it more readily available to everyone they reduced the comedy to boob-jokes (both kinds) and snarky insults.
    I wouldn't say either is funnier than the other, but.. Of course scripts, rolls, and actors get more refined after a while. Especially after the pilot (whenever haven't a second series at least been more "at ease"? even if it may lose some edge). They just are different and the reason people don't think the first is funny is EITHER because of ignorance (they don't know the backdrop. It may not be part of the humour but in comedy context do matter), OR because they are incapable of disconnecting the two modes of Black Adder from eachother, and even if there isn't more comedy in the latter series (If we look away at how you THINK you felt, you WERE laughing all the way through both of you, just at different volumes).. They made a huge change..
    but.. I am QUITE sure that IF you had literally seen this episode WITHOUT having seen the other Mr. Bean so you SERIOUSLY evaluated it ONLY based on it's own merits you'd find it a lot more funny.. if you ALSO hadn't been PRIMED (told..brainwashed).. that "you aren't supposed to like this" before hand.. you'd probably like it even more..
    That is why I don't like a shitload of people on the internet.. They are too self-righteous.. "I don't like this, therefore it is imperative that I get others to not know it".. Considering how priming works, this becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy and people aren't allowed to really just enjoy things and realize for themselves whether they like it or now. It becomes a funnel->echo-chamber styled event.. It's harmless, but.. why ruin people's fun? The WORST I ever do of the sort is that I may say.. "Well.. .I didn't like it... it had it's moments, but it wasn't for me.".. about media.. and even then usually on a direct question. Just in general in life I try to "Build up" instead of tear down.
    This show and Red Dwarf are two shows where the early episodes are WAY underrated.. and.. people make SURE to ruin people's fun. I don't agree with the evaluation, I loved the first season of both shows as much as the later, even if refinement and "comfort"+"refinement" on the show's side, and "Familiarity" on mine made the latter more enjoyable I still loved the first ones.. You know when a show you love ends and you wish you had more to watch, because you'll miss it?.. THAT is when you wish you actually followed the ENTIRE journey.. because even if the pilot episode and the first season of any show usually is at least slightly more rough.. It STILL helps you follow the journey, AND before you have anything to "compare it to" you can watch it with an unbiased mind.
    Of every person I know who actually didn't watch it "on recommendation by others" (as in: people who weren't told by others to skip the first series).. Every single one who whines about the first series being.. "bad".. literally.. SAW IT!.. in FULL!.. And also.. They DID start watching the next series as it came out.. They SERIOUSLY can't have thought it was that bad. ~I~ have watched some shows that I thought was bad.. The thing I did was to stop watching.. A few times SOMEONE have told me that "it got better".. and I have then either continued to watch from where I left off, or started watching at the point they said it got better.. and the thing is. .I'd say that 2 times out of 3 I still decided that I don't like the show and stop watching it.. There are at most two shows that I have gotten recommendations to watch where I decided to give it a second go where I actually DID think it started working after a while, the rest of the time I ASSUME it's because.. well.. people have their own views. People misuse the word often, but when it comes to media the word "opinion" IS correct to use.

    Just seen this opinion at the end....
    Carry on watching.... The character develops as the series goes on... Even if not for reaction videos. Ok I say this as a massive Blackadder fan who goes up watching it. Had them all on VHS and know them all inside out. But seriously as season one carries on they develop the characters more. The Spanish infanta episode is one of the best Blackadder episodes out of every season. So at least watch that one. 😀
