Building a full scale flying Delorean Part 1: Making the bodywork

- This is the first part of the full scale flying Delorean project where I make the complete bodywork out of EPS foam with the help of my ABB IRB6400 robot.
After I got my robot to work again (see video here: • Turning a broken 2 ton... ) I was looking for a first project i could make with it. At first I thought about building a type of sports car (maybe tesla roadster or similar) but then saw the "Back To The Future" movie again one night and thought that would be a great project as well. The model would be made out of EPS foam so it would even be light enough to maybe fly. So i started designing the model and did some calculations and it turns out to be actually feasable.
So the first part of the project is complete and the properties closely match the properties of the 3D-model, The 3D-model has a calculated weight of 13.940kg and the real life model has a weight of 13.890kg, which is only of few grams difference.
Subscribe to the channel if you want to receive updates on the next videos of this project, much appreciated.

A flying DeLorean? I haven't seen one of those in 30 years.
Hey, who was the president 30 years ago? (Oh jeez this joke isn't going to work. Mind blown)
1985 was almost 40 years ago now
You can see burning teslas though
It's a reference to the movie
And how long has it been since you last saw a truck full of manure Biff? 🤔🤣
It's not often I see a huge industrial robot arm being used for something like this. Awesome!
I had this same idea since the whole quadcopter craze started, glad someone has the time and capacity to finally make it real.
me too
I was waiting to see it fly, but being so close on the mass estimate was reward enough, nice work.
It lifted off @07:23
This looks amazing. Can't wait to see the completed build!
I love this for many reasons. Cant wait for the next episode
Looks awesome. Can't wait to see it fly.
You are my new CNC world class local hero. Thankyou for being born, ABB IRB6400.
I could watch you assemble that all day. Mesmerising!!
Oh wow, how cool! Looking forward to see if it will fly!
Excited to follow along! Big FliteTest energy.
Beyond words. this is going to be astonishing.
This is going to be so cool!
Great idea can’t wait to see the end product
Nice work!!!, I will wait the next chapters! Congrats!!
With a profile picture like mine, I was always going to love a project like this 😀
Now I Can follow your work!🤩
Echt insane cool project Brian! Leuk om weer een nieuwe video van je te zien :)
Haha Merci man 😉👍
Awesome stuff !!!
PART 2! PART 2! PART 2! PART 2! Haha! CANT WAIT!!! Amazing work so far!
Great Scott, Marty!
Great Scott interesting idea Thank you for showing us how to build one so cool. This is Heavy
Amazing!! Cool!
Wow man that is great
This is just far and away too cool. That first cut on that very expensive block of EPS must have been a nail-biter, though. Excellent work.
Alright. You got me. I gotta see this. Subscribed.
This is great 👍
*A flying Delorean? GREAT SCOTT!*
Great build!!!
Okay this is extremely dope goodluck on your project
Instantly subscribed. I want to see that thing fly
Fantastic work
Thanks man 👍
@@BrianBrocken greatings from Germany and a big Fan from back to the future
You don’t need roads where we’re going 😜. Cool …that robot was amazing! I’m gonna need a bigger shed now 👍
Wow Brian, impressive project! Succes 🙌
Thanks man 😜
subbed, love deloreans
I. Love. This!
So cool!! Some paint and LEDs and this could hang out at your local movie theater!
Super cool Birian!
Merci Roel 👍
This is insane...but I love it!
woow its gonna be awesome
Admirable capacidad de crear. Gracias!!
Very nice!!
I was here! This video needs more views!
Awesome
ASM-car baby!!❤
Using that machine to do that is like killing a flea with a 10000 pound hammer. lol. Awesome.
❣ Respect dude ❣
Really cool project. It would have been fun to mill a fixture out of my car.
Beautiful! Now please do a batmobile 1989
This man has been COOKING
”you mean to tell me you made a delorean out of a styrofoam?" "oh thats not gonna be heavy"
Ambitious project, but honestly, one of the coolest I've seen in quite a while. Can't wait to see the finished results
From the thumbnail, I thought this was some weird AI thing. Now that I see, it’s not, I’m intrigued, merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you too 🎅
Alot of Machine Time. Well worth it. Great.
finally. I watched on some youtube channel few years back that it was their dream to build such thing but I guess they never did it.
You need to make more videos! I'm currently working on the 3d scanner and can't wait to do the catapult!
"You built an airplane... OUT OF A DELORIAN?!" ~ Morty to Doc Brian while standing in the Styrofoam Pines mall parking lot.
😂😂😆
I wish I had the money/ resources to do anything to xD least u made it awesome for us all to enjoy 🤙
So you're gonna put the fans in the front and the back areas of the body and obscure them with louvers? That’s really cool! That’s the same conclusion i came to all the times I've thought about how to do this. Glad to see someone have the money and motivation to do it! I'd love for it to be possible to put them in the wheels and have that be the source of lift but there's no way i can think of unless the whole body was insanely light and you put maybe 4 micro rc turbines in each wheel or something. Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out!
I would assume that it would be a quad copter - the "wheels" would simply be nacelles for the props. Then it would easily be controlled by even off the shelf hardware...
Holy cow this is amazing! I have so many questions! Ahhh haha. I want to make a lightweight full size DeLorean time machine as well, but just to hang from the ceiling. The way you did it is so cool. That saved you so much time not having to cut and carve. Any more videos of this?
Thanks man, yes saved a lot of time with the robot carving the car but on the other hand spend a lot of time designing the car in CAD. I'm currently editing the second video, should be posted pretty soon.
Lighter then I thought it would be. Foam adds up quick.
Yes indeed it does
Ok you got a sub
Fuck yeah, doc!
Freaking sick!
Where is the part 2?????? This project is awesome!!!
YT is full of click baite and fake thumb nails. So I thought: Flying DeLorean? Of course… hoax.
But look how you delivered. Man, you did it! So creative. Thanks for sharing. Can‘t wait for Part 2.
the song you used for this video is the exact same song i used for my videos back in highschool, i remember i got it from some royalty free music site lol
Very very cool. She may not hit 88, but it’s sure looks neat!
FF Background voices actually compliment some parts of the Soundtrack. Cheers
Maaaan! Where is part 2? I’ve been waiting for so long…🙏
"Hey, Doc, we better infill. We don't have enough weight to get up to 88 pounds".
"Weight? Where we're going we don't need weight"
This will be the lightest Delorean in the world.
- Dad... I wanna flying car for Christmas...
- Hold my Styrofoam vacuum...
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads...
Do we have an update on this? Can't wait to see it fly
I might suggest if you are fiberglass the car you might want to add Kevlar to it make it stronger than fiberglass rags
dude this will be Farkn awesome when it takes to the skies, youll have Hollywood knocking at your door that or Marty telling you the worlds F up and we need to back to Dallas 22 11 1963
Im not sure what's happening here but im interested!
Next you need to build the submersible lotus from The Spy Who Loves Me.
Liked and subbed immediately
Thanks man, appreciated 👍
Wait a minute!? You're telling me, you've built a Delorean,
out of styrofoam!?
This isn't heavy
Indoor decoration? Hanging on the wall? What will his wife say? 😂😂😂
Marty: You made a TIME MACHINE out of Styrofoam?
My words! 🤣
Could have added some cocktail sticks to the joins for additional strength!
This has been done on most parts including the doors but in the end doesn't matter that much as most of it will be covered in fibreglass, which will hold everything better together and add more stiffness.
Endlich eine Sinnvolle Beschäftigung für meinen Kuka in der Garage. 😂
When will part 2 be out?
Dude, you could also make delorean boats! Its a foamy.
Looks like an aeroplane, without wings.
Havent seen one in 9 years
I want to see reindeer and a sleigh by next Christmas.🎄
Lets see if you can make it happen.
I’d love to see where this goes without roads
You've got some know how, the kinematics to convert the robot arm into a milling machine is very difficult.
I'm just amazed at how much glue is in that bottle 😉
It was more than one bottle 😅
@@BrianBrocken 🤣 I know I was just being silly
When's part 2 coming outtttt
Where were going we don't need structural integrity!! 😂😂
Faut voir grand dans la vie, quitte à voyager à travers le temps au volant d’une voiture, autant en choisir une qui ait d’la gueule. 😎 seuls les fans connaissent.😁
I watch till the end of it
Thanks man, appreciated 👍
Hi there, I have a question for you. I was considering purchasing a 5-axis CNC router machine from a Chinese Alibaba store. However, after watching your channel and seeing how you built your compact supercar, I'm interested in the robot machine you use. Could you please let me know where I can find it? I appreciate that it doesn't take up much space and has a fixed price. Thank you!
@automotive-engineering960 not taking up much space is pretty relative 😅, i found mine on Machineseeker.com
You made a time machine out of a DeLorean, out of polystyrene!
cool!!!, where did you find such a milling bit?
