    Well they start off showing Asuka as over-the-top confident and brash, and even a bully, to make her eventual fall into complete depression all the more jarring to the audience, imho.

      This was also heavily reflected in the manga. I definitely liked her character shift a lot in EoE as well. Her going from super cocky to crushed was absolutely jarring, yeah. Great from a storytelling perspective though.

    • @SilverHunterN

      Trust me, theres way more annoying bitches than Asuka. I came across a proper tsundere in another anime and constantly abuses people, especially this boy on every. single. episode and everyone forgives this bitch in the end anyway plus she gets the boy instead of other girls who are kind hearted. Oh yeah, and for some stupid reason, commenters hated one of the kind hearted characters that they "wished she died" I was like WTF? I spoilt the end of this anime and I thought "Welp, not watching this anymore".
      As for Asuka, she actually stands up for shinji once by deliberately taking a hit for him in one episode, plus when he threw a sponge over the other side, she said "Ow!" and thats it. If this was that other bitch, there would be a lot of bitchness and abuse going on. I'd say Asuka is about half as bad.

      That may be true, but I highly doubt Asuka is what I consider "The Most Kind-Hearted"
      Especially compared to characters such as Orihime Inoue, Tohru Honda, Elizabeth Liones, Kosaki Onodera, Tsubaki, Madoka Kaname, Holo, Yuki Nagato, Rem, Nagisa, and Winry Rockbell.
      All much nicer characters than Asuka.

    The story of Asuka is such a tragic one. How well you pilot an Eva depends on how in sync you are with it, basically the better a pilot you believe you are, the better pilot you are. She feels like she has worth because she's good at piloting. But if you start getting doubts, it'll reduce your performance, increasing your doubts, reducing performance, increasing your doubts, and so on and so on.
    In a show where all the kids and adults are all messed up in their own special way, Asuka comes along and is such a rock, mental stability wise, but turns out to be more messed up than everyone else.
    Poor poor Asuka.

      +Gara Von Hoiwkenzoiber she sees shinji as a treat to her confidence on piloting , because she were able to pilot a eva with no training ...I always saw her as a dificult girl who didin't gave a fuck about shinji but now I can see that she likes him a little bit because he represents a treat to her confidence ..she doesn't know why she feels that way because she is immature in her way ...the hate against shinji is only because he's clumsy .if he were confident like kaji for example she would respect him much more. ..her admiration for him comes from the fact that shinji ignores her as if she wasn't worthy of his attention .. she is just not socially prepared so he ignores her instead of trying to impress her...poor shinji . good memories from evangelion from the first time I saw this shit ! sometimes I wish I could go back to the time I watched It first to see my own reactions back in the day ..I totally forgott

    One of the reasons I love Asuka, is that she not only changes things around her she changes the people around her. She helps Rei realize that she's not a doll, albeit slapping her and arguing with her, it's still definitely one of the things that helped Rei realize she had a stance at all and something that she could change and explore. Shinji becomes stronger, he begins questioning others and the situations around him. Asuka pushes him to figure out why he does things, why he takes orders, why he pilots the eva, why he feels certian ways. Shinji keeps a lot of his personality in tact, much like Rei, but both realize they have a stance and worth. Now Asuka, despite her crippling self doubt underneath her tough and proud exterior, knows that she has to take care of herself, something Shinji didn't realize until the end of everything. "Did it take you that long to figure it out, stupid?!" Asuka is just as messed up as any other character in the show, but she carries her weight and alone. Yes, she's depressed and lonely like everyone else, she sees herself in Shinji, but what I love about Asuka is that she's willing to do something about it. She fights for herself, she knows she has problems and she's not above using her abilities to overcome them. She fucking embraces evangelion unit 02, she does her best in school, you may think she's bossy and abrasive, but she's a trigger, she changes everything. I love Asuka, kicking ass with her evangelion unit 02 and kicking ass with her abilities. She's not afraid of the world, she takes it head on.

    • @alicepinkclouds2762
      @alicepinkclouds2762 Před 7 lety +37

      Asuka was as empty as any other character in Nge as I had mentioned, the difference between Shinji and her was that she placed her identity and self worth in piloting an eva on her own. Shinji quite frankly didn't know what to do with himself or what should be done other than impress his father. Both Shinji and Askua lead unhealthy life styles, the difference was that Asuka knew she was ultimately alone, something Shinji didn't realize until the apocalypse. Asuka still tried to kill herself, because her self worth had been destroyed, she had placed all her value on the eva. But nonetheless, she was fully aware that the decisions she made were her own and for herself, even if they were unhealthy choices. Even though she failed, she kept moving forward on her own accord and decisions until her demise at the end of evangelion.

      I'd say Shinji and Asuka are both toxic opposites in the way they deal with their trauma. And that their coming together is a realisation that they need something in between too. And arguably that Shinji causes just as much upheaval to the other characters in a different way. its like yin and yang, they are both as flawed as eachother, and eachother's missing piece.

Since her aperence this is pretty apparent with the hole thing about getting kaji's attention. This apperent ignorance and egoism is pretty annoying for a lot of people, even more if you think about the characters that have been introduced until that point, which act in a more mature way, were the ones whom captivated the majority of the audince and she appears as the opposite (that doesn't change the effectness of her character on the show but she isn't varry likable)....
      By the end of "The End of Evangelion" movie she is way more relatable and likable (even more likable in contrast with the film portrayl of shinji that, although was relativily well explaned and had sufered just some suttle changes, transformed him from a depressed kid really afraid of been hated and abanndoned to a pschotic kid that can't contain any of his gut fealings and reactions (in other words his id) and that kindda likes building things to destroy them), but in the series she is just a sad annoying brat whith a really sad and harsh past.
      At least these are my thoughts on that, sorry for the long ass post.

    I really don't understand how anybody who has actually watched the show to the end can think that Asuka actually is egoistical,arrogant,prideful etc. To make a long analysis short: Asuka is a traumatized and scared little girl who wants to be the best at everything so that she won't be abandoned again.Her being "a total bitch" is just an act to reinforce the "I'm the best at everything" persona.Geez people it's not rocket science...

    • @BestWayKilla
      @BestWayKilla Před 9 lety +146

      +maliivan1993 People act the way they want to be perceived. So saying she's a total bitch is, in fact, accurate because she's actively trying to be a total bitch. Therefore, her acting like that as a defense mechanism only proves that she has terrible coping strategies for her past traumas. In other words, she's exactly like every other major character on NGE.

    • @jorgepeterbarton
      @jorgepeterbarton Před 6 lety +13

      yep, but arguably that's where that persona type always comes from, not necessarily in the extreme of asuka's trauma. 'narcissistic traits' are a 'fight' defense mechanism. she literally has PTSD as do a lot of the characters. Shinji is more flight/freeze. both their reactions are not so different really, they both deal with trauma and abandonment issues.

    Asuka is a character that I liked the first time I saw the anime and I love it, she is also one of the few tsunderes that I liked along with rin tohsaka and misaka mikoto (the tsundere trope seems stupid to me)
    I was shocked the first time I saw that many hated her on the internet and harassed me for liking the character
    I hate negative comments towards the character but I try to tolerate them, still it's annoying and frustrating to see that something you like is hated by some people (this is not the only time that has happened to me)

At least when Evangelion pans over shit it has relevance to the themes and in some situations carries heavy visual symbolism. At the very least the characters are talking over something of substance while it pans rather than a boring exposition dump

    On the subject of *what Eva is about* being the importance of interactions, I've always been a staunch defender of End of Evangelion not merely because the movie ending protects the existential allegory's integrity (unlike the abstract final episodes of the series) but also because it satisfactorily resolves the story's central theme when Shinji is given ultimate control over Human Instrumentality. When he has the opportunity to permanently end pain and loneliness by melting and merging all people together, he decides instead to maintain the A.T. Fields separating souls because, despite the isolation he has experienced in his life, he has also come to understand that individuality is a prerequisite for the interactions he has come to value-a prerequisite for love. Suffice it to say that the Shinji we met at the start of the show wouldn't have held the same perspective!
    Because I view the story this way, I especially appreciate what you had to say about the role Asuka plays in Shinji's development within this tremendously insightful analysis. I hope you'll continue the series!

You open my eyes to so many parts of these shows that I never would have seen otherwise, and that's helped me find my own love of analysis, though I am still fairly new at it, I have a blog breaking down songs and entire albums to show what they could mean once to twice a month, and I swear, it may not have happened if I didn't find your videos at the time I did. Ambition and drive on their own are good qualities, but they can be put towards terrible goals as well. By all rights, Stalin should have committed political suicide several times over before coming into power, but through the sheer power of his own ambition, he rose to become one of history's greatest dictators with the blood of literally millions on his hands, many of them his own people. So that kind of attitude isn't inherently a good thing. I don't see how growing up makes her more likable, considering she has the maturity of a, well, child. You know what they say: you only get one chance to make a first impression, and hers was not flattering. The second, third, fourth, and so on didn't help matters if you ask me.

But it's such an irony that Asuka shows up as an revulsive (though not repulsive) character with a flattening personality who just aims to go through anyone who opposes her and by the end of the series, all her confidence and what made her such a key character is gone. It's quite the plot twist.

    Asuka is a character I really struggled to like. and even now most of the time I don't.
    Perhaps it's that tone change that you say that does it to me. I was enjoying the series more serious themes and free of all the anime stereotypes up until her appearence. I never liked that anime girl type who dominates everything, is the centre of ecchi action, pushes men around and slaps them all the time so even when her backstory is revealed I still can't find myself enjoying her at all.

    End of Evangelion movies have a lot of underlying narrative surrounding sexuality, specifically Asuka's experimentation with Shinji in heterosexuality being framed against her asking Misato to kiss, after her post-instrumentality consciousness observed Misato's relationship with Kaji. I always thought it was a little odd how they replayed that iconic evangelion scene where Asuka confront Shinji for a kiss but his anxiety is too much, but this time with Misato saying you're not old enough. It's really reflective of Asukas thoughts and feelings, she's very confident but there's a lot happening underneath.

    I remember people saying that Asuka was their ultimate waifu while first watching, and I was so confused. I thought she was so annoying and I had no idea how anyone liked her. But once the series progressed and I got to know her more, I really started liking her. Her story was so tragic and the person she become was so interesting

    Damn, dude. This was so deep, I really liked this not only does it make me watch to rewatch. It deepened my understanding of the series, thank you.

    And it all returns to nothing, all comes tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling down,
    I just keep letting me down

    Digibro, I like your work and how deep you can go into a show. That all I got to say. Can't wait for you to get to The End of Evangelion.

    Asuka... my first Tsundere and still the best. Anyone else ever read *Eva: ReTake*?
