My husband Dick and I got hooked on luxury train travel back in 1989 having won two tickets for the Orient Express in a raffle. Since then we have been frequent guests on the train. If you can afford it, like we can, getting one of the three suites on the train is definitely worth the extra. The champagne doesn’t stop flowing and the 24/7 butler service will pamper to your every whim. (We’ve tried all 3 suites. We loved them all, but if we had to choose a favorite it would be the Istanbul.). Fingers crossed this covid thing is sorted by May because we are looking forward to 4 nights on the Venice-Vienna-Paris route.

That raffle in the 80's was from a T.V. show.? Do you have any idea how much is it from London to Venice now? I have just ridden TGV but I guess this one should be more bucolic and relaxing. I wish someday we can have the whole track down to Constantinople ( Istanbul) like in the roaring twenties. It will be great, don`t you think?

I remember this documentary. I was a huge fan of trains when I was a kid and my parents brought me a copy of this and "There goes a train". I really enjoyed the music and the amazing footage shown. It gave me a view of what the world is like when I was a very young child.

@KS: It would also be on my bucket list but for the fact that I have to be realistic. Latest price for 2022 is €18,000+ per person. A small Lotto win would sort all that out. When you eventually make the trip, I wish you all that I would wish for myself. Enjoy.

@Jarrod dark Because dreams don't come cheap. In order to get full value for your money you must embrace the concept of exclusivity. This is no ordinary train trip. If your imagination will allow you to go back to the era when the original Paris to Istanbul train ran, you will get the maximum benefit from your trip. Throw yourself back in time. Dress to suit the occasion. Be back there for the duration of the journey. Enjoy.

Life on Oriental Express was like two couples from different planets living together. No one can deny the fact the good old beasts and their onboard services were fancy, stylish, show-up, and luxurious but only for the wealthy who could afford it. But the comfort and travel in style came at a price for the poor railway workers on the other side of the train. Those trains run with a black thick smoke of cock and boiling steam. The engineers and drivers often look like a Colombian drug mill after a very long and difficult working day and yet receive very low payment just enough to survive and feed their families. However, for the pompous people in the carts, it was just pure joy and heaven on earth with a good plate of meal followed by a good cup of tea, and a glass of good wine, and yet they still complain about the poor staff who served them.

    It appears boring???
Is there a trip that is more stimulating to all senses, you know, “exciting and physically challenging”..! This trip looks so sterile and “deadish..!”

Sadly not enjoying this. It's too 1960's BBC. The commentary is too formal with no enthusiasm. I would love a vlogger to take a trip on it.

@Tony Toon's Tours: Check out Flying The Nest on CZcams. Two Australian kids who do a lot of this stuff. Very enjoyable. There's also a video by Thomas Claflin which is worth watching. There is a video by a couple, Dutch I think, which is also excellent. I've watched them all because I can only dream of doing this trip. Enjoy.

If you enjoy videos such as this, may I suggest the ones by Rovos Rail in South Africa. Pretoria to Cape Town is magic but Cape Town to Dar-Es-Salaam would compare favourably with VSOE London to Istanbul.
