Atari: don't sell that thing for less than 300 dollars
Sony: $299.99
But what about tax??
Thug Life
*robot hooooooouse*
Sony is 300 bucks
And then the Jaguar was a complete flop and died out pretty quick
I remember when my dad bought the PSone for me. I was just 4 years old but the startup music is melted into my brain. I just loved playing it with my dad
The PS1 startup sound is probably my favorite sound ever created by humankind
yeesss
It and the Dreamcast for me
Naitrio please don’t tease me 😥😥😥
For me it is both ps1 and 2. Although ps2 sounded like nightmare fuel
you mean the PS
If Sony puts that "playstation start-up sound" as a sound option in all of their computer/phone products, it will sell fast like hot cakes.🍻
I thank those men that created the playstation. God bless them.
Yes
One of them being hiroshi yamauchi! Thank you hiroshi!
Lol I didn't know Steve Jobs promoting emulation and piracy of PS One.
You didn't need to pirate, just stick the disc in the drive.
@@SamuelSarette You need to buy PS1 thou
@@mightyhadi6132 emulation itself isn't piracy. And not illegal (thanks so Sony running that very lawsuit)
Only downloading/ripping games you don't own is piracy.
@@SamuelSarette proper emulation exist which is by owning the consoles it self. You need the code and bios . Because by logic all the games in PlayStation are made for PlayStation. Other wise Sony wouldn't make PlayStation to begin with
@@SamuelSarette its piracy if u ask Nintendo
The CD Colour (which were actually a dark shade of purple, I believe) had nothing to do with the protection: the legit discs actually had a "wobble" of sorts, marked near the edge of the disc, which was different to a regular CD-ROM's "wobble". This is a common mistake amongst the beliefs about the copy protection, but regardless I enjoyed the video thoroughly :)
This is correct. There was however a video tour of a sony pressing factory for ps1 games where the voiceover claimed the dark ink in the cds was piracy protection. So some people believe that sony was promoting the dark color as an anti piracy measure to throw people off the scent of the actual DRM method
the only tho that it did is that you could tell if a second-hand game was pirated
What was Atari gonna report Sony for?
Not sucking?
For having actual games that don't suck compared to their sucky ass Jaguar lol
We live in a world where somebody that's robbing your house can sue you for getting injured.
I think Atari was gonna sue Sony for potentially making them jealous....
atari didn't like that sony had the money to sell their console at a loss and that's why atari reported sony for unfair competition
@@TheFurryInShambles come on guys, the jaguar was not that bad, it had that annoying game with the simple 3d head that kept asking "where did you learn to fly?" Wait that game totally sucked ^_^
Dude that was like 20 years ago for me! Tomb Raider, spyro, demo disks, PlayStation magazine, discovering the ability to play music CDs back in 1998 was a big deal !
Michael Hart ahhh Demi disks that takes me back
I completely forgot about the play station magazine coming with demo disk.
nostalgiaaaaaaaaaa@@manassehdawkins4826
I will never forget going from NES, Sega, N64, and finally PS1. I popped in this little game I rented called Medal of Honor and the controls frustrated me. The left stick let me move and the right stick let me control the camera. I was so used to N64 and only needing one analog stick. It was like learning how to play guitar or throwing a baseball with my left hand. It was incredibly frustrating and I was pissed off. I shut it down and came back later when I cooled off. Think about that for a second. We take for granted the Xbox and PlayStation controller but at that time, it was new and difficult to learn when we were all used to D-Pad controls and N64 with only one analog stick. Haha!
Hahaha thats why my dad refuses to play new games
In the UK Lara Croft was presented as the PS1 mascot...
That'd because Tomb Raider was made in the UK.
Her tits kept getting bigger each game. Tomb Raider was way over rated though, the ps magazines would always give them 10/10. Before the internet got popular the ps mag game reviews held alot of sway, there was probably a fair bit of collusion going on.
To be fair here in the US Lara Croft, Crash and the clown from Twisted Metal were all unofficial mascots...they always appeared in PS promos and demos.
I'm not sure, crash was pretty big in the UK too. but she was definitely one of the main ones
I had to turn my PS1 upside down with books on each side as I played foreign titles with the CD door open and a toothpick on the spin button. Don't remember exactly why I needed the toothpick.
Paul Guilbeault you nee e the tooth pick for the disk to spin ther is a lever tou need to have down for this disk to spin
wait a minute, are you saying you were disc swapping on an upside down original gen playstation 1?
holy shit.
Fact 52: the PS logo on startup is not an image, it's a 3D rendered logo.
Always remember driver 2 flashing up after that start up. The memories! Was my favorite game.
here's another well known fact about the ps1 : back when red bull was starting young (i think) the original wipeout game actually endorsed red bull and it blew up. any game mode with phantom speed is what keeps racers drinking 13 gallons of red bull anyways.
Nice PS1 facts, it's good to see a top 50 facts on CZcams that are actually interesting
True
I worked for Sony for 10 years.. The disc's looked black.
But we actually used a purple ink.
It was also a pain in the ass to work with.
Years later we used the same ink to created vinyl record looking cd's
:)
0:14 my body wasn't ready for this nostalgia hit
FishikK me too .. they teased us
I don't know why that 299 bomb still gets me hyped.
Hello, sir. I am so glad I found your channel. Such well made videos and I love Playstation! Thanks for your hard work!
I love your PlayStation documentaries, Ryan; you’re really talented, indeed.
I’m also an avid PlayStation gamer who appreciates videos about our gaming platform’s lore.
i used the ps1 back in the day to make beats on software called music 2000(mtv music generator in the usa), i started rapping over those beats i made, well one of my songs hit number 1 on the student charts in my local city, as a teenager i thought wow life couldn't get any better
Your background songs of choice for this video is so on point. Well done!
Memories, the top 5 of my childhood was Playstation ( after bmx, snowboard and other ). I'm born -80 and really miss that time.. Good video, thank's!
Come on down to Thank's! We got gratitude!
PSone is my most favorite console ever. I've owned and played on almost every gaming platform from all playstations, to all nintendo handhelds, to pc mmos, to mobile games. But there still nothing can beat the experience Playstation gave me..
Thank you, really enjoy it, lots of things I didn't know (Apple emulator , haha). Would love same video idea for the PS2 , as well for PS3 and even the PS4 is possible, keep up the good job, love the information you deliver, no where else does it show as good as you do :)
Never thought that nostalgic startup screen for the original PlayStation would be one of the greatest mysteries in terms of region-lock.
Definitely didn't know that, until this video.
Awesome video man thanks!! Lots of cool facts didn't know. And appreciate you used music from the legendary Castlevania SOTN. 💯
I have a complete Net Yaroze set, definitely the jewel of my collection. The midnight blue is rarer, however that one is nothing but a recolor. The Yaroze is a full blown dev kit. A limited one, but you can make games without any sort of extra equipment necessary.
I have watched a few of your vids now and you have earned my subscription :)
I've seen many of these PlayStation fact videos this was the most informative one I've ever seen well done sir from one youtuber to another
0:58 Dat one handsome man
1:32 I heard that square was meant files/documents
2:49 Net Yaroze was only black. Blue, green and grey were debug consoles.
One of the cool things about the Sony PlayStation, once a game was loaded. If the game had music tracks, You could switch out the game disc and listen to your own CD. You just had to switch back before the system needed to load up for new level.
Cool video :P Bought back so many lovely memories of the PS1 for me ;) Love the real Toro at the end to :D

"Square" means "map?" As a Silent Hill fan, I know that's a lie.
As a Driver fan, I know it means handbrake.
awesome video! U made my day! Was fun, great info and so well made! GRREAT!
The very first analog controller Sony released before the DualShock was actually larger than either its forthcoming successor the DualShock or its predecessor t original standard controller. Game Dave has a video about it. If I remember correctly it is called something like “Sony’s very first analog controller prior to the DualShock.” Check it out. It also had convex analog thumb sticks standard and it was only sold in Japan.

The launch window ish PS1 DACs are legit but without modifications best through the A/V port, thrift-store CD decks cannot compare unless they put an old Marantz up for a price comparable to the generic brands, hope the drive is easy to repair or replace because mine finally started giving up late last year! Great video
best console :3
I miss all that experimental stuff.
she was underage
I remember playing scratched music cds in my ps, somehow they worked more than fine in the ps with no errors, while in a cdplayer, it wouldnt read the disk at all
Fantastic video man, the PS one was truly ahead of its time, many facts I honestly never knew. P. S. Beautiful cat bro.
I didn’t know about the Japanese small hands controller and the cellphone adapter!! Awesome job bro! Really did your homework!
Mystic your subscriber base has really been shooting up lately keep up the amazing work I look forward to seeing you hit 150000 real soon

Cool video! I love the cat at the end!
It honestly feels like my whole body is melting every time I hear the PS1 boot up screen.
Daniel DeVito me too 😥
Love this video, great job man!!!
1:42 Actually, this wasn't an anti-piracy method, that was just there to looks cool and cool it did looks and still looks. I'm still amazed every time I handle those black CDs.
I love your videos man! This is awesome
great video man!
Thank you for another amazing video Ryan.
11:29 is the best part ! I miss those kind of endings on LTPS.... And never heard or seen the Sony Mouse !!
essential for Discworld, Clock Tower and Broken Sword ;)
Interesting article, where'd you find this info!!! A lot I didn't realise about. Two thumbs up!
the Kevin Butler ad that classic 299 commercial which put them back on top again.
Wow, didn't know any of that! Very informative, thank you!
8:14 0 OMG! I remember turning my PS1 upside down after a friend told me it would fix my disc read errors! And it did!
Great upload..thoroughly enjoyed..well made, informative and yet not stuffy. Thankyo. Awesome stuff. Before I go can I ask you are u boss eyed? When u turn to face cat it appears to be. Thanks again
You holding the cat in the end of the video reminded me of those bossess from old cartoons haha
That was an amazing video. I didn't know many of those things about the PS1.
The first „memory card“ was build in some Sega Megadrive game cartridges. And the game genie for SMS can also save game archivments. 😎👍🏻
Back in the day all l had to do is wait for the price drop.
Video showed up 9 AM sharp! Nice tuesday treat!
Oh that spyro game was so great as a kid. Can't wait to replay it
Well I did and was a bit disappointed lol
Never knew about the mobile phone link up, amazing for the time to be honest
Nice video that PlayStation intro sound makes me chill
omgogomg well done n what's the outro beat? Doh so ill
There is definitely few things in this video never know about playstation history thank you and great informative video.
The Sony Computer Entertainment sound brings back so many memories of either playing Crash Bandicoot, or watching around the corner horrified as my Father played Resident Evil 2.
Ahh the good old PS1!
Good times, good times.
Hey, how about a video like this but for the PSP or PS2?
Nice video! Thanks!
Your kitty is Star of the show!!!!! 💗
Is it called Kuro maybe? :)
@Stoppskylten, Melissa
Dude I would totally play Skyrim on my PS2 with smoothed edges for the PS1. It would be 30 disks however..
That start up god!!!!just makes me relax
This was such an awesome video. Ps. I love your cat asmr
This was a good video. I only already knew about 25 of these facts. Definitely better than all those clickbait articles. Can we get a sequel video, "50 PS2 facts"?
What do I hear as background music: "crash bandicoot". 😁
Black colour of PS1 discs was pure cosmetic decision, it had nothing to do with copy protection.
On the contrary, back then in the 90's it was heavily reported from multiple sources that the black discs were intended for that.
@Turok Hilsen *Intended* doesn't necessarily mean it worked.
@@MysticRyan nope.. only for cosmetic purposes
@@mostwanted2kay It wasnt ONLY just for cosmetic reasons.
@@MysticRyan Those were rumors, it's purely cosmetic. The copy protection was in the way they wrote the first bit of the CD in a swiveled pattern that can't be replicated by normal CD drives, but can be read fine.
Theres a lot in there I didnt know great vid btw whered you get that Saw 3D poster?
Awesome list, great video.
Haha the cat at the end xD 😂
The Black Cat was the one fact I didn't know about Playstation!!!! As Usual great content!!!
You know, I've heard rumors that Bethesda are actually working on a PS1 port for Skyrim. It is scheduled to release after the Sega Dreamcast version and the Atari 5200 Version.
The black aesthetic actually doesn't do anything to stop piracy of PS1 games. At most; it may make seeing the wobble groove a bit more difficult, but that doesn't stop the old disc swap trick. It also didn't stop mod chips that would eventually replicate that disc authentication without needing to swap discs.
nice video man
I have the link cable to hook two playstations together. All you need is two Playstations, Two copies of the game, two TV's and they all gotta be close enough to hook together. Very labor intensive . But it is worth it to have full screen two player games. Vigilante 8 or Crazy Ivan got a lot of play. Command & Conquer was a lot of fun, mean cut throat play against my roommates
Nintendo betrays Playstation
The shield hero theme starts playing
Amazing facts! I didn't know some of these.
I had no idea the plastic could potentially melt.
I've had my PS1 since 1995, and it still works like a charm. It has not melted.
#27. Polygons and textures (at least at PS1 level) didn't take up that much memory.
It was mainly FMV's, voice overs, and music audio that took up memory and why some games were on multiple discs.
For example, every Final Fantasy VII disc contains about 99% of the same 3D data and bitmaps. It was only the FMV's that were different on the discs. It's why even on the last disc, you can revisit all the old towns and fight all the old enemies in random battles.
Riven took up five discs because the ENTIRE GAME was pre-rendered graphics. The fact that it WASN'T real 3D was why it needed so many discs.
I remember having a demo disc with rocks'n'gems game on and wish I could play it again
When showing Ebay prices, you must include sold listings. It doesn't matter what any asking price is, what matters is what it actually sells for.
I had an upside down PS1....nice work on the info.
The Net Yaroze was actually always that dark gray 'black' tint. The ocean blue and green ones were debug units.
Brilliant. Much info in small time = Genius.
The black disc had nothing to do with copy protection. The coating is fully reflective to the infrared light of the CD-ROM laser. The sole reason for the black disc is so the consumer will know that he or she is holding an official Playstation licensed game.
One thing I will always remember about the PS1:
Back then I stayed with my father only on weekends and we had a PS1 with Final Fantasy 8, Crash and Legend of Legaia
I always woke up very early to start playing right away but he didn't want me to play a lot, so he told me that he can open up the Console and check how many hours I played and I belived him LOL
Because of that I never went overboard. I realized this a couple years ago and we both laughed pretty hard remembering this
Sam Brown legend of legaia is my 1st RPG, nice childhood memories u got there bro
@@kukung81 I loved that game. very unique gameplay and I really liked the characters. the growing thing on their arms was pretty cool back then
Please do a ps2 and ps3
I rarely comment anything, but now I feel I should, because you missed one really interesting fact. There actually was a PlayStation model capable of playing Video CD's. Also, you could mention disappearing ports in various models of the system. Apart of these, great video, as always! :)
Nice background music Dude
