- Hey friends!
Welcome to my channel where we discuss fashion, motherhood, and occasionally like today pageants and scholarship programs such as the Distinguished Young Women's Program!
I have been working with the DYW program for over a decade and one of the biggest reasons girls use for not participating is "I don't have a talent!" Too many girls have missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime because they can't sing, dance, or play a musical instrument for 60-90 seconds but friend let me tell you there are SO many other options and ways you can fill the time. Listen in and I'll give you eight ideas (besides the obvious) that you can use for your Distinguished Young Women's program talent! (This goes for any scholarship program or pageant talent as well)

This is so helpful!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this!
Thank you so much for making this video! I was concerned about my talent because it doesn't fit into the cookie cutter box of dance, singing, or instruments. I feel more confident now to preform my talent which is a cheer I wrote and choreographed.
That’s fantastic!! Way to be original!
hello, do you have any suggestions for competitions similar to this for college students?
Hi Scarlet! In my experience the closest in relation to DYW is the Miss America program. Many DYW girls go on to compete in Miss America because of the emphasis on talent, interview, public speaking and scholarship opportunities!
Hello! If I were to do a talent of drawing, how do you think I'd go about that? I worry that under pressure it'd go worse than I'd expect for and also the silence might be really awkward
Great question! These are the first things that come to mind - you could display a few of your best works on easels and talk about them. The style, your process, etc OR display a couple on either side and use your 90 seconds to teach the judges/audience how to draw a simple subject - maybe a tree or something simple that you can draw large and quick enough for them to see! The judges can’t judge the works that are displayed but it helps add to the performance!
@@CassieDeJarnett could i also talk about my experience with drawing, and who influenced me to draw/why I love it?
@@Sunny-uq5ns Definitely!! I think that would be wonderful to add in to a monologue!!
what do you think about doing stand up comedy or martial arts
Both great ideas!! I would lean towards martial arts because you could choreograph something to music and show off some great unique skills. I think it would translate really well! Stand up would be good you would just want to be extra careful to check the content for appropriateness and make sure it makes sense to an “older” demographic as your judges will probably be 30 years and up.
Hi! I was thinking of doing origami for my talent. Can I do that?
That’s so fun! I think that would be great particularly if you had a story to go along with it that you could tell as you fold!
@@CassieDeJarnett thank you!
For a great example of taking something you love and turning it into a talent, check out how Miss Virginia used her love of science to wow the judges with a science experiment monologue:

Can i rap at a pageant talent show?🥺i feel like that's my talent and i really love rap music. It also makes me feel more like poetry 😪
Definitely! I would just be careful of the context of the lyrics depending on the judging criteria but I think that would be a great standout talent!
when it comes to singing.. is it allowed to sing a Christian song? or does it have to be secular?
Great question! It can 100% be a Christian song! I think that would be lovely!
