- Part 20 of the Gettysburg series
Although it is most noted for its role in the Civil War, the history of Gettysburg extends well into the 20th century. It was a tank training ground during WWI. Many citizens of Adam County served during WWII and the area where the Confederates charged the Union line of the 3rd day of the battle was the site of an Axis POW camp. And now the history of WWII is being brought to life in Gettysburg at the World War II: American Experience museum. We had a chance to go back and get an update on the progress of the museum AND hop in a genuine WWII Sherman tank and drive it over the same fields that the Confederates crossed on their march to Gettysburg. Definitely an experience like no other. Be sure to watch this one to the very end!

So many historical places to visit and not enough vacation hours. Guess I need to start a bucket list of museums for when I retire. I really enjoy your videos
Thanks! Hope that these can hold you over until that time.
@@TheHistoryUnderground the Monahan Family are great friendly people, I live nextdoor to their Funeral Home.
The look on your face driving that tank, priceless!
🙂
The drone video of the tanks rolling through the open fields, is absolutely amazing.
Thanks!
The motto of the red ball express was ''Keep them rolling!''. In the Netherlands there is now a conservation society dedicated to preserving and operating world war 2 vehicles that is called ''Keep them rolling'' in honour of the motto of the red ball express and in reference to keeping these historic vehicles operational.
👍🏻
Were many of the drivers of the red Ball Express African Americans?
I would love to know if that truck was apart of my grandfathers unit in WW2. He was a truck driver in the war. Apart of the 295th engineers. Like I know the odds are slim to none I’m aware. But just that what if factor.
Did anyone else see the preview still, read the title, and scratch their head? Love your channel, glad I stumbled onto it last month.
Yeah, I wondered if I had missed something, lol.
Ha! 😄
The title raised an eyebrow until the realization, not that Sherman but, those Sherman's.
😅
My thoughts too! ROFL!
Wow, being a retired trucker. I’ve driven everything from Freightliners, Internationals, Fords, GMC Astros an many others.I would love to be behind the wheel of that beast. Great video JD. Yes, the drone shot was out of this world.
I definitely learned a lot. So much to see there.
Glad to see the vehicles being saved. To me they're a work of art.
Absolutely.
WOW! I cant even imagine the feeling of cruising around in a Sherman. But I now am well acquainted with the feeling of jealousy! Haha. You constantly raise the bar in every episode, and you really killed it with this one. The collection at this place is absolutely amazing, cannot wait to visit, as this place is now at the top of my "Lower 48 Must See List". 👍🇺🇸
Thanks! Pretty amazing work that they’re doing there.
That’s it! I’m ready to move from northern Pennsylvania to Gettysburg in Adam’s county! The scenery, the music, the history and your opportunity to drive a tank!!!!!!! All the levers made me think of an old dozer and skid steer! Had to use your hands and feet to operate. Thank you JD. You made us all feel as if we were there with you!
Yup, its definitely a "hands on" experience. I can still smell the hydraulic fluid. Kinda sweet.
Thanks. I was excited to share the experience with everyone.
I’m ready to move there from Washington state!
This is the best "damn" history channel on you tube bar none! keep up the good work JD.
Thank you! Appreciate that 👊🏻
Love the channel. Another great video. 👍🏻🙂
👊🏻
Great mix of history. Proud of our soldiers whenever they served.
👍🏻
Looking a little like Odd Ball ( Donald Sutherland ) of Kelly's Heroes! with the beard. Just watch them negative waves baby! lol Looks like an amazing place to check out.
Ha!
One of the best history YT channels, keep up the amazing work!!
Thank you! Much appreciated.
That's really cool!
I noticed a 10th Mountain Division patch in their collection of uniforms. That was my Dad's outfit (K Co 87th Regiment) and the proudest thing in his life was serving in that division from Kiska to Italy. He later taught at Norwich University where General Ernest Harmon was president for a long time. General Harmon commanded tank troops in WWII and helped to relieve the troops in the Battle of the Bulge.
Nice. I love that they have representation from every division.
Strong Vincent was born in a town south of me and practiced law in Erie, pa. Which is very close to where I live. My grandfather was a teacher at Strong Vincent High School. I love watching your videos and learning so much history. Thank you.
👍🏻
That is wicked cool man!
Eisenhower trained troops under one of his first command South of Gettysburg in tank warfare. There is a small marker for that factoid (I wanna say burried near a cedar tree south of town, near the Rose farm).
Lol. As soon as I watched you jump into that Sherman that's the first thing I thought of.
Keep up the excellent work JD!
Oh wow. Didn’t know that there was a marker. I need to find that.
I remember when I was a kid camping out with my best friends and Trespassing on farms and checking out farmers junk dumps and old cars and such. One farmer had a Sherman Tank just waisting away in the with all the old cars and trucks. We loved to get inside and play around in this tank. It's all gone now. Them were the days. Early 60s. Love watching your vids.
Wow!
That smile when you let the clutch out, don't stall and then realize you're actually driving a tank.....awesome!!
If you are still in Gettysburg I highly suggest the Gettysburg Museum of History because though this museum is small it has a lot of artifacts from the Civil War and WW2
👍🏻
And if you go to Gettysburg, head west to Sharpsburg, Maryland / Antietam Battlefield! September 17,1862! The bloodiest one day single battle of the Civil War! It is very rural because a former Governor of Maryland ,Schaefer passed a law to protect that area from developers! Burnside Bridge is a must see!
When I was younger, LOL, we snuck into the pool at the Lee's headquarters motel. Nothing like a family run museum and the American Experience Museum looks to be one of the best, If we lived in Gettysburg I would get a job there so fast. Speaking of WWll maybe do a video on the "Red Tails" escort fighter pilots, I'm a A & P. mechanic. I've never seen a shift pattern like the one for the Sherman. This was a GEM of a watch, your videos put the History Chanel to shame. Stay safe and Stay strong.......
Thanks! I really appreciate that. I did a video at Tuskegee but it was less than awesome because they were closed. It’s in the WWII playlist.
@@TheHistoryUnderground I'll check it out.
A little trickery here. Not the Sherman I was expecting. Another awesome video!!
Ha! Thanks.
Howdy JD! Wow- too fun and ‘tanks’ a lot . The Meade School is on the list for a rest stop.
Awesome!
JD, I'd say you didn't stop smiling for a week after driving that Sherman! My wife treated me to an armoured vehicle driving experience a couple of years back (15 ton APC), and it's a cherished memory. Love the work you do!
I had a smile the whole time you were in that tank, never stop being a kid 😊
😄
A video of pure joy. And a camera shy dog.
Ha! That dog does not like me.
I was glad you mentioned how quiet it was. I thought it would just be roaring loud but it makes sense that it's quiet. WOW, thank you, that was so interesting.
Yeah, its kinda hard to sneak around in a tank, lol. Keeping the noise down is a definite plus to your Stealth Check. ;-)
Yes the title surprized Me to, until Lincoln transferred Grant to command the Army of the Potomac did Sherman as one of his senior staff officers go East with Him....Sherman was Grant's right hand man. The most Qualified fiel officer Grant had.
You actually stayed in my 3rd grade classroom JD!! And....I did sit on that bench!! Looking forward to the opening of the WW2 museum! As always, thank you for making us a little smarter....
Oh wow! Cool.
I love the channel. Keep up the amazing work.
Appreciate that!
first saw the heading and thought..when the hell did Sherman participate at Gettysburg?then realized it was referring to the tanks when you mentioned the WWII museum...guess i'll have to make a 3rd trip to Gettysburg and spend another 5-6 days there...thanks for the video
Ha! Good excuse to go back.
He got me too, lol. Especially with Sherman's picture behind his name.
Your series of Gettysburg is one that’ll launch your channel to the next level… so glad you’ve been able to nerd out in PA… Gettysburg gets it right with EVERYTHING …. Glad you’ve enjoyed your time and hope you revisit soon 🤘🏻👍🇺🇸🍻 just your expression and enjoyment makes this PA guy happy…..this series is the best you’ve let free in the history nerd wild……. Cheers and always feel welcomed in Pa
Appreciate that. I’ve been surprised by the response. I was expecting the worst. 😅
Made my day.
👍🏻
A little boys dream come true as a man! Thank you for sharing 💞
Great episode. What a collection of WW2 Vehicles! Driving a tank is an awesome experience. I drove an M60A1 Tank in West Germany in the 8TH Infantry Division during the cold War. Driving a Tank is something you will never forget. Thank you for your great series.
Another fantastic job, JD! You've helped to inspire me to go graduate school after I graduate from UNCG this May and apply to graduate school at NC State ( I live in Greensboro, NC) for my MBA in Community College Teaching with a concentration in History. I volunteer at the Bennett Place State Historic site and I'd love to entertain any tips on setting up a channel like yours to help inform the public on the true history.
Fun fact: My great, great grandfather was wounded at the battle of Antietam Creek or Sharpsburg depending on who you ask and my family has the bullet that he was wounded with. Rumor has it he was awake since he kept it and it wasn't a mortal wound.
Please keep up what you are doing!!! It's fantastic and inspiring to others like you!!!!!!!
Oh wow! Thanks!
They are fine works of art and industrial history, function and design assembled beautifully. 🌺
That looked fun!!
Omg did I just learn how to start up a Sherman tank?! I love this channel.
You most certainly did. Thanks!
Awesome video again JD! I live in Philadelphia, PA. And not too far from Gettysburg and I’m definitely going to visit some of these Civil War locations and can’t wait for the WW2 museum to open because I’ll definitely be going to check that out as well!! Keep up the great work you do bud! Take care now! See ya!
Thanks! You’ll love it!
@@TheHistoryUnderground your welcome!
And by the looks of your video’s, I’m sure it’ll be great!
Next year Gettysburg for sure!!
Wouldn't you love to be on a target range with that Sherman all loaded up.
You’ll love it!
Watching that Sherman tank roll gave me a glimpse into what Gen. Patton might have been thinking when he was re taking Europe from the Axis powers during WW2. As we lose the Greatest Generation’s Members, its so important we remember their stories. Thank you so much for doing what you do, and making sure we don’t forget our history.
I'm 72 years old and I'm learning so much from your videos. Thank you so much for doing these.
All caught up on current content and just letting your videos play as I get ready for work... these uniforms are AMAZING! Set to visit Gettysburg this summer and I hope to stop here! Can't wait! Thanks for sharing this and thanks to all those who save history!!
This video was AWESOME !!! The music you picked fit this video perfectly ... All the best to you and yours ! Frank from montana...
Appreciate that! Had fun with this one.
Outstanding ! What a blast that must have been. I’m so jealous !
Too bad you couldn’t shoot a live round into the Side of a barn 😆
Ha!
Frank and his family seem like awesome people.
Very much so.
Just found your channel and have been binge watching all your content awesome stuff dude keep it up. I noticed your famous word is "interesting" ever think of putting that on a t shirt with maybe the logo on it? Keep up the great work.
Ha! I should do that. Thanks!
Your welcome safe travels.
I think when we think of war we tend to picture people out in a field or something shooting at each other. We don't think about the incredible logistics operation...I for one had no clue most of these vehicles existed. I didnt consider this side of things. This will be a must visit for sure.
Thanks, JD. I'm always learning here.
👍🏻
About a year ago or so....whatever the algorithm that directed me to you or you to me......I'm very thankful. Keep it goin my friend. God bless!
Thanks so much! Appreciate that.
15:18... Yankee Division uniform, my grandfather proudly served in it. Awesome to see, made me think of him today. Thanks!
Driving the tank was so awesome!
Love your videos 👍
Thanks! Had a blast.
Now those are BIG BOY TOYS !!! JD , this video was fantastic ! Thank you !!!🤗
Ha! Thanks.
Ah! How amazing was that?! TANKS!! HOORAH! Brings me back to when I got to ride in the back of an M1 Abrams. I could feel your excitement! And I saw my patch! I didn't know my unit was in WWII? Mine was the 'z' with the circle around it. 102nd ARCOM! Even though it wasn't a "Gettysburg " video from the Civil War days, still quite educational. Loved it! Love the Inn, too.
Your video title got me! I read it and thought, 'wait a minute. Sherman wasn't at the battle of Gettysburg!" Thanks for the tour of the museum.
😅
General Sherman would be proud that these vehicles bear his name.
👍🏻
Incredible 🇺🇸 Thank you JD for sharing : )
👊🏻
LOL! You had me fooled by the title. I'm like, Sherman was at Gettysburg? I thought he was at Vicksburg at that time. :>
Ha!
I love this stuff man.
👊🏻
That was all some. I drove duce and a half, when I was in the Army 🪖 Thanks 😊
👍🏻
That new WWII Museum looks brilliant. Cant wait to go up there and see it.
It’s going to be awesome.
My two favorite times in our history, all representeted at Gettysburg. That is just another of many reasons why that hollowed ground is at the top of my bucket list. Going to have to really save money because I will need to make my stay last longer than expected.
👍🏻
I have got to stay there, it's really awesome! This is why I love your videos, you bring attention to such really great historical things that otherwise would not be seen! 100%
🙏🏼
Very cool! Merging history (tank over the battlefield and school with CW relics) gave me goosebumps. Excellent job!!
🙏🏼
One of the top 10 things I have ever seen!
One of the top 10 things I’ve ever done 😅
You should go to the Masonic memorial in Gettysburg. As a brother mason, hearing you speak about it, it would be totally awesome.
👍🏻
Brother Mason?
@@allysonh6410 yes ma’am.
One of my favorite monuments and being a Mason also has a special meaning to me.
@@bradbalderson8172 yes. I’ve only been there once. It’s amazing monument.
Great episode! We just returned from visiting the WWII museum in New Orleans. It's another amazing place!
Thanks! And yes, that is an amazing museum.
Oh man!! What I would give to ride a Sherman!! That was AMAZING!!!
Looks like you had the perfect day too! Definitely a great experience! Thanks for sharing it with us!
I thought you ment General Sherman and thought oh I didn't know he was at Gettysburg lol. Got me JD. What a great video. This must have been an absolute blast. Sure is fun watching. 👍🏻😎
😅
My grandfather drove trucks on the red ball express. So cool to see on this video one of those trucks!
Your Gettysburgh series is really awesome!!! I had relatives that lived there during the war and the house they owned is now a museum, its the Rupp House. I don't know what street its on. I remember my mother saying a little about it where during the fighting my relatives stayed in the basement while there were Confederate soldiers on one side of the house and Union troops were on the other side. There was a porch that wrapped around the house. Neither side know the other was there because of all the confusion and noise! A really wonderful work you are doing. Thank You!!!
Woe! The “Follow Me Jeep”!!! I never heard of those…that’s brilliant!
Yeah, I thought that was interesting.
They also had bombers in England painted like that so the bombers could form up on them. Really crazy bright colors and shapes like something from the circus.
Your smile was contagious. Great video.
Thanks!
I've always wanted someone to do an in-depth documentary on the logistical aspects of WWII. When you consider all of the moving parts and the sheer number of troops involved, the logistics had to be absolutely mind boggling.
I've stayed at the Federal Pointe Inn, and loved it. It was so nostalgic.
What a great video. Your camera work and editing are professional quality. Loved the jazz background music in the first part of the video.
Thanks!
Oh man, I can't wait to go see this museum!
👍🏻
Very, very, cool. I’m jealous. I was expecting a Tiger tank to come out of the bushes!! Well done.
Thanks! Need to talk to them about building some hedgerows out back.
@@TheHistoryUnderground Now you're talking!! Get Lt Winters and team to take out the 88's..........
I am so grateful for these videos. Thank you so much.
JD another great video. I love the things you find and see on your travels. Nice addition with the jazz music.
Thanks!
Another great video! I appreciate your insights and giving a tour of your hotel! Gettysburg is my cathedral, I love it and the area and add the rich history is priceless. JD you should also think of staying at
The Double Day Inn , only B&B on battlefield. Thanks for info on a place I could stay at.
Awesome! Thanks.
I almost thought you were going to let me down JD! But then you jumped into that driver’s seat lol! Awesome job!
Yeah, I couldn’t pass that up.
@@TheHistoryUnderground thank goodness because I started writing that comment differently until I heard you say “he must be crazy to let me drive” haha!
Had the opportunity to volunteer at a WWII museum in Ohio which has since unfortunately closed due to the owners passing. Got many a ride in many different vehicles so could share your thrill! WWII and the ACW are neck and neck as my number one passion. Excited to visit the new meuseum!
How cool was that!!!!! I'm thinking about the soldiers that had their heads popped up looking out those same man holes you were looking out from, and their stories! Really cool! Looks like a road trip in my future! Thanks JD!
Hey JD, are you known for being a master of understatement?, if your hotel room is “quite nice” I would love to see your reaction to a luxury hotel room, Lol 😂. Well once again JD you have ticked another bucket list wish for me, driving a tank, any tank, would have satisfied that particular wish, but a WWII tank would have been the icing on the cake for me, keep up the good work my friend, you do a fantastic job. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴🇺🇸🇺🇦
😅👍🏻
Seen some of this equipment in other museums...cool 😎. Absolutely, "If you don't learn from history you are DOOMED to repeat". Sadly there !!!!
This video was really amazing & seeing you act like a kid in a candy store when got to drive the tank was so cool.
🙂
My wife and I absolutely love all your videos! I've been a history nut, since my youth. Would love to see you do one at "Dragon mans military museum" in Colorado.
Also, If you havent already, the Little Bighorn Battlefield, would be cool.
Ever thought about dressing in period correct, reenactor, clothing?
Would be cool to see you in trail dusted, 7th Cavalry horse soldier uniform!
That would be cool. Thanks!
Now that was cool!! Do they have information about where each division was?
Not sure.
JD I thought your face was going to crack with that huge smile. I am officially submitting my services to be your best friend.....😉 That was incredible. Can’t wait to go visit that. Thanks Dude!!! Great Work and awesome presentation. You Da Man!!!
That must be one of the most comprehensive museums anywhere. Definitely on my must see list when I get back to Gettysburg.
Is that aluminum clad diner still across from the train station? It had great food when we were there.
You are going to visit the station aren't you? Lincoln arrived there to give his famous address,
It’s a pretty amazing place. Gonna cover the address down the road.
This will be a history buffs dream place to visit, for sure. That looked like so much fun to be in that tank.
👍😄
Absolutely
That is sooo awesome!! You know how to make me jealous JD! 💪
🙂
Excellent Vlog....It was Great to see you enjoying the tank....Thanks...
🙏🏼
My pleasure mate, You do a wonderful job and I thoroughly enjoy your product, no criticism meant. Thank you for what you do !
Never turn down a chance to drive a tank 😁. Too much fun JD 👍
Very cool, too bad it wasn't open yet in June. I'll certainly be back to Gettysburg, so I'll have to keep tabs on this place. I need to look into the hotel too.
Amazing work that they’re doing there. Super knowledgeable too.
I can’t believe you drove a tank! What a time capsule moment! Such power and pride. The older guy hit it on the head when he said from a time when our nation came together for a common cause. I don’t know if we could accomplish the same today with Millinials 😢.
The powers that be want us divided so they can continue to erode the country from within. If we actually came together and realized we're all getting played things would change quickly.
The all voluntary military is filled with Millinials!
Now I have another place to visit while in Gettysburg, I had three uncles that served during WWII and my uncle Kenny was with Patton the whole time after the invasion. Thanks again JD!
Check this off your bucket list!!!
