    I read so many comments from so many people being disappointed their shots aren't stabilized, or that when they walk it bumps around. My answer is always "think about the stationary hand held shot you need to do. then imagine holding that camera there for 20 minutes.. thats what the easy rig is for. no more, no less". wonderful system, especially when you need to pull focus or scratch your nose. I was tempted for the "competitor" rig but easy rig started it and theyre good people

    Great vid as always. Been thinking of an easy rig to use with a Gimbal for some shoots (to eliminate food steps). Have you used it in that way?

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  Před 3 lety +5

      Thank you brother! I actually did use it before on my Ronin M a few years ago. It was super nice to have for short side dolly movements or short forward and backward movements, but again, the foot steps aren't taken out, if anything its worse since the 3rd contact point (the cable and support arm) move up and down with you every-time you take a step. You could however loosen the tension on the Easyrig and have it where it's barely holding the gimbal up so when you take a step, the cable/support arm doesn't go up and down with your foot steps, but rather the gimbal would stay in place. You would have to hold some of the gimbal/camera weight if you did it this way but it seems like it would work. It's kind of hard to communicate what I mean.

    Hey Spencer thanks for the review....Did I hear you correct? Your rig is 18lbs and there's no issue with it on the Minimax? I was thinking of the Vario 5, but of course its pretty costly...but if the minimax can comfortably hold my rigged out FS7 or FX9 then the minimax may be an option

    • @airindiana
      @airindiana Před 3 lety

      I’m thinking of this. Just weighed my zcam and vazen rig and it’s 6.8 kg. Weight limit on this is 7kg I think? Vario 5 is interstellar price for me so it’ll have to be this

    @DavWoe Před 3 lety

    Thanks for this video informative video man! I just got the Vario 5 and can't decide about the arm (+130mm or +230mm). I know the Minimax has a longer arm but how far is it usually away from your body? Do you use the full length?

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  Před 3 lety

      Hey Dav! Good question, I actually lock the tension line in place about half way down the length of the arm, so it's pretty close to the body. I like it a lot more that way, I don't have to bend over a bit to reach my camera, rather it gets cradled a bit better next to my body and in my arms!

    • @DavWoe
      @DavWoe Před 3 lety

      @@SpencerWhiteman Okay that actually helps to decide. So it probably tangles too much when it's further away from your body? Also you can stand upright when it's closer? I'll probably go for the +130mm arm. Thanks - new sub! :)

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  Před 3 lety +1

      @@DavWoe When it's too far out it's just uncomfortable because you have to stretch your arms out far and it feels unnatural. And yes, you can stand upright when it's closer which is really nice! I'd probably go with the +130mm, that's probably the best bet, and it's that perfect medium between the standard and 230mm!

    I would have loved to have bought a genuine Easyrig but, at AU$3000 for even the Minimax, I simply could not justify it for the three or so times a year when I'd be using it. So I ended up getting an AU$300 clone, which has worked reasonably well for the last two or so years. It's not as refined and the vest needed a bit if extra padding and I had to replace the buckle with a better metal one, but overall I haven't been disappointed.

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  Před 3 lety

      3000 AUD for the Minimax? I bought mine used from B&H for 900 USD. You can get it brand new from B&H for 1,259 USD right now. Are you sure you weren't looking at another model? I am curious about those clones, I've heard some mixed reviews, but it's probably from people who have spent thousands on easyrigs and they want to justify their spending haha! I'm glad to hear it's worked out quite well!

    • @AustralianImage
      @AustralianImage Před 3 lety

      @@SpencerWhiteman I just typed into Google 'Easyrig Minimax Australia' at the time, and they were the prices. Repeating that now and I get lower prices than at the time. I guess competition has forced prices to drop. That said, while the clone has provided good and reliable service for several years now, I'm glad I didn't spend the money on a genuine unit. I've modified my rig considerably, bought a Crane 3s and was able to buy a Proaim Flycam Galaxy vest (from B&H at half the price that it would have cost here) that will hold both camera and gimbal (8.3kg) and allow me to do a lot more than an Easyrig would have allowed. I'm in the process of becoming familiar with the vest and arm, but already it feels good.

    I was toying with a clone and spent the extra few hundred £ on a proper easyrig minimax. Until you see it for real you don’t realise how spooky it is dangling a 10 grand camera on a string and springs and glad I didn’t go for a copy. The easyrig is mega comfy, not too short (im 6-2j and man it feels like a quality product. It’ll last a long time. Glad I splurged the extra. I was getting fed up of all my film gear being ebay specials. And no I don’t work for easyrig 😂. I couldn’t afford the vario. That’s clearly priced for the rental world. My rig is just on the mini limit at 6.8kg.

    Your is 18lbs? The payload max is 15.4 pounds on the minimax and they said not to trust it beyond 16lbs. I do feel like a lot of people are in the 12-25lb range and it’s odd that it maxes out at 15. That’s a very low weight range. You should not have to pay 3-4 times the price for a little more flexibility in load capacity imo.

    You can't walk with it? WTF?

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman  Před 2 lety

      You can, it just adds movement because of the way the anchor point at the top moves up and down with you. It's unfortunate, but I personally think it works nicely with a tracking shot of a person walking because of that movement. It feels as if you're "stepping" with them. Other than that, it's not great. The Easyrig wasn't intented for tracking shots though. It's just to take off weight from your shoulders and adds another anchor point for stabilization all while getting that "handheld" natural look. They just came out with an add on for this version that reduces the up and down movement when walking with it but its price is outrageous, more than the easyrig iteself.
