The issue of youth violence is a matter close to the group. Foster was bullied in high school, while bassist Cubbie Fink has a cousin who survived the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. Fink said of his cousin's experience, "She was actually in the library when everything went down, so I actually flew out to be with her the day after it happened and experienced the trauma surrounding it and saw how affected she was by it. She is as close as a sister, so obviously, it affected me deeply. So to be able to have a song to create a platform to talk about this stuff has been good for us."

The shooting gun part is very clear. The only meaning that some kids may not get is the reference to the trend of sneakers we wore as teens in the 90s, you pumped a ball on the tongue to add air to them, they were expensive at first. So on the ballad, he is presumably picked on because he either cant afford them or theyre not his style.

Sure, it's got a catchy beat. But this song has scared me so badly when I was a young kid because I listened to the lyrics. I don't think that qualifies as an awesome song.

Twenty One Pilots have been addressing mental health for over 10 years now too. Honestly, in my opinion they should get some credit for the beginning of more mental heath awareness and legitimacy and making it be “ok” to talk about it and help and support is out there.
A call-to-action song? I always had a raised eyebrow at the lyrics, and eerily how it just gets you to think less about it, well idk I can't speak for everyone but it makes me think twice, bittersweet song to listen to. I remember when this song came out and how most ppl gravitated towards it

The song actually is about a real school shooting done bye a bulled kid that’s what the song is about not just a kid imagining about it
so yes, the bassists cousin was a victim of the school shooting, but thats not what the song is actually about. It is actually about mark feeling the mind of a teenager that has gone ill, and become a danger to society. So, its not about a real school shooting, it’s about understanding the mind of a deranged dangerous teenager.
Here's a psychiatric explanation from a guy who was about 15 minutes away from mass murder in 1987. I attended South HS in Bakersfield, CA where we had moved to from Milwaukee. I had depression, a screwed up life, we were broke so didn't have decent clothes and the other students always talked shit about me. Not always to me, mostly about me. I had been in enough fights that they knew I could at least halfway hold my own but more importantly, I WOULD fight. I had a gym teacher who would join in on the belittling and shit talking. I got my hands on a fully automatic rifle and unlimited ammo and knew exactly where the entire gym class would be standing outside in close and closed in quarters where I could mow them down with little chance of escape or survival. I got as far as halfway to school and ran into a student from one of my other classes whom id barely ever spoken to and he asked if I wanted to skip class and go to his house and eat burritos. And play video games. I was hungry. That was the difference between life and death for probably 20 teenagers and one teacher. A burrito. That's how thin the line can be. Be careful who you bully. I never went back to that school. Not to study or to murder. I dropped out, got a GED and moved back to Milwaukee. Me and that other kid are close friends and still talk to this day. I wound up having a pretty decent life but I never ever forgot how close I came to doing something horrific. I was not playing. I was on my way to do it and had it calmly and coldly and meticulously planned out. So the psychiatric explanation is that there isn't one. There's nothing wrong with me psychiatrically. I have a normal life and function like a normal person, but I was a depressed, mixed up, and angry kid. Identify that kid at your school and help him. Don't make it become something it doesn't have to by being an asshole to him. Sometimes that mixed up kid kills himself, other times he kills everyone in gym class.
I can understand that…. I was bullied badly in school as well and ate lunch with the rejects…. There was this one kid that I was friends with and he was bullied worst then I was…. Everyone thought he was going to be a school shooter…. They were terrified of him but yet bullied him at the same time …. But him and I got along pretty well….
He never did end up shooting the school… Instead, he skip school for 3 months, went to Canada, came back, did his missed school work, got straight As and dropped out and got his GED…kid was a GENIUS!!!!

It is my opinion that the reason is not so much mental illness among children and "teens" but rather the many abuses against them that they endure, which has become normalized while largely ignored.
