    Peroxide use was recommended by a physician to remove debris from road rash and cuts. It's OK to kill off a small layer of your own tissue at this point (I was told) to make sure that damaged and potentially infected cells are removed before the healing starts.
    Peroxide is also used to help remove bandages that have been sealed to the wound by clotting blood and healing tissue.
    I kind of like the bubbles. It's reassuring that no dead tissue will be there to get funky while the injury is healing.

    • @bbruinenberg
      @bbruinenberg Před 8 lety +15

      +Xqwzts Because you're also killing white blood cells, the very cells that deal with the bacteria. And while cells might get replaced, it doesn't happen instantly, and can leave lasting damage as a result. Oh, and lets not forget that your immune system benefits from fighting off threats as long as they are not serious enough to leave any lasting damage.
      Edit: Looks like my comment was (partially) wrong. Look further down the chain for a correct explanation.

    • @anvilbound705
      @anvilbound705 Před 8 lety +32

      +Xqwzts Ignore rendom, it has fuckall to do with white blood cells, The reason is the undamaged cells nearest the wound are the ones that would divide and replace the damaged area, by using a contact killing fluid like that, you're doubling up on the amount of dead tissue that has to be broken down and whatnot to get to the point where you can start replacing the damaged tissue.
      In severe cases, this is the only way to prevent serious infection, but it's more harm than good for minor to moderate injuries.

    This advice, like many things in the field of medicine, is subject to the circumstances under which it is utilized. Most of the time, any bacteria that might infect an abrasion is benign enough that allowing our bodies immune system to take those pesky bugs out of this world with extreme prejudice is certainly the preferred methodology these days. However, if the invading bacterium is causing more harm than would a dousing of hydrogen peroxide. Then it can be beneficial overall. This really does come down to common sense. A bit of rug burn with a few abrasions isn't likely to cause an infection that our bodies can't deal with. However, if you cut your leg while wading through sewage contaminated waste water. Well then it's probably better to play it on the safe side. Endure the burn and watch for signs of infection. Common sense, as uncommon as CZcams videos that lack trolls in the comment section.

    here's why this sounds like bad advice.
    yeah, it kills good cells along with bad cells.
    but its limited to the surface layer. just like the bad cells are.
    you have tons more good cells beyond the layer that it kills.
    while the peroxide is good at thoroughly getting at pretty much the ENTIRETY of the bad cells.
    sounds like a great trade-off for the vast majority of cases.
    getting soap embedded into a wounds cuts/crevices/holes, as well as the surface
    scrubbing action seems like it would be much worse. as well as leaving infective particles in there.

    The cytotoxic effects of hydrogen peroxide is actually mainly due to the peroxide reacting with the iron-sulphur clusters of electron transport chain. No electron transport chain, little to no energy. Mammalian cells have their iron-sulphur clusters internalized in mitochondria. As such, the hydrogen peroxide is less toxic to our cells than bacteria.

      Hi there! Hi there! Hi there! Hey there! Have you heard about sin? Basically, it is anything that is wrong that we do to upset God. Sin upsets God because He is Holy. Just like this( Imagine if you saw someone being robbed!) God does not like sin, and Heaven is His God's home. So imagine you are sinning and trying to enter into God's house! What happens is, you OWN'T end up in God's House! Basically, you end up in Satan's, the creature who is decieving souls into going to his house, hell, which will be his permanent residence in a few years, where he wants to take millions of souls including yours! There is no second chance when you gte into hell. It is jail, but aint no bail". And that's why Jesus died. He died in our place, that we might just have a chance at life if we believed in Him. Repent of your sins and believe in Him!.

I use hydrogen peroxide and distilled water to clean the wounds and finish by swabbing povidone iodine and dressing with gauze. It's necessary to clean this regularly and this thoroughly so as to inhibit the growth of bacteria, which not only causes infection but also causes foul odours to exude from the wound. What I'm saying here is that hydrogen peroxide is not all bad when it comes to wound care. It's just that using it for minor scrapes and wounds probably does more harm than good.

    (Through experience) some wounds do benefit from the short use of the peroxide. As in, don't leave it on the wound for more than 30 seconds. In one instance, I had a canker sore on the inside of my lip for over a week. A white-ish scab had formed over it, apparently preventing/prolonging the healing process. I applied a small amount (so small that I used a Q-tip to dry it up after) and let it sit until the scab was gone. The sore was gone in 2 days. I'm not recommending this if you don't trust yourself, as ingesting this stuff can cause some really, really serious problems- so just be very careful if you do chose to do this. As for any other wounds, as the video stated, if it's serious please see a doctor, and if it's not don't worry about it because it'll be gone shortly.

Beyond that it's too aggressive, as stated in the video. BUT if you get a cut or a scrape that doesn't need professional medical attention, and all you have is peroxide, it's not unheard of to be encouraged to use it for the initial cleaning. Beyond that, soap and water. Chlorahexadine is a good choice, one we use VERY often, because it's not as dangerous to your own cells. You can get it at Walmart. Chlorahex is also our go-to agent for initial cleanings, but when you're out on a farm call, sometimes all you've got is peroxide.

    Hydrogen Peroxide can be very helpful because it destroys that damaged layer of skin (and doesn't hurt anywhere near the level of pain alcohol causes). That said, if you use Peroxide and not Neosporin afterward, yes, it can do more harm than good. The simple fact, though, is that soap and water wounds, in my experience, don't heal as fast as Peroxide-treated wounds. The fact that a lot of my wounds are skin infections, however, might have something to do with it. (Killing the pus inside the wound with Peroxide is the fastest way I've found to clean out the infections.) That's just my body, though. Maybe others are different. I can't say I recall Peroxide hurting me. Alcohol hurts, especially on rashes, but those painful rashes go away in 48 hours, compared to a 7-10 day healing period without alcohol. I'd rather the overpowering pain of alcohol for 30 seconds than several days of pain. In short, I think it matters quite a bit how you are using antiseptic treatments. Besides, I think a lot of us know you can't trust everything your doctor tells you. They have a financial insentive to convince you to come in so they can charge you some insane amount of money to treat an injury you could easily have treated at home for less than $1.
