- During his interview and Q&A session at BNC#6, renowned South African businessman Christo Wiese addressed the nation's pressing issues and potential pathways for progress. Wiese emphasised the need to address bureaucratic red tape hindering economic growth, advocated for privatisation of state-owned entities, and reflected on the complexities of corruption and justice in the country. Wiese also shared, for the first time, the story of when he first found out about the Steinhoff saga. Despite challenges, he remains cautiously optimistic about South Africa's future, urging proactive citizen engagement and a nuanced approach to governance.

"No one has yet been able to explain to me what is the benefit of not being optimistic." Absolutely nailed it.
A true South-African icon👏👏👏. We really need more positive voices in our country.
Christo Wiese is exactly the type of person South Africa needs to have during these troubling times.
He should have been directly involved with politics, he’s incredibly experienced in all aspects of the very important issues facing South Africa.
If I had to think of a perfect candidate for the ideal South African icon, it would be Christo Wiese.
I truly believe that the older you get, the wiser and smarter you become in making important and meaningful decisions for the future.
Alec, I truly enjoy your insightful and informative discussions, keep up the good work, you are certainly making a difference!

What a man. What a South African 👏

I give Mr Wiese his dues. But he is not untainted. This is the man who enabled Markus Jooste. When Steinhoff went bust he made sure he got back maximum cash, at the ultimate expense of the retail investor who got almost nothing back. If he was such a magninimous philanthropic individual, as he puts himself up to be, he would have said, ok, I gave this crook his credentials, etc., and on my support many financial institutions and advisors invested in Steinhoff, so I will relinguish my rights in favour of the people who can least afford to lose their capital permanently. So, yeah, I am ambivalent to these "captains of industry"
So accurately said
Correct. The only piece of investing advise that I feel comfortable giving to anyone is find out if the stock you're interested in has anything to do with Wiese and if it does, don't touch it. Time and again, Weise has destroyed the value of stocks belonging to common investors while trying to gather more wealth. Like most of the ultra-rich, he cares only about himself and then spins a nice narrative to make himself feel good.
@@leodaly2310 Wow! i never suspected that! One or two examples please?
When you only stay in Stellenbosch and surrounded yourself with like minded and similar look people - he clearly got played and fooled.
Wise old man much respect.
Such a a mature perspective of life what an Oke this man is, first time i see him speak i am impressed he is right "eventuality of the reality will overrun everything"
How did Christo not know what was going on in his company...really... really... the cheques in my mouth bru, I promise!
This is the most informative, brilliant, intellectual and inspiring interview i have ever watched 👏🏻 Dr Wiese will always be a respected and accomplished businessman ⭐
Thanks Alec for posting the follow on questions. Put's their keynote speeches into perspective. Keep it up!
I don’t totally agree with Mr Wiese but his a humble, respectable man!
All we need in society is the ability to disagree with one another, yet remain respectful and constructive with each other.
I wish he can pay his employees a little bit better to reflect his obvious awesome personality that lights up the room.
@@scottwarwick7514 well said.
That's the problem with South Africa. We want to always be in agreement of something. We should agree on things that matter the most e.g. electricity and clean water
This is gold.
This kind of interview and frankness you will hardpressed to get anywhere.
Thank you so much!
We appreciate your optimism, Christo. BTW, we can See and Hear perfectly thanks, having studied SA extensively.
One Firstly needs to understand and accept realities, before planning/dreaming about where one would Prefer to be. Get Real, the SA people are All Disillusioned and/or Disenfranchised man!
A pessimist is nothing but an optimist with experience and their eyes wide Open, still sharing the same shared Dream.
Brilliant interview. Layman's language. Thanks.
Great guy! Uncomplicated and articulate (as the truly intelligent are), pragmatic and proactive.
Our government does not create an enabling environment for business
Old man just told you how complicated this can be. Most white people in South Africa 🇿🇦 are so use to blame government ANC they are even forget that Apartheid has started all this mess we are in and ANC is carrying on doing it because they are bitter and think it’s a right way to get things done right now.
I loved lisrening to the thinking and character of Christo Wiese whose humility and wisdom is testament to his life and business success.
We should be so proud to have people like Christo in South Africa. He lost so much due to corruption but he's still standing. He is a prime example for the rest of us.
4 minutes into the talk, i can already tell the guy is not a liar and very likeable. He is not a poser. Im a black SAn.
I feel the same,he's got an awesome character I just wish he can pay his employees a little bit better to reflect his obvious awesome personality.
But I bet my bottom dollar, he wasn't always like this. All these billionaires and wealthy success stories, are not untainted. They stepped on many toes and engaged in underhanded business tactics decades ago, to become as successful as they are today.
Guys slow down...just cos he's got ooms accent does not mean hy is jou broer ... everything else about uboetie is baei skelem
Steinhoff's story just proves how difficult it is to nail smart people who decide to go rogue. Jooste was an accounting & tax expert who used his talent to defraud everyone.
No wonder the case kept dragging.
I have no trust in PWC nor Deloitte
Very good interview. Wise man giving a lot of life lessons.
Imagine waiting 3 months before building because waiting for plan approval. Costs incurred those 3 months could be devastating
3 years
Christo Wiese playing victim here. He was Markus Jooste's mentor and the largest Steinhoff shareholder in 2014. Did he really not know what was going on behind closed doors, or was he just naive not to ask questions about the business model, as long as the money kept rolling in LOL. Either way, not a role model in my book.
This man is brilliant
I feel like Oom Christo knew everything building up to the Marcus corruption. The is great book written by young Afrikaans guy who was an auditor of Steinhoff for almost 3 years. Marcus was feared by the board
Timely.
This man has the capacity to replace the entire government structure and has more brains than all of them combined.
Wiese for President -defnitly the right person for SA.
A great man is mr wiese.
Property ownership is the basis of wealth creation. Govt must grant title deeds to approx. 7 million blacks who are renting houses. The ANC/EFF alliance does not want to do this as they want to be the guardian of all property and retain political control over black people by not giving them ownership of their houses and thus keeping them poor and dependent on the state.
And now they are going to legislate EWC?
But you can't give poor blacks title deeds because Whites will buy then out of their land. Blacks are struggling economically you know. Malema is smarter than you think.
There are also millions of people who have their own houses in tribal areas who do not have title deeds . For example many Zulus live on grounds for generations that belong to the Umkunyama trust ( belonging to the king ) if these millions were given title deeds that could help them big time ...
7 million😂😂😂 all of us
there are certain people in government who are wanting the "people of south africa"to be totally depended on them thus turning this country into a socialist state.
Christo is a living legend. Speaks with wisdom and confidence. Him, Patrice and Whitey are my favourites.
To all you independent small Business People out there, even the "Big Boys Get it Wrong" so just keep boxing straight!
Wise and humble beyond words - Christo you are incredible - a true optimist who has made a positive difference in so many spheres...we need to clone you!
Interestingly, there are many clones coming through at Wiese companies - check out the eladership at Shoprite; Invicta and others.....
Wonderful to listen to one of the SA and global Captains of Industry
Jooste - “That was a bad miscalculation”
Where the hell is Rob Hersov’s video?
Great interview!
What an awesome interview
So sorry about this news. Condolences to the Jooste family.
fuck condolences, he did that to himself!
SA should be tun by business people
Try something else that lie was sold when Ramaphosa was elected ANC president in 2017.
Which business people? The ones that engage in price fixing, currency manipulation, collusion, tender fraud, accounting fraud etc. The problem is not whether private sector or state should run something. It us about having ethical people in leadership whether business, church, education or state.
LOL
Good question bru👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
It is run by bussiness people, Oppenheimer, Rupert, a handfull of other bussiness people and Wiese himself included.
That Building rule is in place. NBR and Building Standards Act 103 of 1977. Any plan not requiring complicated Architectural design and structure must be approved within 2 weeks if complex design by 1 month. If not, reason in writing by the authority within 2 weeks. There is no willingness, knowledge or leadership plain and simple. I'm shocked on the incompetence in most building control departments in municipalities around SA including most in the Western Cape. Ex Control Office.
Everybody is on the take. If you dont provide the envelope under the table the work will not be allowed to start.
Get more better paid Hawks employed and get the wheel rolling.
The country has been captured by ANC criminals that operate like Russia and other BRICS countries.
Money is power in the right hands. Kobus Wiese we need ypu to get seriously involved.
I like Christo. He is humble. But Mr Wiese if you wrote me a cheque for 60 billion I would turn this economy around just by putting competent, honest, ethical people with the best business skills. It's not easy to find people that can't be bought. But I am one of them and know like minded people.
Elon Musk once said it should take 60% support to bring a law onto the books, but only 40% support to remove it. It's most certainly an oversimplification but speaks to the same concern regarding "red tape"
What a tragedy, stein Müller the company could have been saved, what a miscalculation.
Brilliant Man ❤️
You are taking too long to upload all the speakers.
Christo Wiese is a wise African. We need voices like his to help mentor the youths to develop the continent.
I will never understand why there was NO checks and balance system in place to prevent fraud? It’s called accounting and that means paying attention to details and making sure each and every legitimate transactions are accurately recorded monthly!!
Then if we as the private sector do things for ourselves, nobody is addressing wasted taxes. So we pay taxes and fully fund our own production in industry, One must give, either we pay no taxes and look after everything or they do everything which doesn't work and will never work
Interesting observation
Funny how nobody refer to that as corruption and how it affected Christo what the criminals Markus Jooste and co did and that has happened accross pur private sector in all sectors. Take Glencore, atongaat Hullets etc
Well done you got a lot nolage
I want to meet Mr Wiese... I want to speak to him about empowering idea inn Upington, the place where he started his empire
Wow just shows 😊
Yes look at the ANC all what we doo for SA are no good
And now they are going to legislate EWC!
When you see oomph Christo,s smoking gun,you know the deals been done, he puts his money were the deals are,he takes risk
Politicians or business leaders to lead.......clearly business people. ❤ They also work closely with stats. Business people build on building and so the cup overflows to others....politicians grow and grow their own pockets and tell lies and dont build....God bless SA.
I got it!
Christo is aging well. Last saw him with Bruce Whitefield, I wonder where is Marcus Jooste. My sister want to visit No mens island to visit the likes of Gavin.
Leadership and Management Deficit.
Hahahahah can u all hear me , but we happy to change seats with somebody who cant 😅😅!.....great simple dialogue Thanks biz news
very interesting demographics in the room given that it was shot yesterday as it appears.
A few days later Jooste commits suicide... how did he ever become a CEO with such poor judgement?
My Son and his 2 Friends have started a company in advertising
Sorry Mr Wiese, the Apartheid system worked very well, in fact it was probably the best political policy the world has ever seen, the only problem was, it worked too wel, and we can't have that now, we need democracy.
In retrospect, Markus has been making several miscalculations. May his soul rest in peace.
I hear all this positive talk but all I want is my land back.
My stomach won't get full with positive talk... I want land to work it... GIVE IT TO ME NOW!!
Who owes you land
Without being tone deaf with regard to the past, I must caution you against an attitude of entitlement. EnTITLEment does not lead to title deeds. One should be pressuring the government to create formidable frameworks that BUILD jobs. Education, infrastructure, proper tenders. Entitlement leads to short term solutions that inevitably capitulate (look at most post-colonial states in Africa). I say this without disregarding how shit it is to live below what is dignified. I acknowledge that there are huge injustices here. I’m just saying that expropriation without compensation does not de facto create long term solutions.
@@corneliapeters7877 The farmer! the Boer!
The disingenuity of this:
Asking "why would capital buy up small-scale poor title deeds in Khayelitsha?"
That's like asking why would corporate retail stores open up their branches in Khayelitsha.
*Yet they do.*
Because there's money to be made from the aggregate of millions of people, no matter how low-end the individual unit is.
he's senile. He doesn't even know that Malema has no intention of allowing property ownership by any black. The state will own everything.
Christo Wiese must be perhaps be about the worst Chairman around. How is it possible he or his board knew nothing? Great caretakers for shareholders...
So Wiese is now the guru. He himself is helpless trying to help the helpless…. What an erudite.
Was this a white only audience event or it’s me seeing what it’s not
South Africa pre 94 never had a capitalist system nor a free market system. They had whites only socialism AKA Apartheid
And strangely that 'whites only socialism' provided ALL South Africans Black, White, Asian, with free , world class hospitals; free education; affordable, reliable, accessible and safe transport, housing for the most part, safe living conditions, And as he said: APARTHEID WOULD HAVE DIEBD A SLOW DEATH AND IMPLODED - WE ALL KNOW THAT. And we would have had a working solution, a working, multicultural Country today - had the rest of the World not interfered.
And they now want to finish our country off with their capitalism. It ain't happening!
And now the land thieves don't want us to have socialism with characteristics of ubuntu. They've become wealthier under the ANC.
Beautiful said🔥❤️
❤😂
Jooste was such a coward! But that's what happens with dishonesty. You tend to overstate the consequences and end up making huge incorrect decisions. But I don't understand what Christo Wiese means Jooste "would have been out of jail by now". Weren't the servere to lock him jail for at 15 years🤔🤔🤔
I prefer Whitey Basson to Christo honestly… his dealings with Jooste tell me there is a dark side to Christo… from day one Whitey was wary of Jooste and his sense proved correct while Oum Christo was salivating at prospects of making bags of cash with the criminal Jooste… maybe old age and you lose your touch
Aah, one of the Stealingbosch mafia's on cue. WEF regional protagonist on their spin platform. A Joiner for the older generations. He's not a Boer!

@biko8229 as per the comment above, the government already owns the bulk of the land, so nationalization does not come into it. It's a simple matter of distribution, if the political will existed (which it does not).
