André de Ruyter: More Truth to Power

  • No-one shone a brighter light on the corruption at ESKOM than former CEO André de Ruyter who had to leave South Africa for his own safety. Speaking to BizNews from the United States, he says the corruption at ESKOM continues “by and large unabated” - enabled by the procurement policy in government departments and State-owned entities - and will come to an end only once some of the ringleaders are arrested and properly investigated. He dissects the Government's latest draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), and warns that South Africa will find itself “increasingly isolated from an export perspective” if it does not speed up its decarbonisation efforts. However, he believes South Africa’s problems are solvable with “appropriate political leadership” and policies that attract foreign direct investment that will create jobs and economic growth, and ultimately counteract the “prevailing African stereotype of failure, economic failure and corruption”. De Ruyter also shares his future plans - including his hopes to return home - and reveals the subject of his possible next book. - Chris Steyn

Hi André, From my personal experience during the 45 years I devoted to Eskom, it needs to be said that by keeping up with the required maintence, plant performance could have been kept at an acceptable level, say eaf 75 to 80%. However due political pressure to keep the lights on and cutting costs every year lead to the demise. If I think of all the repairs and replacements that were cancelled or deleted from the technical plans, it was surprising that the plant stll performed as it did. When managers override corporate engineering specialists advice and reports in favour of getting brownie points for saving money on their performance evaluation then there is no hope. Why would good seasoned engineers stay if they get ignored but then get nailed for plant breakdowns that they predicted and reported on. I certainly could not continue in this manner. Thanks for speaking out!

The problem with South Africa is that the ANC think politics is a business, Why would they want to invest in a once off deal that could solve SA power issues when the minister of energy would lose money in his coal business, or fuel in his political business, which both supply eskom. So messed up. give politicians a high salary, but ban them from owning or working on the side

Western Europe has lots of renewables, but these are often idle due to dünkelflaute and load mismatch. They have plenty of nuclear, hydro and LNG and coal back-up as they are so much better at planning and project management.

I have a question for you Andre. If South32 is purchasing or will purchase energy from Koeberg, how is the delivery of that power managed and distributed ? Do they pay them direct and just draw from the grid ? Or do they have a specific “direct line” setup ? Koeberg is very far from Richards Bay. I am very curious to know how this would be implemented?

Managing the grid means managing YOU. Hello 'smart' geysers.
Too many other very clever people out there still saying that 'renewables' aren't meant for baseload and aren't cheaper or better for the environment, lifecycles considered in total. So, who do we believe? What really is the best if incentives and disincentives are removed from the calculations?
As for the EU, they need to be given as many middle fingers as is bareable by all outsiders. Isn't it them who have got the bulk of their fingers in the solar and wind power, so of course they'd like to force other's hands to buy.
Also, CO2 is far better fertiliser than it is a greenhouse gas. So what now?!

I want to know how when can find out how to raise an issue with ESCOM that will result in change for one is just referred to send a WhatsApp and never really gets feedback to my understanding. I stay in a fynbos biosphere in the Overberg region. We have frequent power outages sometimes caused by transformer failures which leads to veldfires in the area where the failure / "blowup" occurs. Surely there must be regulations that those areas surrounding electricity structures should be made fireproof to prevent these devastating veldfires which result from these "blowups".

I think old coal stations can be put to very good use untill such time as new stations come online, they already exist and can generate power much sooner than new ones and then obviously global warming does not exist.

Whether or not global warming exists is a moot point when the companies that want to buy your electricity are striving to prevent it. The first rule of business is that the customer is always right! If you want to woo international investors to your shores you need to give them what they want ;)

Your contributions have been substantial. However, you need to brush up on your renewal energy approach, in terms of life span, costs of installation, maintenance, impact on environment, and when we speak to storage, the rare earth minerals needed for batteries are unsustainable. We should not knock back LPG as an option, as well as more nuclear power stations. Both have a very low carbon footprint compared to coal fired plants
