    As somebody really into harmnoc function it always baffles me how much you can do with broad chords that is completely outside of what works in standard music. This video gave me good insight into what works and why. Thanks.

    Aren't you wonderful! I was listening to Frank Sinatra sing this and thought, that can't be the whole song - it's so short. So I looked around here in space for the full song and stumbled upon you. Just great! Thanks so much. I wish I could play the piano....

      @TonyWinston  Před 5 lety +1

      Agreed, these are charts from the real book....Why is it that classical music has the key signature at the beginning of every line, whereas jazz charts just put it at the beginning? One of life's mysteries I guess.

    I am new to jazz and watch videos like this to try to understand it a bit more. I feel relatively lost in this new musical universe but I would like to know if you have any theory or analysis jazz books that could help a classical pianist learn more about jazz? I know theory pretty well but need ways to practice it more often.. any good book suggestions Anyone?

    Great video, i have a question, if i want to sing the Melody do i still Play It on the right hand ? Or what note can i leave on top.

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  Před 5 lety +1

      Yo! good question . . /. One approach is to just voice lead the chords so they aren't jumping around too much. Then sometimes you'll play a melody note, and sometimes you won't. But in general, if you're singing don't play the melody, but if a chord occasionally doubles the melody, no harm done.

      @@TonyWinston thanks for your reply, such a fantastic arrangement. I just finished my own and yours is a tad more sophisticated but I’m keeping at it. ;-) Anyways, I’m slomo’ing the video and you do play the third! It’s one note under the melody note, the E flat.

    What does it mean when there is another chord written in small above the existing chord on the sheet music? Is it a separate chord for the right hand?

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  Před 4 lety +1

      Alternate chords. Usually jazzier or commonly used substitutions
