This is really great, you covered every step, I’m here because I couldn’t find the select and mask properties panel, then I found it under Window- workspace- Reset Select and Mask. And watching your video gave me a full circle of Select and Mask feature. 👌

ABSOLUTELY ! I'm just about to finally move on from CS5 to the latest version and I have to say, I'm really disappointed in this. MUCH more time-consuming and with results no where near as good as the pen tool!

  • @carolinejackson5167

Yes, but what is the procedure to use that selection? Do you have to have your other pictures all in the same document?

  • @cchemmes-seeseeart3948

I've appreciated Phlearn videos. Most of the time, better explanations are given, rather than just whipping off steps without any sense to what you are doing or why to do it that way. So I came to this video with 1 big question- why would i want to use select & mask? is it the 'standard' way to select/ mask? & trying to get a sense of how it compares to other methods. I was glad this video touched on such issues, but I wished more was said about the 'why/ reason' to use it vs select/ mask without it. The same with the overlay brush? I see what it did, but a bit more explanation would have helped. That is the main thing all resources lack for training in PS- including adobe Helpx user manual. (I'm new to PS, so I am trying to put everything in context, so I can truly learn it. People w/ more experience with it may not have this same need).

Great tutorial. We should be careful with the term "nondestructive" for this process, as anytime we use "decontaminate colors" the source image is permanently modified. Make sure you save to a new layer in that case so a copy of the original image remains in a different layer.
Decontaminate colors is most useful when looking at your image against your new background (as was done in this tutorial, against white).

at around 16:00 in, you mention setting your brush to overlay. For some reason my brush (in Photoshop 2021) does not have an overlay option. It only has 8 total options, with color and luminosity grayed out. Any ideas?

Hello I feel I have known you man and boy in all your manifestations....beard, no beard, long hair...just waiting for the no hair look. However 'select and mask' I am having real problems and I think its a Photoshop bug V22.5.1 in that the new AI powered Refine Hair really screws up the selection and parts that are not selected introducing weird mushy noise. The refine edge brush throws up weird vertical lines of interference when used and produces random results which are not good in both 16 and 8 bit images. My question to you is how come you never experience these problems? everything you do appears to run smoothly. Now I know you have been touched by the Photoshop god but how is it in all your tutorials over the years I have watched you never appear to have encountered any of these problems?
