I am not filming at the level expected in feature films, but I have more than 1100 videos posted on YT and the iPhone is all around the best for my needs as a creator. Good video, I enjoyed it.😎🤙

    I really struggled, because of quick transitions, but it really struck me that the close ups were sharp and great colours and I didn't feel there was significant differences in most of the shots - I'm impressed, but I also suspect the ARRI is much more flexible for different lighting conditions.

    I use iPhones and Sony Cine line cameras regularly, so for me the iPhone stood out pretty well for me in each clip. As others have commented, over-sharpened images, stabilization/color differences, etc, are a dead giveaway for someone with a trained eye; that being said, if you didn't know what you were looking for you'd probably miss it unless you really took the time with comparisons.
    I will admit to having done pick-up shots and emergency shots with an iPhone 14 Pro, and nobody (paying clients and youtube subscribers alike) has ever mentioned to me any noticeable difference (I do shoot in prores with an ND filter and use Protake/FilmicPro, for full disclosure).
    It is indeed pretty rad that we're at a point in time where you really don't need anything but the phone in your pocket and a little technique and knowledge to make some great work.

    Actually Arri does have kinda computational DR in the sense that it has a separate photosite readout in the sensor for just capturing the highlights info and a separate photosite readout that just capture the mids and shadows which then gets stiched up into a 16 bit file image that's why you get those crazy highlight rolls offs, its called a dual gain architecture something that the Canon C70 has adopted as well.

I was on the fence because I was getting gorgeous footage from my 15 Pro Max and was concerned that due to lack of bokeh you get from pro cameras that my footage wasn't 'professional' enough. But with the Blackmagic Camera App, shooting in log, using tele photo lens attachments and/or getting close enough to my subject to get nice DOF... not to mention getting about 75% of my guesses wrong with respect to Arri vs iPhone despite knowing enough about cinematography... made me feel so relieved that I can continue to work with my current setup until I can afford an upgrade. It’s crazy, even as a filmmaker it was nearly impossible to tell on the first watch, if you don’t look up closely. As watching it on a smartphone in vertical mode has not much sceeenspace and it’s also a fast editing style. For sure if you want to see it you will find some feature that will tell you which is which especially in challenging shots. But as it’s daytime with good light the iPhone is performing very well. It’s absolutely mind blowing how well they’re matching for a format like CZcams or social media in general. 🙌🏾 What a fun matchup. Even tho speaking of shooting logistics the iPhone is for sure no competitor for an ARRI. But the specific marked phone cameras are targeting its mind blowing powerful.

    Hey Matii!
    -I'm also a almost begginer cinematographer, and i've been experimenting with footage and videos these months. I've learnt a lot of stuff back in, such as, lenses, focal length, bokeh and more stuff. It's been a large journey till this day but i'm still keeping up. I'm not also interested into filmmaking career, i also want to study optics. And that's why i'm really in to this world. And i tell you, i can spot the difference, let me tell you.
    -I can say (with all my skills that i've learnt for the past months) i can spot the difference. One of the differences that i see is with the color. Arri has lie a more advanced color than the iPhone, but still both of them are good in that. Also because the Arri has more colors going on (16 bit) than the iPhone.
    -Another difference i can spot is the Bokeh. I know both have already lenses with the same adjustments in them, but i can really see the bokeh on him. Arri's one, is far cleaner and smoother than iPhone one. I can notice this because i'm a iPhone user, and i've been using it's good camera, and i've seen it's Bokeh many times. So yeah.
    -I might be wrong in this one but, Arri has more quality than the iPhone, but in this situation, you might have set that in to the same quality as the iPhone, but yeah. That's pretty much it.
    I love your videos man, this is real content for me!
    Thanks.

It is comparing apples and oranges where you take a bite of either and it is juicy and delicious. The difference is the usability, the adaptability, and reliability of a professional camera. Amazing. I think, outside of dof and the softness of the Arri cam, without context, probably almost everyone wouldn't question whether or not it's an iphone film or something else. There are many tools that can be used to make your shots look like that of an expensive dedicated cinema cam. Imagine having pros in their respective fields (DP's, editors, Directors, colorists), with all the right tools, shooting in all the right scenarios, shoot a film without any context. I doubt most people could clearly say that it was shot on an iphone. You may have a few, but the majority of movie watching people, who don't care what you shot it on and only want to see a good film, would absolutely not know. Great shots, by the way. Xiaomi has wider aperture cameras with their Leica smartphone camera, but otherwise all phones have this problem, and this is the next challenge that will need to be solved. Until then you have to shoot in a different way with smartphones to get depth of field in some close up shots and give the illusion of that cinematic blur.

    As someone who makes a lot of wild videos, I’m a big fan of the iPhone. No color grading, and when paired with a good microphone the iPhone is 90% correct 100% of the time. My Sony cameras require some skill that I am slowly learning, but have occasionally left me with poor filmed to low skill level. So, if I need to make sure I get it right in one take, it’s the iPhone.

In the whole clips sequence I just kept thinking, no one outside of technical folks would know the difference, especially with such closely matched color. A few gimmies on dynamic range, DOF, and the like. But again, not that the iPhone is bad, it isn't. The Arri is just really that good. Definitely could see an iPhone as an enter camera, frequent b-roll or action type cam. etc.

  • @Linealo
    @Linealo Před 11 měsíci

    The ARRI, despite grading, always had a more "flat" look to. The typical "cinematic" soft, high-DR, nice roll-off and slightly lifted blacks look. The iPhone always looked punchy and a tack sharper in the sense of everything being processed. The iPhone also looked more stable, as it´s OIS properly is going crazy, while the heavy ARRI has to be stabilized in post or externally.
    In the end, the iPhone had some really good quality here - especially if we consider the new ProRes Log. It is definetly A LOT better than phone cameras were just a few years ago and even a tad better I´d say in the "regular" use cases (around the 38-70mm range) than popular cameras like an A7iii or the like. Simply because the iPhone can push 10bit at 4K60 with LOG and in a relatively uncompressed format. Cameras like said A7iii from just 2018 only can do 8bit at up to 4K30 with 100MBps and then also crop, lineskip or do whatever other things to get a better image - and then are prone to overexposure when you have to +2exp your LOG.
    So long story short: Cameras have mighty advantages, especially the more edge case the use cases get (wide / telephoto) and the more difficult the light gets. The iPhone totally get´s 80% of the way there in 80% of usecases for 80% of the people (80/20 rule being strong here). So yes, I cansee a difference, but if I didn´t knew it was shot on two cameras, I´d only would have guessed it was inconsistent grading with most clips and only seldom would have guessed that it was two separate cameras.

    You can instantly tell. It's the digital sharpness of the iPhone that most gives it away. This sharpness is a huge detractor in even professional cameras deemed "Cinema. Yes, I'm looking at you Sony.
    There is also muddy chrominance in the iPhone footage, which is to be expected from 4:2:0 vs the 4:4:4 of the Alexa, however many people can't even decern that physically, especially in motion.
    That being said, with proper post know how and technique, you can mitigate that edge sharpness without globally losing detail. I'm not giving that secret sauce away. 😊
    The question isn't "Is the Alexa a better aquisition than any smartphone?" (we seem to frequently forget the other smartphone manufacturers, eh hem) the real question is,"Is the Alexa IMAGE really $97,000 better than a smartphone?" I think if you're a reasonable person working in the small to zero budget industry, the answer can only be a resounding hell no. Be an intelligent person and save that $97k for your investment portfolio should you make it to retirement age.
    Spending $100k for a camera for CZcams? Really? I don't think this video is highlighting what you think it highlights.

  • @andrewdickson1556
    @andrewdickson1556 Před 11 měsíci +1

    It's the sharpening of certain textures like the beard that give it away. In wide shots with a good colour grade I think it's less easy to tell, like you would have to pause and take a look at highlight roll off or something, but when you're in close up you can see how the arri has this slightly dreamier buttery smooth image but still with all the detail, whereas the details in the phone footage look exaggerated. I imagine with a refinement of apple log, and a little bit of techno-wizardry the images could be even closer. Of course the iPhone has huge limitations as a professional tool but the reality is, if you work within those limitations, you can create great looking footage that would not look like it came from a phone. Wonder what the 16pro cameras will be like??

    Its honestly scary because many companies (especially smaller ones) will have a hard time justifying paying more and think "can't I just use an iphone?" ; heck a lot already do. The problem is that I've seen social media managers use their iphones and it looks like crap cause they don't have editing skills, know how to use the software apart from some crappy iphone app that screws up the frame rate, but the bosses will be like 'oh that looks good." Yet they can't understand why they aren't hitting high viewership and engagement on social media. I'm not saying you can't be successful with an iphone, but the problem is that you really need either a videographer or a social media manager with the experience to show that they can do more than just hit record.

Obviously, for a big production, you want the consistency, like you said, but for amateur filmmakers, the tools available to them in their own pockets are outrageous.

  • @melgross
    @melgross Před 11 měsíci

    As far as the computation goes, it’s not the size of the sensor. It’s the resolution of the sensor. 4k is doable with a 3:2 12MP sensor after all, not using all the pixels. It’s just that Apple has gone after this in a big way. It’s their experience designing high performance SoCs that allows it. And this year, the A17 Pro has doubled the Neural Engine to 35 teraflops. Much of what’s being done by them these days is not being done in the CPU, and not all in the GPU, but in the Neural Engine and ISP and hardware for ProRez and the other standards. That’s going to be tough to catch up with.
    I hope Apple gives time code next year. They don’t have manual exposure control for log in their app, but Blackmagic does in theirs. It’s going to be interesting if Apple also gives the rumored 48MP sensor in the ultra wide too.

    While it may give you great looking imagary, people have no idea what they're actually doing (the phone is doing it for them) and they don't learn it either. Give people a basic manual camera and let them make something that looks good. That's how they learn.
