    there was so many great races and great pacers for so long WA was blessed but surely no horse had the heart, guts and wanting to win the Pure Steel bought tears to my eyes. Poor Satinover was never quite the same horse again.

    Pure Steel would have to have been the gutsiest and toughest pacer ever seen in Australia. His never say die will to win, won him many races. He was an exciting horse to watch. His win in the 1978 A G Hunter Cup when he absolutely demoralized a great field after racing outside Rip Van Winkle for most of the race was his toughest win. The amount of times he caused me to get goosebumps with his sheer guts and will to win will stay with me forever.

      Because all races are fixed or rigged until they put slot machines into the racetrack. Then they race honest races after that. Anyone who can't make a living betting honest races should never go to the racetracks in the first place.

    I didn't see the Great Mt Eden or the Legend Polly Farmer saw Footage of them but not Live. But the Greatest Sporting Event ever held in W.A was this Match Race between 2 Champion Horses and 2 Champion Reinsman. But what made the Race more Spine Tingling and an Adrenaline Rush was the call of the Great George Griljusich. I still get Goosebumps watching this 2day.

      I was there and still get emotional about the race every time I watch it. I was standing on the hand rails leading into the upper area so I could see the race - I'm 6'3" tall. I was a PS fan and I was screaming "kill the #@$%^ kill the #@$%^". Greatest race I have seen. Near flat to the board for the last 1000m. PS had to cover 9m more every corner. I believe they raced for $60,000.

      I was a regular at Greenwood Race Track in Toronto, Canada for forty years before it closed. I was also 6 time world pinball champion so all the lucky people also got to see me play pinball at the racetrack and at the Orchard Park Tavern directly across the street. It was my idea to name some of the newer streets in Stouffville Ontario after Cam Fella. Yeah, I watch the best of the best throughout all the years, every two and three year old world champion. They built B tracks like Orangeville and Barrie raceway for goats like Pure Steel... one step away from the glue factory.

    Pure Steel broke Satinover's heart this night. Satinover had won 19 in a row prior to the match race. Satinover only won 2 of its following 13 starts. A great time for the sport with Rip, Paleface,Steelo and Marko keeping the turnstiles clicking. A couple of years later it was Poppy and Gamma. Harness racing will never see these heights again.

    • @marknorris1381
      @marknorris1381 Před 2 lety +1

      'Broke his heart' is just a myth. They just couldn't get the horse right after this. And Satinover was sweated up from what I can see in this - I also remember watching it on ABC TV at the time, that's how great the interest was. He accounted for Pure Steel in their only meeting before this - not taking anything away from Pure Steel an out and out great champion arguably the best stayer to race in Australia but Satinover by no stretch had a hard run in this that would 'break a horses heart'. When they had the horse right he was razor sharp, almost impossible to beat, as per his winning streak when he was firing on all cylinders.

      Being from the States, I didnt know Mount Eden was that good, I have been told by others as well. I know there was a plan for Eden to come to the US and race against Albatross, but Eden had tied up and almost died at that time.. then I heard later in 1980- the owner of" Pure Steel" wanted to come to United States which would have been great, because I think he could have held his own- but that was also the Golden Age of harness racing here as well with Niatross and then Cam Fella, burning up everyone.
      No doubt in my mind the ANZ horses have closed the gap and I see them here winning race after race.

John Tapp has a web site in which he tells us about his trip to Tazzy to see Halwes ( he did in 1987} . He described what his driver said about Halwes.. he said good horses can go twice in a race, but a Halwes could go three times and hold the final sprint by either zooming home, or simply breaking the heart of top flight horses, one against Voice Derby, an exceptional horse. Halwes came from 36 to win.. just superb

Not that they were great trotters,but, certainly a great raceoff,I was privileged to witness live! Everyone was a winner! It took over a year to agree on how to fairly divide the giant purse money,with both sides having good points as to who should declared the best that day,as it had never happened before in the rich history of this event,& will probably never happen again! Both of these classy gentlemen drivers held each others hand,high in victory,after the race! Maybe they should just stick to the Pacers down under,as they always have!
