1965-1966 Television Season 50th Anniversary Tribute: Gidget and Sally Field

  • Fifty years ago today, April 21, 1966, the final episode of Gidget aired on ABC television. Debuting on September 15, 1965, Gidget would run for just one season, but would go on to legendary status, primarily on the high energy, success and talent of the show's young star, Sally Field.
    This video clip contains a fine interview with Ms. Field, and is a part of the extras on the Gidget DVD package, which comes highly recommended. The show can also be seen on cable TV each Sunday morning on Antenna TV (check local listing for time zone specifics). Check your Amazon or B&N source for DVD ordering information.
    The show is very much a charming slice of mid 1960s teenage nostalgia, and unlike the movie versions of Gidget, this TV version focused much more on the father-daughter relationship, and with great success. The chemistry between Don Porter, who played Professor Russell Lawrence, and Sally Field as Francis Elizabeth Lawrence (aka Gidget) was priceless.
    Enjoy - Gidget provides that wonderful opportunity to enjoy a time when the surt was always up, and every day seemed like an endless summer.
    This video clip is presented here on CZcams for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended.

    In Pieces is her wonderful 2018 autobiography. Read it if you think highly of Sally and her work. I grew up watching tv in the 60"s. Sally grew into a very fine actor, after the tv stardom at such a young age.

    I have always loved Sally Field in all of her roles. I also read her memoir, "In Pieces" and didn't believe it was so horrible. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about her life.

      I read that book. It gave me another layer of respect for her! I also fell in love with her show. It's a bit odd in that it was trying to create a character with some depth, but was too little too late. The show really deserved another season, but It was cancelled before it caught on in syndicate.

    Loved her hair! My hair was curly, which I love now but hated then. Her personality was adorable and endearing.

    Sally still is one of the most attractive and beautiful women. I bought few Gidget DVDs some yrs ago because it never was aired here in Finland. The same with Gilligan Island. I don’t know why. We had Jet Jackson (Captain Midnight) which was my favorite #1. Also Sea Hunt, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Bat Masterson, Wagon Train, Bonanza, Batman, Agent 86, Peyton Place, Naked City, The Untouchables, Dennis the Menace (who was just like me), Higway Patrol, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Munsters, Dr. Kildare (me and my dad watched), Ben Casey (my mom watched), Invaders, The Outer Limits etc. etc. Those were the days!

      "Places in the Heart" and

    I always used to say that if I had a daughter that I would name her Sally after my favorite actress Sally Field. I never married though and all I have is one niece and four nephews. I read Sally's biography and her home life was really rough. No spoilers for people who haven't read it yet. You'll just have to buy it or borrow it at the library.

    Nobody can play Gidget as well as Sally Fields did a lot of people take my age in the year I was born for granted by the way to today because I'm only 32 and I was born in February 28th 1990 but I grew up with all these old TV shows like gidget just like my own parents did I also did watch the more newer stuff of my time but I mostly watched a lot of the old stuff and I prefer this kind of stuff over my own generation of movies and shows

    Was it Gidget who would say "well" when asked a difficult question? If not, does anyone know which character she play when she said that?

    • @TelevisionVanguard
      @TelevisionVanguard  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you for watching and for the question Mike. Gidget may have said 'well' from time to time... we think we said 'groovy' and other mid-1960s hip vocabulary as well.... classic! However, the person we think said 'well' (weelllll) often was none other than Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) on Bewitched. We think you may be thinking of the wonderful Bewitched. - Television Vanguard staff

      Hello - thank you for watching. The reason we often have brief clips of various programming is due to licensing issues... licensed music that appears on television programming, the full programs themselves and so forth, we cannot show here due to copyright infringement. In the case of this series, Gidget, there is a wonderful DVD package available on Amazon or B&N. We hope you continue watching our channel and find both entertainment and good information in the video clips. Thanks again, Television Vanguard staff
