      @@KneeJerkReactions13 The difference is, they wanted to do it on their own terms. They didn’t wanna make the same album three times in a row, they wanted to evolve the sound, change their sound and be who they were going to be as artists.
      In 1977 after the song “Rich Girl“ became a hit, RCA wanted them to come back with more of the same. Daryl didn’t want to do that, and as a result, singles that should’ve been hits on the 3 following albums did not score big hits, partially because the record company didn’t make them a priority to promote to radio, because H&O didn’t want to listen to what they wanted them to do. The boys ended up being right.

    This song holds the distinction of being the most "Sampled" Song in Music. That basically means as you know that folks have taken snippets for their own hit. Simply Red "Sampled" this Song for Sunrise. If you can check out Daryl Hall's Solo Work like "I'm In A Philly Mood" and "Dreamtime". They were at their peak but the music changed and try as they might they couldn't keep up. Also check out Live From Daryl's House where he does amazing collaborations and duets with folks.

    Sara Smile...Rich girl

  • @sean4339
    @sean4339 Před 4 lety +3

    Explained Oates, "That song is really about not being pushed around by big labels, managers, and agents and being told what to do, and being true to yourself creatively. Calling it "typical of a lot of the lyrics we’ve written over the years," he added, "It seems like it’s about one thing, but it’s really not. What we have always tried to do, and if we have any kind of philosophy for our lyrics over the years, it was to try to take a universal subject and somehow make it seem personal so that people could relate to it as if it was a personal thing."
    Oates, who also recently disclosed that Hall & Oates' 'Rich Girl' isn't actually about a girl, went on to reveal that although it seems to be about a predatory woman, the duo's 1982 smash 'Maneater' was really written about New York City. "‘Maneater’ is about NYC in the ’80s," he explained. "It’s about greed, avarice, and spoiled riches. But we have it in the setting of a girl because it’s more relatable. It’s something that people can understand. That’s what we do all of the time."
    Oates is currently out promoting his latest solo release, 'Good Road to Follow,' which bundles his recent series of digital singles into a triple-EP package of 15 songs. "This project has been a labor of love," Oates says of the album, which found him working with country legend Vince Gill, OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, and many others. "Almost every song was recorded with a different producer and a different co-writer, so I got to step into the worlds of so many creative and inspiring people. Some of whom I have worked with in the past and some folks that I’d never met. I reached out to the songwriters, musicians and producers that I respect and asked them if they would work with me on one individual song. Each song became an intense and focused creative experience...it was a pure collaboration from beginning to end."

    Hall and Oates doesn't get enough credit for some of the best music produced during the 1980"s. They had a rythm and sound that was so unique. I loved their 1981 Album, Private eyes, and practically wore the shit out of it. Those were the days of cassettes. All time favorite top 5 bands. My favorite happens to be their first hit - She’s Gone.
    Smooth R&B! Soo damn good! They were unknown, no videos at that time, all thought they were black, lol.
    Saw them 3 yrs ago and they are still amazing, voices still strong, its like they haven’t aged.

    One of the best concerts I ever went to was a Hall and Oates concert. Two plus hours, all them. Awesome.

    Daryl will be 75 this year. John is 74. Both great singers even now. Lots of solo albums. Recording new album right now as Hall and Oates all new material.

    Love Hall & Oates music. Great reaction. And I loved your interpretation. That never occurred to me, that it could be about drawing the line in the music industry. That's awesome!

    They learned their craft in Philadelphia at the feet of the Temptations. When you hear the term blue eyed soul, Hall and Oates is all that.

  • @laminage
    @laminage Před 4 lety

    Yes, Philadelphia has produced some amazing Blue Eyed Soul Singers. Besides them, there was Len Barry (123), Karen Young (Hot Shot). Len was also in The Dovells (Bristoll Stomp & You Can't Do That) as well as The Newbeats (Bread & Butter). It is the most sampled song in Pop Music along with I Can't Wait by Nu Schooz. Check it out of you can. Sara Allen was Daryl's Ex Girlfriend who was the inspiration for Sara Smile that Daryl wrote for her. She and her Late Sister Jana also co wrote Kiss On My List amongst other. She never bought any attention to herself. When they were Interviewed in 16 Magazine the Old School Teen Magazine Daryl just said she helped them Co Write Their Songs. Spandau Ballet also sampled this Song for "Sunrise". Also Daryl made his Bones in a Group called The Temptones named after his Alma Mater Temple University. He also worked with Kenny Gamble who along with Leon Huff helped shape the Philly Soul Sound. The funniest co incidence is that Daryl & John met in an Elevator as did Kenny and Leon. Also keep in mind that The Music of Philly is just as popular in England since so many Recording Artists do Covers of Their Songs. Boy Bands/Girl Groups, Reality Show Contestants etc even TV Shows.

    1:08. DAMN SKIPPY that how we walked around back in the day.. And YEA I hear your tingly bits!
    I had to roundhouse the ladies with my fly 80's strut!
    And YEA, I had a sax thrown over my shoulder!
    Don't make me bust out a sax solo, because it can be arranged!

    Hall & Oates and Michael McDonald are two of the very few white artists played on the famous smooth jazz/R&B radio station WBLS-FM in NYC. They’re just that smooth. Nice guys too!
