I'm 6'6" at 250 pounds and last time I ran a mile it was a 8:56 time. I PR'd my 5k according to Strava yesterday (33:32) and ended with a torn up heel. I used that as my reasoning to buy a new pair of Hoka's. I'm excited to see how they help me keep improving.
Update: After backpacking 15 miles this weekend w/ a 35lb pack, I weighed in around 246. My new shoes arrived today so I put them on and ran a 5k over lunch. New 5k PR of 30m58s! (and a new 2 mile PR).

Appreciate you being openly OK about not (yet!) matching your old results. I usually chase my PBs at every running race, but after a recent injury and a mental "wobble" I'd like to take the pressure away and just enjoy my runs again. Hopefully it'll help me focus more on my work, which has been distinctly lacking recently. There's a bit of guilt about losing the fitness I've worked hard to build up, and the worry that I might not get it back later, but this video gives me confidence that it's a natural thing to do. Good luck for Hyrox, then your 200 mi cycle, then your ultra... one thing at a time, I like the sound of that!

Congratulations, Mark, on your great time! It's good to see that at this age and weight, you can still achieve such results. I have been running for a year now because exactly on May 21, 2022, I quit smoking. I am now 42 years old, and since February of this year (2023), I have been going to the gym about 4 times a week. As a result, I have gained about 8kg and now weigh 92kg at 187cm. My running records are 1 mile - 6:06, 5k - 19:51, Half-Marathon - 1:40:58, Marathon - 4:00:44. I must admit that I didn't know what types of running shoes there are. I am currently waiting for the "base" running shoes that I ordered, which have a very thick sole. Due to frequent running, approximately 1500km in a year, I have three damaged toenails. They turned black and bled, but I'm glad it only ended up being something like that and not a fracture or knee injury. Maybe you can make an episode about different types of shoes for different training purposes. I'm also very curious about the episode where you ran a sub 42-minute 10k. What did you eat for that? Best regards, Kuba.

Nice attempt Mark. I started doing Parkruns - in the Netherlands where I live - because of your great content about that! Didn't know about it before that...
I did my first Barefoot Parkrun last Saturday, and it was a PB; first sub20 at 19:48. Also first place; still a small and new Parkrun.
My cadence has never been that high - 193 average - because of being barefoot and that high speed combined.
I noticed that your cadence began at 178 and lowered after the first round, slowly going towards 170. I believe there the gain is to be taken!
The more cushioned shoes I wear - I 'lived' 2,5 years totally barefoot - the lower my cadence gets. It takes a lot of effort to change that; to go against it sort of...

A great effort. My best official time on a road mile is 5.40 though I did manage 5.31 on a track time trial during the lock down in 2020. Must sign up to some mile races over the summer. Miles I find are painful but very satisfying when you nail a good time. Have always wanted to do a timed mile on track in spikes but a bit wary as have had some trouble with my Achilles in recent years.

      @kalvin. Před rokem +2

I find the mile and 5K similarly painful, but one is much shorter than the other. Maybe I’m not working as hard as I could in the mile, but I feel like the 5K makes everything hurt, while the mile hurts but I can only do so much “damage” with such a short distance relatively.

I’m impressed, I’m 5 years younger and 20kg lighter than you and run a sub-19 5k, but recently only managed a 5:55 mile (on a grass track) recently

When your pushing your top end speed 5k and a mile are very different for most people who aren't professionals.

Hey Mark, shame you didn't try this tomorrow night as Reading Roadrunners are doing some 1-mile races at Palmer Park at 1830. They run these events fairly regularly from 1-mile to 5k, would be good to see you down there sometime.

    • @MarkLewisfitness

I need to look into that. I want to try a 5k on a track and figure doing it in a race style would be fun!

Well done, Mark. I too was mucking about 13 years ago (and I was the same age you are now) as part of my marathon training when I did an identical event on our local track and managed a 5:16, albeit I’m not as well built as you. Could I have gone sub 5 min for the mile? I doubt it…maybe close had I trained more purposefully but I quite enjoy those snacks too.

  • @rasmusottokristensen2039

It looks like you can open up the hip a bit. just lean back a bit (the leaning forward, should come from the ankles, not the back), so you feel a balanced effort from the hipflexers, lower abs and posterior chain. Lift your knees, like you do the first minute. If you do this, you will increase your stride length and get faster for almost the same effort. Love your content, best of luck with up coming events.

Seeing as you’re at Palmer Park there, maybe you should try velodrome bike racing. They have beginner training and then a track league there. It’s really good and makes a good new challenge.

5m 22s is seriously good for tour frame and age. I'm the same age as you, but 170lb, and my best mile is 5m 27s. I'm also shooting for the golden 5. What's your best 400? Mines 65.5. Opinions vary on whether that can translate to a 5min mile. But I'm working on the 400 too. Good luck to both of us!

It's going to be very tough Mark I've done a 5:03. I've never really gave it a proper go but it frightened me. I've done a 5k pb in 17:06 and 10k in 35:57. Will be interesting to see if you can do it.
