this is my local track. i live in Sawley. i've done many trackdays here on my R1 that i've owned for 20yrs now. we're old mates, me and me old R1. it's an absolute honour to ride here knowing legends like Barry have diced here too. riding in those very tyre tracks of Korky, Barry, Roger, Mick, Graeme Crosby, Ron, et al. the roll call goes on forever. legendary track, legendary names, donno park. love it.
When you say 'Old Yamaha R1' You Gotta Think WTF happen to All those Years, the 1st R1' came out in 1998 & Can Sometimes seem like Yesterday & Other Times like an Alternative Universe Pre Mobile Internet Days!! -Cheers😆👍🇦🇺
1100cc v 500cc though! Surprisingly though, I would have thought he would be quicker down the straights with the weight making him a little slower in the bends? But that didn't seem to be the case?
The first year I went to Donington aged 15, even better as it was free if you were under 16! Went to all the meetings in those days as there were some great riders and far more exciting racing with the strokers against the big fours. Great watching Gardner on his flat barred Moriwaki that season against the works Yams.Went in1984 for the transatlantic meeting on my own bike and sat near Bazza and Stephanie in the pit lane and managed to get Graeme Crosby's autograph along with King Kenny and Mike Baldwin. Great days even though I did seize my bike on the way there! Luckily it was my local track so did not have far to get home.
I bet Sheene enjoyed that one. I don't know if he changed his riding style significantly after he left Suzuki but he looked so much neater and more comfortable on the Yamaha's. No-one watching this at the time would have bet against him winning another world title.
Young man the Suzuki was full of mechanical problems especially with the gear box the Yamaha all ways reliable and always faster from 10 to 12 miles faster
If it was not for his bad accident the following season at Silverstone maybe he would have, as he had just got the works v-four like Kenny Roberts and would have been even quicker but sadly things were not to be, and I should think he was just glad to be still alive after having his legs bolted back together.
@@parisstromatias637 Hey, thanks for the "young man" thing . . . I'm 64-y-o. I used to work with the late great 2-stroke engine builder Roger Keen who built my engines when I raced TZ350's. He built 'customer' RG500's for most of the top uk 500 riders including Steve Parish and I never hard him mention gearbox issues - at least not on the ones that he built - but there's no doubt the Yamahas at that time were a step ahead, especially on handling and, as you say, on top speed. Roger described riding his RG as like "wrestling a fu - - ing fast sofa". (I rode round the outside of him on a 'bend' at an airfield circuit in Norfolk. He rode away, I bounced down the track for about 100 yards and ended up in a carrot field with a lot of broken bits!)

Rossi also road the old 500cc 2 stroke bikes he is the only rider to have been in both classes and still riding so he did ride the pre-electronic bike.
@@CADS1968 Rossi did win in 2001 on the NSR500 Honda and has always been class, but Spencer won both the 250 and 500 titles in 1985 riding both races on the same day which even Rossi has never achieved. Would have been great to see Rossi against Doohan,Gardner,Schwantz,Mamola,Rainey,Roberts and Sheene no question.

Sheene was really on form that day. so was Crosby. 2 of most popular guys of that era, and talented! The good old days
