    I think feynman lectures on physics 3 volumes are enough to understand some of the basic principles.you donot need these books.but if you are a physics major then of course u can go through those books.otherwise you will get discouraged by them.i am a phy major believe me,feynman lectures in physics are a great place to start,even before resnick and haliday.feynman will motivated u place to place in his books,you will start liking the subject,and he constantly criticized the people who present physics as a hard subject.

    Yes astrophysics is easier than quantum mechanics but it is no piece of cake for a grand unified theory we need to work on it from both the fonts so astrophysics is also very important

    sir i am an mbbs student and i am deeply inspired by math and physics. I've always loved quantum mechanics taught in class 12... I want to start from scratch learning and solving the books you recommended.... but managing it with my hectic mbbs schedule, it is going to be very tough.     "Calculating the Cosmos" by Ian Stewart.
    "PBS Space Time" CZcams channel is a great introduction to concepts and interesting quirks of Quantum Theories.
    Leonard Susskind has written a book series called The Theoretical Minimum for amateurs to understand Modern Physics without deleting the maths :
    1) Classical Mechanics
    2) Quantum Mechanics
    3) Special Relativity and Field Theory
    4) General Relativity (upcoming)

    Before reading all this first read modren physics by Arthur Beiser, if you need to explore more than read it again. This book make you curious and inspire enough to read and understand landu or schaum series. The books suggested by him will not help you to clear any competitive exam in india. Off course those are great books for research and particular for master and PhD curriculum.
    Yes to clear compititive exam one needs to understand fundamentals, I feel BSc books of B. S. Agarwal are great to understand concept and clear exam as well. Griffth for electrodynamics. Zettile for Quantum are great.
