  • Today we visit the Black Hills Central railroad, to witness one of the rarest events since the end of steam. Two articulated locomotives, double heading over the steep grades of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The railroad wanted to celebrate the recent completion of #108 with a special event. The #108 had not run since the 1950's and was restored earlier this year.
    These powerful, smaller, articulated locomotives were built primary for the logging industry by the Baldwin Locomotive Company in the 1920's. Bad track, steep grades, and tight curves made these locomotives ideal for the mountains of Oregon and Washington. These were good and reliable locomotives serving right until the end of steam and beyond. The short passenger train in the video makes light work for the two steam engines.
    These locomotives are compound steam engines, which means the steam is first used in the rear cylinders, then piped up to the front cylinders. Since the steam in used twice the front cylinders are much larger. Due to the small driving wheels these locomotives are very powerful but can not travel very fast.
    This was a difficult video to film and edit as the weather was constantly changing from bright sun to dark and overcast. For more information on the locomotives, rolling stock, train rides, and history click link here www.1880train....

    Good for the Black Hills Central for bringing another articulated back to life and double-heading it, and good for you for capturing the event so well. Thumbs Up!

    Great video. This is my favorite excursion railroad and #110 is one of my favorite steamers. I loved being able to ride behind both of them.

    Way back in the 1970's I owned an HO version of what was nearly identical to No. 108. Selling it was one of my biggest regrets ever. It once pulled 23 scale weighted cars and a caboose, with almost no effort. The 23rd car was a bit to much though. Great model, great engines, great video.

    Talk about a power packed combo. That's enough torque to move Mount Rushmore! Thanks for this most excellent video. Professional job. These are two of the most appealing locomotives in the world to watch. What an impressive show!

    Great video! Some of those passenger cars are from the old Oregon Electric Railway (OE) that once ran from Portland, Oregon to Eugene, Oregon. The OE is now part of BNSF Railway track that went to Portland and Western Railroad (PNWR).

    1:12 Is 7 still serviceable? Last time she ran was in 2003 I believe, she's not been running for 17 years now, I sure do hope we can see her in action again one day alongside the mallets

    • @travelingtom923
      @travelingtom923  Před 3 lety

      From what I heard it could only pull four cars up the steep grade and they usually run seven. So unlikely it will ever run again on that line. It could be sold to another railroad. It's a good looking locomotive.

      @@shanewalters4171 You are welcome. Now that they have two operating steam locomotives it will be more likely they would be willing to sell it. Would be good to see it running again.
