Every journey is different and this is what I've learned from my experience of having clinical in a hospital setting, while also getting a career in many outpatient/ doctors offices and in many different hospitals after graduating.

Thanks for speaking to the subject of being a people person, this is SO important! It is something that I really worked on with our interns when I was clinical instructing. For some it comes naturally for others they will need to develop the skill, if you don't like taking to people of touching and getting close to them Sonography will be a stuggle. If you are able to communicate with the patient well, you learn so much more about what you really need to be on the look out for than what just shows up on the ordering diagnosis, Plus when our patient leaves they will feel like maybe someone does care about them and their wellbeing.
Yesss, Michele you nailed it. Some people don’t have the bedside manner it takes to do this job and it hurts them in the long run. People can develop the skill, you’re right!! But people with experience in customer service or even the server industry I feel like will do great because you have to be personable and able to speak to them!!! Here’s to not being afraid!! Wish I would’ve had something like this when I decided to go into ultrasound bc I wasn’t 100% sure. It soon became my passion & I am now a “seasoned” tech, so I was blessed. Thanks for making these videos! Maybe you can make one on how to survive graveyard shifts? I just transferred from outpatient to overnight ED & start nights in Oct. Have never worked overnight before so I’m a lil nervous. Lol.
I also do too!! Haha, hopefully I can help a bunch of people decide if it is or isn’t for them. But yes, I feel like passion/ motivation is a MUST to be a great sonographer. I’m so happy to hear that happened to you!!!
And ahhh that’s exciting... overnight ED though can be challenging but also has its pros over the day shifts (most of the time you don’t do any procedures or deal with so many doctors and most nurses are more chill), but you’ll do great just make sure you get enough sleep as you can cause transitioning will be hard on your body!!! You got this tho! All our graveyard techs love it! So I’ll definitely touch on that in a future video! Don’t be nervous, you’re a great tech & you’ll do amazing!

I just found your channel and so far it’s been very helpful! I’m 17 and graduated early in April with a 3.7 gpa, I’m really wanting to go into general sonography, I’m just kinda worried because I’m not great at math and I’m also dyslexic. I tend to suck at taking notes as well as it’s harder for me to write things down super fast since I am dyslexic. I don’t think I should let this hold me back but I am worried that I won’t be that great at it.. I’m more of a hands on learner, I know if I do it myself (with help at first of course, since i wouldn’t know anything) i should end up getting the hang of things. I’m just kinda scared lol. What’s the hardest part of everything to you? (including the program and actually working by yourself) Do you think it’s a good career for someone who’s dyslexic and not great at math?
Hi hun! Wow you graduated early and with a great GPA!? That says a lot about you! Thank you for sharing your story and being honest you are so sweet and have great aspirations. I, too, am not great at math. But you managed to get good grades so all it takes is some studying and dedication to learning. Also, as far as letting things hold you back, think about if sonography is what you want.. do more research to see if you can do it. Look at the schools programs, talk to the counselors or professors. And actually ultrasound itself is a hands on learning experience.. you can find teachers who are willing to teach. The classes are just like advanced high school classes.
I know you’re scared but lots of things in life are scary! Definitely keep doing your research to see if this field is something you can handle. Scanning skills ultimately comes with practice and with patience but that part is repetitiveness and hands on. So really it’s all about how much do you want to do this job? Will you be able to operate the machine while scanning someone? Nothing is impossible but just know you have to work hard. The hardest part of everything we do? I’d say trying to describe something you have no idea how to describe 😅 but also that comes with time, practice, & experience. I hope this reply finds you well and I wish you luck with all your research! You didn’t give up with school so don’t give up on your dreams! 💖

Hi. Thanks for all your videos. Would do you say about attending a school that is not Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (caahep) accredited? I am truly torn with this. This is the only aspect holding me back from enrolling in the sonography program. Most schools that have this accreditation are day time only and I cannot attend school at that time. Your answer will be greatly appreciated

If the non accredited school allows you to sit for the ARDMS exam, then you should be ok. Just ask them what the requirements are for you to sit in for the ARDMS board exams. Also see if you can find someone who graduated from that program to see what their process was like.
@@lolgeselle thank you so much for responding. The school does allow me to sit for the ARDMS exam. The school is accredited just not by CAAHEP. I don’t know anyone in this field so this is all new to me

Do you still use physics when you’re working? Or is the class something you just have to get through in school and once you’re done with the class you don’t have to worry about it anymore? Soo nervous about the physics!! It is the only thing intimidating me
Hey Alexandria! Physics is how we use the machine and how it works. You don’t need it per say on the daily but you do need to know how to operate the machine and how it works.. that’s all physics based but it’s not like I’m busting out formulas or physics terminology on the daily haha. Definitely just try to get through it! Don’t let physics stop you. ✨
I am currently in high school but I’m having trouble finding a school. What did you major in? Or if you could recommend a major that could eventually get me to be an ultrasound technician.
Hi! Use CAAHEP.org to find an accredited school! I majored in "Comprehensive Medical Imaging - Ultrasound" you can find it also under Sonography or sometimes Radiology just depends on the school.
Is the program super competitive? Because I know the schools that offer it near me only accept like 8 people in the class.. also my moms friend had a great gpa and grades and she never got in the program:/ I really am interested in this field though. Ashleigh Lewis hi hun! ✨ welcome to the channel I appreciate you so much! Thanks for reaching out. Yes; they’re competitive. Most places take 10-15.. some rare ones even 20. But it’s competitive because it’s a “hands on field” and they can’t take too many otherwise you risk not teaching well. There’s also so many clinic sites out there in each city. Unfortunately it’s not an uncommon story for that to happen. Some people take two, three, even four tries to get into a program. That shows how badly they want it but some people don’t want to wait that long. I suggest doing research on schools, acceptance rates, see if you can speak to program directors/ counselors to see the amount of people who apply vs how many they accept. Find a school that will help you through the process! But there’s a ton of programs out there. Just gotta see if it’s something you want to get into, and spend time on. lolgeselle oh okay thank you for the very detailed answer :) did you get in your first time? And if you don’t mind me asking did you have to have a high GPA or the other students in your program?
Ashleigh Lewis of course! Anytime. Getting into ultrasound is different everywhere but mostly require similar things. I was at first an alternate, so I was planning on spending a whole year off then applying again, but by the grace of God & a miracle, someone dropped out and I got in the first time around. But I was willing to wait no matter how long. But that was just me. I wasn’t in a rush. And the GPA requirement was 2.5 so you have to make the minimum. But compared to others, it was higher. Like around a 3.5ish. But at my program they typically tried to take as many people as they could each year. And if you didn’t get in, you’d most likely get in whenever you try again second/ third time. Depends where you rank/when you applied.

Ashleigh Lewis thank you!!! Well I believe if it’s meant to be it’ll be, and if you work hard whisky you’ll get there no matter what life throws at you! 🤍 yes I think there’s always a chance! They will see you applied before and that you won’t give up. I did work! I had multiple jobs throughout. I usually worked about 2 years at each place before leaving for a better paying job. I started off in retail, was a manager at one point for a cafe, and eventually was making good money as a server. Until I quit for ultrasound 😋
Do you do physics in every year in school for sonography ?
cass scott hi!! you’ll most likely have to take a general physics class, which sometimes is split into two classes. And you will have an ultrasound physics class. But it’s not every year, just depends when you can take the class. Hope this helps!
Is it true that the ultrasound techs are not allowed to tell the patient if they are having a girl or a boy? As it is considered diagnosing the patient which can get you fired.
Kirsten Gonzalez yes this is absolutely true! If you tell them that is you diagnosing the patient. It is the OB doctor that will give the patients all results. Now if you are in the room with a doctor the doctor may look at you to confirm and then you can say your piece, but ultimately we as technologists do not “gender” the baby, especially in hospital settings.
Is the physics in the course hard to study ?
it can be difficult to understand the concepts but with proper studying you can get it done!
How many patients per day do you have on average?
Hello! For me? 10-15 patients per day. For the hospital, way more. For outpatient about 60-70 total in a 10 hour shift. These are fully staffed with 4-5 techs.
Any advice for Males trying to get into this career ?
Definitely just do your research! There’s no real difference between male and female students. Do your best, try to get into a program.. look to see if you wanna be a general tech or echo/ vascular tech!
What about 50's? Too late?
never too late! it takes about 2-4 years if you want to do something you love, I'd say go for it!
I'm wondering the same thing! I'm in my late 40s and have been home with kids for a LONG time and am ready for a change. After completing the program I'd be 50. A little nerve-wracking, but people keep saying it's not too late.
