  • The TRUTH about the HOSPITAL setting | 5 things you MUST know
    Hi CZcams!! If you are new here, HELLO, hi, welcome! My name is Geselle and I am a DISNEY loving, PAWSitive ultrasound technologist who wants to spread awareness and bring you along life with me! Thank you OH SO MUCH for clicking on this video, I am so happy and love having you here!! To my CZcams fam, you know how much I love you, and thank you for all the support you give me and my channel!
    Today's video is all about the hospital: situations you may find yourself in, types of patients you may have to scan, people you will be working with, special shifts that they offer that outpatients do not, and well... the truth and everything you need to know about what it's like working in a hospital. The good and the bad. I did my clinical in a hospital setting so I am used to the hospital setting. It is significantly different working in a hospital versus a doctor's office or outpatient clinic. Come along with me and listen to all the things you will come across if you decide to work in a hospital setting. I love it. It's challenging, exciting, busy, and gives more variety to my life. I enjoy talking to my patients, helping them in any way that I can, and making sure everyone leaves my room feeling at least a teeny bit better than they did before. Please enjoy, I know it's a long one but it has A LOT of information. If I missed anything or if you have any specific questions, please do not hesitate to comment down below or message me on instagram/ e-mail me! I am thankful you are here and learning more about the ultrasound field!

Every single one of you means so much to me! As always, take care, be safe, stay PAWSitive, be KIND, and we'll see you in the next one! XOXO, Ges.

    I get soo stoked when you release new videos! So much insight, always here for them.
    You mentioned you sometimes scan patients that are throwing up/coughing up blood etc. Do you see that a lot? Do you come in contact with bodily fluids often and how do you deal with situations like that?

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  Před 3 lety +6

      Awww Nataleeeeee I love that so much, I love seeing you here, you’re the reason why I do these! So thank you!!!! ❤️❤️
      Yes! We see that sometimes!!! And it’s not “a lot” per say, but it does happen. Just protect yourself with PPE, or give them some time, make sure the nurse gives them medicine first if possible, you can even let the nurse know the patient doesn’t want the exam at this moment and you’ll try again in a bit. Remember to always do what’s best for the patient! (And also for you!) We come into contact with bodily fluids mostly when we do interventional radiology procedures: paracentesis, thoracentesis, biopsies, etc. We don’t do these as much as regular exams. But some hospitals get a ton of procedures so you will get them if you happen to be the tech doing procedures that day. I promise it’s not so bad!!! Procedures actually get you comfortable with the probe and with bedside manners. You’re with a patient for a longer time than usual.
      I hope this response helps! 🤍

I've had them come in a few times when i was first starting off to take extra images themselves. i would say only 1 out of 6/7 times that they went in to rescan after me were they able to get a better look at a certain thing than the cines I was showing them.

    Does your arm hurt or are you used to it by now? My teacher has started letting us scan and after a few minutes my arm started to hurt, do you have any tips on how to deal with this?

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Kaysha! Thanks for watching and being here!! My arm definitely hurts here and there especially when I work long hours or don’t rest it from time to time. I’d say though if your arm is hurting after a few minutes, try to position the patient/ your lab partner in a way where your arm is sitting comfortably. Have the patient move closer to you. Make sure the bed is high enough where your shoulder isn’t too low or too high. I’d say if you’re sitting, try standing. Or if you’re standing, try sitting. Adjust adjust adjust! And hold the probe appropriately. Your arm should be kept near your body as much as you can so you’re not stretching it out so much. You shouldn’t be feeling pain at all if you’re scanning in a proper position.
      Also make sure you’re stretching your arms at home. Your neck and shoulder, even back and hips. Do little exercises or stretches on the daily to help with your body aches and pain!! The more you work on ergonomics, the better for your body!! I hope this helps, if you need more clarification or anything else please ask, and as always be careful! 🥰❤️

    Hi! Currently I’m in the field of nutrition. I’m very introverted and I feel like I need a change. Do you think sonography is a good choice for introverts/shy people? Thank you!!

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi there! Oh that’s awesome you’re in nutrition! Do you like it? Well, it’s interesting to say because I’m an extroverted introvert. I’m very shy. I don’t like public speaking or being in the center of attention.. lol. I get very anxious. What I like about this job is that it is ultimately up to you to understand how to operate a machine and to be able to take care of your patients. You may do well in an outpatient setting, however in the hospital there will be situations that you will need to stand your ground with some patients and doctors. I, being a shy person, was so scared and nervous. However clinical and this job taught me how to be more outspoken and to be more confident! That would probably also be a great change for you, but a PAWSitive change! Let me know what you think! 🥰

      @@Kbeauty203 aww I appreciate you being here!!! It can be stressful at times. Depends on where you work, and how you handle stress. If you can handle stress well, it’s not too bad. I for one don’t like to be stressed so I try not to! I definitely enjoy and love my job, so what’s there to stress about? You can only do so much, you can only go so fast, and the ultrasound machine can only see so much. So it’s all a mindset!! Definitely do more research and maybe see if it’s something you’d enjoy doing!✨

      Oh girly I totally get what you’re feeling! I felt the exact same way. I was scared, nervous, anxious.. I was kinda shy. But truly the hospital taught me so much. Gave me more confidence. Gave me a lot of experience. Showed me things I have never seen or encountered before. The people there really do help you learn. It’s a learning environment and you learn so much! You do see a lot and it’s tough, but it challenges you as a person and it makes you stronger as a technologist!! Originally I was supposed to go to an outpatient clinic for clinicals but ended up in a hospital. And I loved it. Outpatient is awesome as well it just has its major differences!

    Hi!! I wanted to know if you consider this a “high stress” job or not. Do you feel that it’s mentally draining? I know it can be physically taxing but I’m just wondering if you feel like you are under a lot of stress. I’ve always been curious about this!

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Patty!! It can be a high stress job in certain situations, but to be honest it’s not mentally draining.. it can be depending on if you become emotionally attached, or work somewhere where they don’t treat you right. But everywhere I’ve worked (10+ places) it is not draining. This is for me personally. I love what I do, and if I can do anything to help patients I’ll do. For others it may be mentally draining, but most of us sonographers enjoy our jobs and say the stress level is worth the career and the lifestyle. It can be hard and can be stressful, all situational, but when you enjoy what you do, it isn’t too bad to handle.
      I hope you find this helpful, any questions feel free to ask!

    can you have a few snacks in your pockets in case of people that have stomach issues or low blood pressure?

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  Před 3 lety

      You can, if you’re outpatient as well, but it’s best to not feed patient especially if they need to be NPO. Make sure you double check with the nurse otherwise if you feed them they might have to get a procedure it could be pushed back. So definitely double check with nurse if they could eat or be given snacks, some are NPO for important surgeries. The floors also have snacks! :)
