- Directed by Anthony Mann, the 1958 feature Man Of The West stars Gary Cooper, Lee J. Cobb, Julie London, Jack Lord, Royal Dano, Arthur O'Connell, and John Dehner.
Lee J. Cobb plays Gary Cooper's elderly uncle, complete with artificially whitened hair. Specific ages are never mentioned, but it's clear that Cobb is supposed to be at least a few decades older than Cooper. In reality, he was 10 years younger. - Zábava
The world of Cinema voted this the best action scene EVER filmed.
Cooper & Lord were friends long before Lord was an actor. Cooper advised Lord on how to be a movie actor. Lord wore make-up in public at Cooper's advice to never let his fans see him less than a star. They remained friends until Cooper passed away.
I didn't like this western when I was young, but I see it now for what it is, one of the great western movies. Gary Cooper was now at the end of his career and indeed his life and he gave a wonderfully world weary performance in this movie which is loosely based on Shakespeare's King Lear with the great Lee.J.Cob as the king. Poor Jack Lord got beaten and stripped in what must be one of the strangest fights in movie history, full of hatred and venom..great!
That was one of the best fight scenes I have ever seen in a Western..
I just saw this last night. I was gripping my leg during this scene! Very tense fight scene for a 50s-era movie.
年老いた名優ゲイリー・クーパーにこの様な殴り合いをさせるのは、心が痛む。
An actor who always played 'baddies', Robert Wilkie (High Noon, The Magnificent 7 etc) was also in this scene.
A Western where Gary Cooper gets into a brawl and literally tears the other guy's clothes off of him (I gather to pay him back for assaulting a woman). Now I've seen it all. Surprisingly raw, lurid scene for the 1950's. I think that would even raise some eyebrows in a movie made today.
You must have just started watching westerns, I've seen every fight cooper has had, on the silver screen, that one is fair at best, he died 2 years after this movie. I miss him.
This scene surprised me, given the year it was made. I have to agree with those comments about it being unnerving.
amazing...
Both fighters have talent congratulations.
The best western
A dark western for its time.
Quite interesting now since in other places I've read that Lord was very impressed by Cooper and tried to model himself in acting and public persona on Cooper. His acting certainly seems different from how it was in later roles.
"Old Coop" as ppl in here call him, is in his scenes , and not a double of him.
'Old Coop" looks better than his younger co-stars in this movie (in any movie i might add).
"Old Coop" was a far better and natural Actor thatn the ones suggested for this role by some ppl. And finaly , "Old Coop" was the Greatest Male Star of all times.
WELL SAID!
James Stewart was considered
Are these guys mad at each other?
Whoa,Steve MacGarett got spanked by Gary.
He needed Danno Kono Chin ho and Ben
Oh my god 😦
It's good that Sam sacrificed himself to save Link's life.
I’ve ever seen nothing like that in al my life lol
That's what you get for messing with Julie London.
She was a hottie
Nonsense. A great scene in a somewhat overlooked Western Classic. Cooper was perfect in the role and the contrast between him and the young Jack Lord is what makes the scene,
John Barone Can't see how it rates with the one with Lloyd Bridges in High Noon or Rod Taylor with William Smith in Darker Than Amber.
@@ThePiratemachine Well, High Noon is a classic.Does this film have its iconic status? No, but its about redemption, even at the cost of betrayal, Haven't seen "Darker than Amber". Have to check it out.
Brilliant response. Were you educated at Oxford or Cambridge?
Steve McGarrett got humiliated lol 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I remember watching this as a kid and thinking it was very dark and unpleasant.
Same here dude.
Goddammit Dutch, you're old!
Sorry, I just discovered that movie today.
What the Hell was that? What kind of fight is that wow that was really interesting
Did Jack Lord and wife Marie attend the funeral Of Gary Cooper In May of 1961? I Await Your Answer.
Jack lord didn't match acting as a cowboy
I think Glenn Ford would have been a good choice also.
Not nearly as good as the fight scene with Lloyd Bridges in High Noon - but similar.
What kind of a fight was that?😂
too much prejudice here against cooper;s age: if you get past it you will see just how great an actor he is here, better than stewart would have: stewart was fine in the othings better than coop in the rest but here coop was the better choice, as for the fight, well, coop is a bit weak in it, mann should not have dragged it out the way he did: let coop get in the first blows and then just keep brutalizing lord cobb is fine, you believe is is even older than coop truly a great western
Then express yourself properly. You have the education to do so.
A rare instance of a "feminist Western" (the other one being JOHNNY GUITAR). Whole fight is meant to show Lord what it feels like for a woman to be raped ! ;)
Felix Leiter needs James bond to beat Gary Cooper.
Gigante icono del western del universo GARY COOPER, su inteligencia y credibilidad solo están al alcance de unos pocos ,
Honestamente, 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🛤🛤🛤🛤🛤⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
In most of his Western movies involving him in a fist-fight, Cooper usually takes a bad beating, until finally coming out on top. He always looks outmatched and too old.
年老いた名優ゲーリー・クーパーに、この様な殴り合いをさせる事に心が痛む。彼は、この様な過激な演技を強いられた事により、ガンで早死にしたのではないだろうか?
I'm In Love With Jack Lord. He Needs To Shave Though. I Like Watching Jack Lord Swing His Belt Around When He's About Take It Off It's Kinda Cute. Since Jack Dies I'm Not Sure I Wanna Watch This Movie anymore... I Know He Was Not A Good Guy In This Movie, But In Lots Of His Other Movies & Shows He's A Very Good Guy And I Love It. I Very Much Love Him In The Original Hawaii 5 O A Very Wonderful Police Man!
Shannon I agree with you 💯 Jack Lord aka Steve McGarrett is handsome without the beard
Gable was the greatest male star of all times.
Harold Jameson Nah. Errol Flynn, and he did his fighting in real life with John Huston and a stuntman David Niven talks about.
@PeterFirthFan You often seem to be glad that somebody's dead. Not trying to start an argument. Merely an observation.
Lets face it, the movies were good, but the fight choreographers sucked back then.
these two men can't fight to saved their miserable lives
That was the weakest fight ever and not only that who in the hell fights like that. That was a stupid fight.
@@caseyoliver7615 Cooper did a better one in High noon with Lloyd Bridges. I thought this one was crappy. Anthony Mann does get carried away with his Shakspearian pretensions, or should that be intentions. Over-dramatic. Fred Zimmerman did a much better job. Not so forced.
A bit hard to take seriously.
Cooper was too old for this film and his stunt double in the fight was too obvious.
He never used doubles.
Phoniest phight I have ever seen.
Fight not phight, learn to spell
The only good thing about this movie is Gary Cooper. The rest is really garbage, Anthony Mann must have been drunk all the time when directing the movie. Crap.
Gamibiteer Julie London is " the thing " about this movie.
