This guide on how to lunge a horse is full of great tips and advice.
Many thanks to Plumpton College for their help in creating this video. For more information on Plumpton College visit www.plumpton.ac.uk - Jak na to + styl
For people learning to lunge, please NEVER have the lunge in loops with your hand through them, as seen in this video. If the horse takes off, the loops can tighten on your hand and you can be dragged. I know of three people who have lost fingers from a lead/lunge wrapping around them because of this. You put the lunge rein back and forth across your hand so at no stage is there ever a circle or loop of it with your hand through the middle of the loop, it just sits across your hand so that if the horse takes off, it can not tighten around your hand.
So true and she didn't even have a numnah or a saddle pad!
Leanne Owens did,,s
Where is the saddle pad it can still rub him even if your not on him and if you keep doing it with out a saddle pad it can cause serious pains and u may not be able to ride him
I personally think she needs to be a lot firmer with her commands. If I'm on a horse and I really need him to stop, I don't want to have to say "and staaaaand" for five minutes.
i agree they didnt even show the horse stopping!!
cant believe how much you have helped me excellent made it much easyier to understand thank you and westiie
It's not okay to have your saddle on the horse without a saddle pad! The saddle can leave saddle soars.
I agree, I always wear my helmet and gloves if I am lunging or doing any ground work, especially with the green horses. Its like an instinct for me.
Camilla, what you described sounds like me with my new horse. When I asked him to lunge, he would just turn towards me, not sure what I was asking of him. I tried again the next day, but this time using a lunge whip. The whip is not to hit the horse, but to drive him forward. He has been fine ever since. If you don't want to use a whip consider another tool to drive your horse forward. One person I know uses their jacket! However, you did mention your horse was kicking out, so be careful.
@Ponyositiy thats very true. I know of people who have been dragged and or broken fingers that way.
@Natasha B
Thanks for your comment. I have a 3 yr old QH who acts like a Thoroghbred on crack. I HAVE to lunge her before I ride so we can have a nice schooling session. Lunging is very demanding, but my horse is fit enough to handle lunging + riding every day. I don't know about you, but you might just ride horses that are very calm and are ridden for many lessons every day. Lunging (In MY opinion) is a great bonding experience for both horse and rider, and serves as a fantastic warm up.
Am i crazy but where it the saddle pad!
The open gate is driving me nuts!!!
SORRY. WHAT IS THE DIFERENCE BETWEEN CIRCLING AND LUNGING, AND ROUND PENNING. SOME OF THE 3 ARE THE SAME? I SEE DE AAEP GRADES OF LAMENESS AND DEFINE GRADE II SOME CASE OF HORSES WITH LAMENESS ONLY WHEN CIRCLING AND THE GRADE III SAYS "AT THE TROT". BUT IF CIRCLING INVOLVE TROT IN CIRCLES THERE WOULD BE SOME CONFUSION IN BOTH GRADES (II AND III). PLEASE WOULD YOU CAN EXPLAIN ME THAT TERMS? FROM PERU
do u have to hit the horse with the lunge wipe/crop to get it into a trot /canter
@Ponyositiy That is true, but dealing with such a long line ends up getting a tad tricky, and as long as you keep a loose hand and loose loops you should maintain organization of the line and not lose a hand. (so many looses!)
squirealan that's why she had gloves on
@nat9810 I would suggest watching some videos on natural horsemanship such as parelli or clinton anderson. watch the way they use the whip or stick as a reward and as incentive, much like any dominant horse would. whenever she does a good thing, rub her itchy spots with it, when she doesnt do as you ask, "bite" at her with the whip. it takes practice but hopefully youll get the hang of it.
my horse always runs in when i lunge her and rears of other things like buck iv tried to hard to control her but shes just being a bit moody do you know what ma help ???
when i stand still and try to lunge my horse to the right he backs away instead .. but to the left he does it properly why would that be?? any suggestions on how to make him lunge to the right??
hey! i hope i can some help..yesterday i tried to lunge my 6-year old mare. I have done it before, but yesterday, it was like she didnt understood what she was about to do. Everytime i put pressure to her, and told her to walk, she turned around and looked at me, and then walked over to me, and just stood there. I tried to throw the rope gently after her, and then she would just buck and rear and then look at me again. some advice? btw im not allowed to use a whip
Why dose your horse have no saddle pad or half pad
Actually, If you have a saddle that fits the horse perfectly, You don't need a saddle pad. Regular saddle pads are used to keep the panels of your saddle clean (therapeutic or correction pads are another story).
@nat9810 For not being able to hold herself in a circle, try lunging in an enclosed area such as a round pen or small paddock. that way you are forcing her to keep the circle. You could always try walking up and down the arena walls with her on the lunge, ask for a trot and as she comes to the wall take a few steps along with her. You may find it helpful to get lunging experience from a "lunge master" or a horse that knows how to lunge well.
My gelding doesn't stay out in the circle and I can't get him to lunge on the off side. I just moved him to a new barn, so this may be part of the problem, but we've been at this new barn for a week. Some people at the barn are trying to tell me I need to stand by his butt like I do when I turn him around in his stall. -.- Any advice?
Through every transition I do with my horse (on the lung line) he throws a bucking fit. What should I do ? I only lunge for around 10 minutes before I ride as he used to be showjumper and can get very excitable when I first get on. Also he doesn't respond to voice commands/aids. I have tried and tried with commands but I never seem to get a response; so I then have to use a whip (obviously I don't hit him I just flick it at his hocks). He bolts sometimes when you drag the whip on the floor and you end up having the lunge ripped out of your hands or being pulled forward. I lunge in a lunging pen (a round arena/ménage) as my horse struggles to find balance and constantly drifts in and out when doing circles in general. How can I break this habit ??
my horse is constantly fighting with the lunge rein - it is the first time he and iv have lunged, so im no expert! angone got any advice to stop my beastie from pulling on the lunge line? and any other tips before i start lunging again? Thanks :D
I can't seem to lunge my boy, he can do about 3 times round me but then gets confused and tense (even though the whole time i'm telling him he's fantastic and clever) and i can't use a whip my boy as he is scared to death of them! Even if i rub it on him, telling him he's a good boy etc as soon as i use it he trys to attack it. Any ideas?
i have one tip for you, DO NOT, and i repeat DO NOT HOLD THE LUNGE LINE IN LOOPS. A lady at my barn was holding the lunge line in loops and when the horse spooked she lost her fingers. Anyway, this video was extremely helpful to me when lunging my horse
@Ivibibi10 because it doesn't really matter, saddle pads are just for looks, honestly.
also desensatise my horse with a lung whip befor lunging but she still gets scared from it i dont crack it i do when i am desencitising her but thats when shes cumfterble with it :( please help me
Wheres the saddle cloth?
What negative comments these are. I found it most helpful. Thank you.
well it is till incorrect you should never hold a lunge like that
and it can get painful for the horse when they don't have a saddelpad
I love when u did the if horses were people videos ^-^
@Ponyositiy unless its custom made. Which is pretty rare :)
Hi there! I need a little advice :)
I was lunging my 12 yr Stock horse yesterday and he was going quite well, except he would pull out on the lunge almost dragging me out with him, and he wouldn't change direction. I have always made him lunge both ways but today it just seemed like he wouldn't, no matter what. I eventually let him go but I could;t work out what I was doing wrong? Could you please help me? Thanks xx :)
why do you need a saddle to lunge?
@steve74i It can be dangerous. if the horse spooks and bolts, she will have no control in a large field, but has more control in the sand school.
You need a saddlepad, but other than that very helpful. Thanks.
@MagnoliaDreaming Well, if the horse spooks and runs into her for safety and she gets knocked over, her head is going to be safe and yours probably isn't in the same situtation because of the lack of a helmet
@123tweettweet123 No you don't, the wipe/crop is like punishment meaning your making him do before you ask nicelly with the command on however you teach your horse and you use the crop/whip when the horse won't listen.
Anyone watching this for accurate training - I wouldnt advise stepping back commencing lunging, it is a certain fail in a bhs exam which i am pretty sure plumpton college train for.
The correct and safe way is to step forward and sideways away a few steps sending the horse forwards with the whip at a safe distance. (Also remember to shut the gate after you)
why no pad? eve without a rider a saddle moving or even just sitting there is gonna rub like hell
When the horse stepped towards her she jumped back like she was afraid.
The horse got spooked by something could of been how fast she moved infrount of him or something else
This horse has really nice movements :)..
@MagnoliaDreaming It is my personal opinion that a helmet should always be worn--a friend of a friend had a horse spook with her while she was leading it and it slammed into her and her head hit a metal hook the wall; she passed away. Of course, it is just my opinion that this woman's ground safety is perfect--you are perfectly entitled to your own opinion and I can see why in 98% of circumstances a helmet is not necessary.
It's not a necessity, but it depends on what you're doing/using. You would also need to use a saddle pad if you did have the saddle on. I don't think she used one cause I can't see it. :/
why do indoors and not in a open field
@limeabe Letting a horse run free in an arena can be very dangerous, especially when they work themselves up so much they end up injuring themselves. on a lunge you are able to control them to a better extent. You as the lunger are in charge of the area, the speed, and the horses attention. Letting a horse run leads to a horse paying no attention whatsoever to the human, lunging helps to bring them into a better mindset for working. I never use a whip, but i carry one for safety.
@irrelayfo If it's not a problem chiropractor related than maybe he is not used to lunge on the right side and he needs some positive reinforcement and guidence
Would you say that horse adverts on Horse Mart can be trusted? I'm going to buy my own horse soon so I want to know the best websites.
Horse quest is in my opinion amazing.

Thanks I will check it out. 👍🏻
surly it is bad to cross the rain to the horse into the hand with the wip....
Ummm weres ur saddle pad?😂
near end the horse looked like it was about to trample her. He jumped forward
Are the boots absolutly necessary?
Depends on the horse
The horse I ride once a week is very panicky about the lunge whip and I never use it anyway, because she reacts to my voice quite well, but she is always pulling on the lunge line terribly, most of the time nearly dragging me with her. Also, I lunge with only a halter, no saddle or reins or bridle. How do I stop her from pulling on the lunge line?
If you use a bridle you'll have a bit more control
Thanks, I lunged her before riding because she was terribly energetic. And while I would like to put your advice to the test, the yard sold her -she belonged to the yard- somewhere begin January after multiple riders (including me, I was the first actually) had accidents while riding with her. I miss her something terrible though ='(
+yamixyoukai Awwww in sorry about that :(
the woman is crossing her legs over the wrong way, causing the horse to not have a space to go cause her hip is blocking him, not drawing him to go that way. why isnt the horse wearing a saddle pad?
I like to use a lot softer voice when lunging my horse because she listens to me better. Also, I never touch my horse with the whip unless it is completely necessary, as if the whip cracks she can get spooked and kick out, so I always have the whip with me, but hit it on the ground. Just saying.
And you can tell using a softer voice works as she uses quite a rough voice and she has to kep saying 'and standd' for about 5 minutes.
PUT A SADDLE PAD ON HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A good quality well fitting saddle does not need a pad
+jazzy96ful can u plz explain to me why? im curious. bc it seems unconfortable to me.
They are designed to not touch the spine and the smooth filled pads are soft enough to not be uncomfortable and will adjust to the horses shape A numnah (pad) is used in competition and hacking but often not in the show ring
jazzy96ful You should never ride or lunge without a saddle pad. If your saddle fits perfectly then use a baby pad. The saddle will rub the horses sides and cause sores and it's very uncomfortable for the horse to wear a bare saddle.
Courtmasterlucky5 Firstly this is a video made at a British Equestrian College not some backyard place. A good well made saddle does not need a pad and will not rub a horse - if your saddles do then they can't be very good quality or are badly fitting. Tell all the top British show riders that still show horses in the ring without pads that they're wrong.
I have start to do lunging with my horse and I try to get her out of my bubble but she trys to bite me and I get scared to get her to get out of my bubble and she buckes when I get her to go out. and I can't get her to walk first but she start to go to trot. and I can't get her to canter at all.
Lunge whip?
Yes i do that but she still bits me
+kasey findlay Try to free school her for a few minutes in the walk trot and canter before catching her and adding the lunge line?
+Ruby moss well theres one thing about my horse spice she is scared of the float an i have try to get her on there. and i dont have a around riner for my horses
Those of you who watched this DO NOT USE A LUNGE LEAD if you really want to work out the horse you should let him run free in the arena because a lunge lead will make them feel like they have limited space and please don't actually hit the horse with the lunging whip it will tramitize them
I dont lunge with a saddle on
@WondersCreated haha wow i found your comment again on another video lol!
U NEED THE SADDLE PAD WOMAN OMG!
no what I do is I hit the ground behind him not hard, so I could get him moving.
u dont step back wen u lunge
''making sure the horse isnt scared when working with the whip'' fucking hell a horse is going to be scared because it hurts the horse fucking hell
yeh well you need to learn a bit about horses lmao.
the whip. never. touches. the. bloody. horse.
🙄🙄🙄🙄
Oh to have a perfect horse ;)
DOn't you use a saddle pad? You could hurt your horse you know..
ohk i can lunge my horse but .... she just wont hold herselfe in the circle and pulls on the lead so it titens around my hand please help me or email me an answer if you have one please !!!!! littlemisshorses @hotmail.comand can you use open front jump boots when lunging cose thats all i have atm i do have polos but still lerning to use them and
i love how the way she says bellybutton
and never lunge for more than 15 mins its hard on the horse and can cause injury(:
@irrelayfo Maybe he has some problems with his right side? Try having a chiropractor look at him.
@lovepiano4ever Uggg why does everyone think that?? I pour all my money into my english jumping horse, and so far she hasn't earned any money. which is totaly fine by me, I never expect her to. Money is only when you make it to the REALLY big shows.
shut the gate
Ahhhh saddle pad
I just love how ignorant people are!
1. You longe with the saddle on before you ride.. You NEVER ride a fresh horse out of a stall... duhhhh
2. Chains are very useful when you have a very fresh or spirited horse who is hard to control.
:) (:
why is she still moving her feet while asking him to stand? body language contradicting herself and confusing her horse
You put 4 twice and the last thing is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
Pad!!!!!!!.???.??????
You are really missing the point of lunging.. this horse is obviously a well trained horse and your horse all ready knows what is expected of him.. but your body language is al wrong.. you are lunging like a nice English rider is "supposed to do" and that's what you're busy with instead of working WITH your horse.. The best test is to work with an inexperienced horse.. with this body language you will get nowhere.. You should really try it! you will be amazed :-) you do have a lovely horse!
+Viking Song Yeah, i lunged my horse, even though i've been riding him for 3 years and he's really experienced, before i ride just because it's a good way for me to see the way he moves and to just have fun with him really. sometimes when i want to do trot poles of canter poles i lunge him over them so i can get him used too them before i get on.
I can't even believe you people tell yourselves you love horses while abusing them..
Thats disgusting. Let the horse be.
This is a sad video. Mainly because you "an expert" but yet you have not saddle pad! Yeah, This is logical.
