      @@TheBlackQueen Yes, because somebody doesn't want to master the guitar since it's not an ambition of theirs, they are lazy.

    • @TheBlackQueen
      @TheBlackQueen Před 2 lety +5

      @@SpaceEmperorGenos "It's not an ambition of theirs", if your career is a guitarist, your ambition is to that instrument. Playing only the bare minimum skill for one kind of music and excusing that as your creative style is in natural law the easiest way to play guitar and sticking to the easy way is indeed lazy. It's akin to always playing a video game on beginner's mode. The excuse "I'm just playing it for fun" is no longer valid when you get a record deal and it's your main ambition to be a guitarist. Look at how Punk started. It was a rebellion against musicality and complexity where the point was just to be loud and obnoxious in the face of Prog, Metal, and the overall elite class of Britain at the time. Their point wasn't to master guitar but rather to make a statement. Fine, make the statement all you want, but don't put people like Johnny Ramone on greatest guitarists lists simply for doing the simplest shit. Lowering the bar is not an accomplishment. Isolating all your musical diversity to one type of genre, especially one already heavily limited on musicality in itself, is simply plain and musically chaste.

    'Power chords'. Real chords ('barre chords') provide a much broader tonal coverage resulting in a fuller sound. Virtually all of the early punk rock bands (Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols etc.) used only barre chords. 'Don't use a pick'. 'Don't use your brain', more like. Is this a serious suggestion? 'Play simple chords over really fast drum beats'. Bit hard to avoid when playing punk rock. 'Use the banana strum'. And here I've been using the grapefruit strum. Went looking for this in case it was a thing and the closest I came was one CZcams video where the word 'banana'' was used as a mnemonic for an up-down guitar strum count of three. 'Don't get too complicated with the lead guitar'. It's punk rock; you can do what you like. Bands like the Dead Kennedys, Clash, Patti Smith Group, the Voidoids and many others had no qualms about playing a complicated solo if the song needed it. Punk musicians are proper musicians too, it's just that punk music is generally played at a higher tempo and has a relatively distinct set of stylistic indicators. Having said that, there is always room for innovators and if that means 'good' musicianship the so be it. BTW a few of those key New York bands HAD to be good because no audience, no drugs...
