I tend to rely on a simplified power chord sort of thing, although it really depends on the sound I'm trying to get. 3 AD breaks, I'm impressed. Didn't know you got monetized. The last chord in the technique it is an inverted powerchord, the root note is the one in the higer string.
Right. Sometimes people call these 4th chords but you are correct.
Punk to me is like stripping away the technicality and complexity of metal. Keeping the soul and energy but directing it in a simple direct positive direction.
You hit the nail on the head. Beatdown Hardcore for e.g takes influence from Death Metal and strips it down keeping it more simple but still heavy, in some cases more heavier.

I recently tuned down my guitar half a step and when you mix that with my use of power chords. I tell ya, you get the best blend of punk speed and metal tone.

Iâve been producing for about 2 years so I am a noob but this is the best how to video for punk rock guitar Iâve found. Also your brand of subtle comedy is very fun. I just recently wanted to figure out punk music because my favorite band in high-school was Relient K. They werenât super huge but they drew heavily from punk and blended it with some other genres at times. I want to take inspiration from them but until now I didnât know how to. Thanks for being cool and sharing your knowledge and talent.

tip for pop punk song.. take position 1 of major scale whatever key your In letâs say CâŠmake a quick riff then play power chord progression over that like a 1,5,64 (c,g,a,f) palm mute the progression for the verse repeat for the chorus.. for a bridge play 3 of the chords slowly an experiment with the techniques you show here but that formula for me always comes out sounding like pop punk

truly appreciate this fam. I've been trying to teach myself guitar recently, I always did drums and vocals in bands, and I felt lame being the only guy who couldn't play guitar lol. so I taught myself all the normal cords, only to find most of the songs I want to play aren't using normal cords. imagine my chagrin.
could you maybe do a video on e flat tuning? I was trynna learn heart shaped box by nirvana but every tuning I do sounds like shit
Eb is basically the same as standard everything is just a semi tone or one note lower. The voicings and everything are the same. Keep practicing, you'll get there!

The Tom Delonge thing u did is called suspended power chord and its there in MCR and simple plan songs too and itâs common in pop punk
I have since done a lot of research and these are considered augmented power chords. I'll be touching on them more in the future, but you are correct, they're a staple in punk rock đ€

Our Lady Peace uses drop D for their songs. They are alternative/grunge. It sounds very good with their sound.

I think that chord you were doubting if it was diminished or suspended is just an interval of sixth and octave. It's like going from CGC to BGB.

i have no idea what i'm trying to figure out on the guitar, i'm not a punk fan but i do enjoy dig up her bones by misfits and then i like the hard metal sounds by early Devin townsend who formed strapping young lad.
Devin is amazing, one of my influences. His stuff is definitely more on the metal side, but not insanely complicated

Those are some nice tones. I always have trouble sliding up and down the fretboard playing those power chords. I catch myself choking the neck too tight, making it more difficult to navigate LOL

As I said in the video, there are rules to music theory. However, those rules can be bent, or broken. Typically modern popular music is either in a major scale (happy) or minor scale (sad) tho that's super simplifying music theory. You don't NEED to know theory to write music, but it certainly doesn't hurt!

You didn't mention that classic punk rock also uses regular major and minor chords, did you?
Not sure if I did, but major and minor are a pretty standard building block of all music. This is more techniques that are used specifically in the punk sub genre

I use an SSL 2 interface which is pretty cheap. A focusrite scarlet is also a good option

when playing octaves power chords, what do u do with the chord that would be the fifth? do u palm mute or just let it ring open or idk wtf u do with that motherfocker chord its sounds so bad when i just let it open and ignore it (the chord between the tonic and the octave)

Use your index finger to mute the 2nd string of the chord. Unless the open note fits the scale, then it sounds fun!

As I explain in the video you're just moving the root of a power chord around so it can be done with basically any chord.
Am I just strumming same strings regardless of the chord Iâm playing? Or do I have to match my strumming pattern with the root, the fifth and the octave positions? I appreciate your response and apologies if I came off a little rude.
@@charliekill88 it's all good! For that specific technique you want to just pick each note individually. Try playing around with the pattern to come up with something you like!
