In this vid we forge a armor making tool called a stake. Ilya forged this out of 1045 using mostly the power hammer but also some hand forging and bending as well. This stake was used to make the previous video project where Ilya makes a buckler shield out of mosaic damascus for one of his Art Knife Invitational projects. Sometimes when you need a tool you have to make a tool! That's what this series is all about.

ilya are you married?
tier S blacksmith + historian + man of culture + absolute mad lad = Ilya
There is no disputing that ! Thank you
@@ThatWorks was thinking the same. Love the historic and artistic insights Ilya sprinkles in as he does his work.
Ilya is secretly an immortal who IS the Ancient Master whose skill all modern craftsmen strive to achieve, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
@@attilathenun dude your profile picture and username is nightmare fuel.
Vikings would have never returned to plunder Britain if the nuns in them Monasteries looked like this......
@@DFloyd84 Nope, I knew him when he sucked...It was a Wednesday and it only lasted about an hour.
Just watching this after seeing that the channel was hacked. Glad you got it back and I hope you can regain views and recover
I think about these medieval smiths, and most smiths up until the modern manufacturing era, starting from scratch and building up their arsenal slowly and methodically. It's a completely different mindset, and it has its pro's and con's, but you have to admire anyone who has the work ethic, determination, imagination and ingenuity to accomplish this type of thing.
That’s why these sort of professions were passed down generationally. So they didn’t have to start from scratch.
I want to see Ilya's art go full meta:
He makes a weapon that has a depiction of him making a weapon on it.
A weapon with a depiction of him making the same weapon. Let's get some infinite recursion going! :P
I'm joking. Mostly.
@@seanheath4492 Better yet, a forging hammer with a depiction of him forging the same hammer?
I think we should all be afraid of ilya if his own metaverse
"Ilya, I've come to bargain!"
@@ThatWorks The Ilyaverse sounds simultaneously wonderful and terrifying. Everything is beautiful and artful, but it can stab you. Like... all of it. Stabby McStabberson.
You are an energy Being. Thank you for lifting my courage and to show those Masterskills. Gloriam .
Can we go to the store and buy some tools?
Ilya: "We have tools at home"
The Tools at home 😎
He always wants to keep every tool we get to restore.
I dig it when the insta experience gets dragged over to youtube. I don't make time to scroll through instagram, looking for things, so it's always a pleasant surprise to see good content get pushed up into my feed. Thanks!
Oh cool! Thanks for sharing!
you had me at "tapered hole"."
long day at work, need that kind of juvenile laugh for myself sometimes. hope you do well at your upcoming competition you two.
That's the best thing about being a blacksmith if you need a tool you can always make one 👍🏻
Thought Chandler Dickinson was back for a second when i saw that title!
I was trying g to remember why that sounds familiar
I wonder where he is. I hope he's doing good
Haha! Right?!? I really do miss his projects and videos.
I am not familiar. I will have to check him out
I hope he is ok and doing well. I miss his videos and his fire side chats. The guy was super cool
2:18 oh, lost that in 'the divorce'. Great video Matt and Ilya.
I too would love to see more of these need a tool make a tool videos.
Exceptional quality videography and storey telling
Sounds like a plan to me? Anything particular you want to see made?
This is the kind of thing I love hearing about. The amazing things you can do, the ordinary miracles, that might get missed.
It’s easy to take them for granted but they are so crucial to the craft
Илья невероятно крут! Столько знаний и таланта! И руки золотые! Комбо! :)
If the is such a thing as the "IT" factor. You have IT. Amazing job thanks for sharing
ahhh you are too kind!
Hi, Matthew! Привет, Илья! As a beginner armory smith, I support that you already started showing how to make an armor and engraved thin metal. That is a real composition of art and sculpture!
Hi Ilya,
I hope your journey to mastery is successful. That you discover the full breadth of your talent.
Maybe it'll be your turn to inspire others some day soon. Who knows?
All the best on your work, and happy holidays!
P.S. I'd have written this in Russian/Ukrainian, but it been 12 years since my last lesson.
Thank you! There will be much more!
@@jonathanyaloussa Привет из России :)Thank you! At holidays I would try to do all my best and would make some blacksmith presents for friends Also we going to arrange local historical maneuver games with formation of medieval soldiers and test armor that I made. Welcome to visit us in Russia :)!
@@user-co3px2nh2l - Yes, I remember. I always preferred приве́т to the long and formal здравствуйте.
And yes, visiting Russia is definitely on my bucket list. Many of my friends high-school friends have lived there and speak very highly of your people.
Loved it. Nice work. The story is worth as much as the result.
I don't care what others say... BUT!!! when one creates a tool to fulfill a project. Then one can either proclaim themselves Artisan or Master... Eventually Master Artisan. and Ilya certainly shows this.
Meh, he is alright ;)
One thing is obvious between these videos and me, besides a power hammer. Skill level.
love this series already, it's such a cool concept to be able to make your own tools, maybe one day I'll be able to do it too
It will be an organic series. We won’t force it, but if we are in need of a tool and decide to make one…we will film it!
@@ThatWorks make tools like these huge ass tongs (or whatever they're called) you use. I see a variety of tongs on your videos, so I think you're making them on your own.
Best thing about smithing is, if you have a hammer, an anvil and something to grab the metal with, you can proceed to make all the tools you need. I like, when Ilya does other projects, than weapons. Tools, armor, ornamental smithing on anything he makes. He can show the versatility of smithing perfectly.
I love everything you guys put out. Also, when Matt said durable it sounded like adorable and was kind of funny! Keep up the good shit!
I thought the same thing when editing
@@ThatWorks Glad I wasn’t the only one haha!
Hell yeah guys, this is awesome.
Thank you Sasha
Making armor is an amazing artform.
Stake and planishing hammer - what the medieval smith had instead of the modern planishing wheel. (I kind of got obsessed with trying out a planishing wheel when I watched Jesse James make motorcycle gas tanks with his.)
Outstanding content, Entertaining, Educational, & Inspiring. I appreciate how your videos tell a story, thanks for sharing
Damn this video was so nicely made, you guys showed more personality, and the music was very fitting and well edited as well. We always praise Ilya for his astounding work, but Matt deserves it just as well.
That means a lot my friend! Thank you on both levels!
Make Corvo's Folding Blade from the dishonored franchise.
what an awesome video! such a cool buckler too! keep em coming guys!
Thanks bud! What was your favorite part?
Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas to the whole crew.
Same to you and yours!
Legendary!!! ^^ Thanks so much for this boys!!!
With Witcher 3's next gen update now live, I must repeat my request for Zireael. I need it now more than ever.
Great Video
Thanks bro
Espectacular!!!
Killer tool. Well done all.
Thanks Trev! Love the work you are doing
Ребята вы очень крутые Мастера.
Alright, listen; I've already seen that shield video 10 times since it came out. You really didn't need to give me much of an excuse to go watch it another 10 times lol
Also, really interested in seeing where this series will lead to; with some of the projects you guys take on, I would not be surprised if every now and again you'd have to make a specialized tool just to get the material where you need it for the final build.
Almost every project needs some specialized tooling that we either have from previous projects or have to make
Please, make a draw plate for chainmail wire!!!!
Please forge Dyrnwyn from the Disney version of The Black Cauldron and make it out of damascus steel and make the scabbard to go with it.
Interesting and informative as usual, even for something relatively mundane like a stake. I was wondering about the S bend but Ilya explained all.
Yup! The shape wasn’t needed so much on this one but will be handy in the future for helmets and other deeply dished items
I smoke briskets during the holidays and I use a grill/smoker, but the issue is that to open the firebox I end up exposing my arm to the heat. In order to avoid that, I grabbed some #4 rebar and used the fire to heat the metal and make a long hook, all inspired from watching y'all.
Love your guys content. Matt, a few times in this vid there is booming music obscuring the last few of your words. Please smack editor with a hammer, brand if necessary!! Lol
awsome video
Thank you Justin! What should we do next?
Ahh, making tools like this is the bane of my existence. As a hobbyist armorer, making tools feels like such a waste of time. Unlike in a production workshop, most of my tooling become single use items.
Though i really would kill for a stake like that.
Trust me…The first time I went to Tony Swatton’s shop there was a pile of stakes that he had made for dif jobs. He told me that there were so many that he ended up making the same tool twice instead of searching through the pile
I still want to know how you were able to harden the plasticine! I've never been able to get it to harden the way you showed in the last video when I try to do chasing.
Refrigerator ?
I say this so often on smithing videos… I need to make one of those…
yeah Matt you do make stuff and when will we see some more? :P
Sword of Aeons: Fable the Lost Chapters
Have always loved watching your videos. Have you all ever considered naked the 3 swords from the book series “Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn”, by Tad Williams? I hat would be quite a sight for sure.
Hey Matt how long does a Tang need to be on my knife and the Elf Axe is called the Eleven Larp Axe
Cool. Are you guys going to be doing fantasy armor builds, too, like the many batman, Spiderman, or anime armors?
We have something epic planned for sure!
Btw have you seen the Mandalorian Armor series on our channel?
@@ThatWorks absolutely I have. I commented on it, too. A great series.
Can you make a Elf Axe with Viking runes on it it would be nice
Elf axe? Aces aren’t very elven. Can you link me an example?
Anyone else get a little bit of amusement out of Ilya showing the tried and true "if at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer". Just me... ok
Whats your thoughts about Atlantic33? Is it a good beginner steel because the heat treat is water and sounds simple?
Its good for a lot of things! Pretty much idiot proof and gets hard enough for most impact tooling.
Kind of a random thought, not necessarily relevant to this build, but I wonder how much usable metal could be reclaimed from, say, a year's worth of scale. I know it wouldn't be worth the time and effort, but it's just one of those things I wonder about.
There are ways. You can run a smelt with scale. You can canister saw dust. But like you said, it’s not really worth it unless you want to say you did it!
The last time I heared someone using the term "need a tool - make a tool" it was Acel Steele after one of his failes "need a tool - make a tool - break a tool - buy a tool". I can´t remember what he tried to make though.
Well…I enjoy Alec’s projects but more often then not he breaks things. Seems to be his way. Hopefully with some exp under his belt that will become less of a thing unless it’s a gimmick he uses for audience retention
Bin playing Elder Scrolls V Skyrim and started thingkin about weapons and im now wondering sins the Companions quest line gives you silver swords is it even posible to actually make a usable silver sword? Some fantasy and vampire movies and games use that as weapons.
Yes it’s possible…they would be crap against steel once’s but against flesh they would work just fine
Hey have you all tried to make a hammer from Titanium? I have yet to see one for blacksmithing but when i was a carpenter we all used a TITANIUM Hammers( Stabilla) that were nice and light and gave the same or better driving ability. So i am wondering if this would be the same. Cheers, M
A forging hammer needs mass, a hammer made from titanium would force it to be bigger which would not be practical.
Great video, but the music does injustice to it... I actually turned the volume down completely to be able to continue watching..
Can't please them all... I had fun editing to this so I kept it.
same here, love all their videos, but I'd rather hear the power hammer hitting the steel or quieter background music
@@ughmas most of the video was recorded with no sound. I used the shop noise where I had it…mostly at the end
@@ThatWorks Understood - I know everyone has different tastes, was just offering my opinion. I will still watch no matter what! you guys rock
What happened to the old shop?
Is it possible to forge a Damascus chellow and have it show a pattern and work as a muscle instrument (the full body chellow not the modern style)
yea, I dont see why not
👍👍👍👍👍
Lol new episode feature. Make the tool we guess the item that’s being made. First person gets it wins a prize
Generaly speaking, illya is not a swordsmith or blacksmith,, but smith em all😂
I found out this come out on Discord not from CZcams and that's F'd up they didn't let me know!!!
I could have sworn, you still use the same workshop as in Baltimore knife and sword.
Nope
Have you or Ilya ever been asked to be on Forged in Fire.
Ilya was and he made a shield...I wont spoil the outcome for you though
Season 2, episode 4.
a classical score would fit better than electronic music
The full build video is all classical!
tool pleases its creator
Indeed
Argh, I thought he'd forge the legendary breastplate stretcher!
Robert Baratheon?
Lol maybe next time?!?
@@ashesofhopesinabonfireofdr6341 - Yes!
Had to watch this video on mute
Was it fun?
@@ThatWorks visually, yes
Why did ye leave the last place ye were working and why leave some of your tools behind?
It was just time. It was a bad atmosphere that discouraged creativity.
@@ThatWorks awe ok there was friction there I get it but why not take all your tools were you guys stopped from doing so or something?
Matt just send me your Gmail. CZcams won't let me send you the link to the Eleven larp Axe
