    TORO TIMEMASTER QUICK FIX - THIS PART ONLY LASTED 25 HOURS. My Toro Timemaster is only about a year old with about 25 hours on it. I looked down while mowing and noticed that the drag flap was broken and was dragging perpendicular to my mowing path. Time to replace it. But should this part be breaking with only so few hours on the machine? LIKE and SUBSCRIBE!

    You are absolutely correct. I believe my drag flap began tearing at less than 25 hours. At $1600 plus New York State sales tax, very much cutting corners by Toro.

    Great video! Saved this for future reference. Yep, the Toro design engineer probably did a cost down to a more brittle plastic. Could be an injection molding issue also. For the price of this mower, Toro could invest in a more durable part. Supply chain issues in the plastics industry aren't helping either. Who knows what's being used now, since this part is likely sourced from Asia.

      Garage Gear Not surprising. These are poorly made. My first replacement didn’t even get installed. I called and they replaced it at no charge. The thing that made me mad was that I spent so much money on this machine, you expect it to have high quality parts on it and not second rate crap. I installed the new one and will see how it performs. I’m not expecting that it will. They packed it in a box that was too small for the shield so it was folded up in the box and created a kink in it that I had to use a hair dryer to straighten it. Come on Toro.

    Mine looked like yours after less than 10 hours of use. Toro did send a replacement at no cost to me after I submitted request (w/Pics and unit serial number).
    Interestingly, my failed from the left side exactly like yours. I haven't opened the box with the replacement yet....I've since torn off the remaining portion of the original flap.
    Mower seems to work fine w/o the flap....no noticeable difference is cut quality or striping on my fall grass. Overall, I LOVE the mower. I had used a Honda HRX for 6 years and never was super thrilled w/performance. This Toro annihilates the Honda cutting-wise w/mulching. Little things like this though NEVER happened on the Honda....make me curious where else a few pennies were saved.
    Curious what the Exmak commercial version of this mower uses?

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před 3 lety

      Interesting how many people are experiencing the same issues here. My father has the same Honda and I feel the same way about it too. Nice but nothing over the top. I too am interested to see what exmark has underneath...🤔

    • @hellohello8556
      @hellohello8556 Před 3 lety

      I don't have the exmark but I have a timemaster and a turfmaster and the flap on both of them is similar. Everything on the turfmaster is like twice as thick almost overbuilt but I think the reason they must use this weak material is because if it was strong material and somehow failed went under the deck while the blades were engaged it would most probably cause catastrophic damage to the deck and bend up where the spindles mount to the deck causing a write off of the whole deck. Peaceout! ✌️

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před 3 lety +1

      Great questions! I use the wash out port twice a year. Once after spring and once at the end of the season. I scrap out the deck after every mow. Lots of grass sticks under these. Summer time I can usually go a couple of mows with out scraping. I did wax the underside but that did very little. I’m interested in ceramic coating the underside to see what happens. I have about 60 hours on mine now with no signs of rust. Thanks for being an awesome fan! 👍

    After 6 years and around 130 hours of domestic mowing on a 1/2 acre garden, flat but quite bumpy, the drag flap on mine is starting to show signs of pulling away at the right angle corners just below the securing bolts. My solution will be to make two U clamps in sheet steel, crimp them over and JB Weld them on each side.
    Waxoyl to prevent rust.
    My transmission failed earlier this month. Stripped it down. 2 bit plastic bush / oil paddle had sheared in half. I made a new brass bush, machined out the old paddle and bolted it on the brass bush. Good as new.
    Had to resolder the STOP button leads and tie wrap the cable with more slack.
    Did a thorough deck rust remove and Por-15 paint. Then 3 coats of Hammerite (which chips!). The Por-15 doesn't chip off!
    I can see these mowers were no good for commercial use. For lighter domestic use not so bad.
    The newer 10ftlb engine models have more power and seem to have better transmissions and a few other faults fixed..

    • @MrSpeedysteve1
      @MrSpeedysteve1 Před 2 lety +1

      Looking at the wear on the flap, I reckon it's where it can come into contact with the sharp edge of the transmission retaining bracket.
      If you regularly go over something bumpy the can push the flap up inside the mower, large clump of grass or the rear wheel rides down a border edge - that would do it. Once cut through the flap tears and the blades will eat it.
      I've done my fix on the flap corners.
      I think a bit of tough PVC tube slit length ways and glued on that bracket edge would help / be sacrificed instead, as would giving it a smooth radius.
      I just like repairing things🙂
      To be fair, it's only this year things started failing.
      My hours usage is about 41 minutes average a week over those 6 years.
      I tear round the plot, it's 2 miles fast walking.
      So far I've convered about 800 miles in total behind the Toro Timemaster.

    After concerning myself over this video I'll have to pass this along that the newer Timemaster 30s do not have that issue. I have watched my drag over the past 3 weeks since purchasing my Timemaster with the 223cc engine and it hasn't caught underneath going backwards. I'm sorry you had so much trouble but apparently Toro did some changes possibly to fix that issue.

      @@GarageGear I don't know if you still have that Timemaster since this video has been out awhile, you should try it if you still have it. Toro likely saw the mistake and drilled the holes a few inches back to keep the blade from hitting the grass flap when you pulled the mower back. You'd think you'd be able the hear the blade hitting the grass flap, however I have pulled mine back in every situation like dips or rough areas going backwards and the blade never makes contact with the drag. There's plenty of room to move the holes back, just measure the edges of the flap to the rear edge until there's clearance from the flap making contact with the blades. Nobody will noticed you drilled new holes or will be able to see the flap because it's hidden under the rear near the transmission and wheels. I don't think you'll interfere with that if you just don't drill to far back.
