It's a hot muggy afternoon in an east Texas marsh, and it's time to hunt for alligators. We tag along with some lucky hunters that get a chance of a lifetime to hunt alligators at the J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area. For more information check out

I grew up 5 minutes from the J.D. Murphree wildlife management area. I fished and hunted in these exact waters at times every day for most of the year when I live in Port Acres, Texas!!! I miss the area, the fishing and hunting but I do NOT miss the mosquitos!!!!

I was once on my friends uncles property and most of it was a lake. The mosquitoes were so bad, I prolly had a hundred on me.

those are little gators, private property has much bigger critters than those and the state issues you tags if you have enough gators to support harvest . we caught one on our lake that was 12-2 and several over 11 feet. females dont get much bigger than 8 feet. they dont live long enough on refuges to get big.
How do you anchor a Gator line in the marsh when there are no trees to tie too?
I know I use Earth anchors for Beaver Snares and it holds Beaver good. But I would think a Gator has a lot more pull than a Beaver.
Best place to hunt alligators in Texas is 30 miles east of Houston. In Anahuac.

It never ceases to amaze me how this is legal, but it's illegal to move a snake (Or any amphibian or reptile) off a rural country road, photograph it, and then let it go on its way. I'm not saying I want to outlaw gator hunting, but rather get road cruising legalized again. It never should of been outlawed in the first place.

roughly 2,000 to 3 thousand dollars
you can't hunt em if your a non resident
It's good to see these guys care about conservation as much as the hunt, but I am curious, what happens to the caught alligators?

With so many million Aligators why are the rules so strict with tags ,just keep hunting .
well, most of the endangered animals here on earth were once plentiful as well such as atlantic cod, giant pandas, gopher tortoises, goliath grouper, etc, but after human interferance, they became more and more scarce and now some are at risk of extinction or are endangered.

Because they will overpopulate and starve to death after eating all the native animals like birds snakes and small rodents. Not to mention I can't count the number of times we had to pull gators out of my neighbors swimming pools after they overpopulated. I lived 5 mins from the J.D. Murphree wildlife management area and I can tell you that the gators need to be culled.
